Photography has become an integral part of our daily lives, primarily thanks to the widespread use of smartphones. Today, most photographs are in color, while black and white remains an artistic or aesthetic choice. However, the adoption of color photography was a gradual process, requiring considerable effort to develop the appropriate techniques. Among all photographic processes, those in color were likely the most challenging to perfect, demanding significant investment in time and effort, as well as a long period of scientific and technological maturation. At a time when the understanding of light phenomena was still partial and photographic science was in its infancy, the introduction of color photographic processes relied on a pragmatic approach combining scientific methods and empirical solutions. It was only in the 20th century that photographers, both amateur and professional, were finally able to capture color images with ease and at a reasonable cost, though they had to familiarize themselves with these new tools. This presentation will focus on the introduction and reception of the early color photographic processes that laid the groundwork for contemporary techniques.
