I can't tell you how many of your videos I have watched for my Saturn and former Dodge Grand Caravan that have helped me perform repairs, saving me tons. Thank you so much for your help. What is even better than the cost savings is the feeling of being empowered by being able to do the repairs myself. In this world of always having to pay someone for something, it is great to be able to take charge the old fashioned way.

I wanted to thank you very much for your super easy-to-follow directions for cleaning the EGR on my wife's 2000 Saturn S-Series. I especially liked the little trick with using the torx bit to ream out the rest of the dirt and deposits. Nifty. Thanks again. Saturn made it easy to fix this EGR.
I also used your video to replace the crankshaft position sensor on this same car. Didn't take off the starter because it was such a pain to put in the top bolt the last time I put a new starter in this car (145+K). Did it blind, although I had a mechanic's mirror to help. Couldn't have done it without your excellent video. It was still a bit of a pain, but passed the e-check for that code.

Swapped an 01 long block into my 97 Saturn sc2 after flooding the entire car. One of the only electrical parts that went wrong was my EGR. I went to my local Pick N Pull and found one that seemed clean. Took it off, and put it on, didn't think about it. Ran the scanner when the code came on and got P404 on the replaced EGR. Took it apart, cleaned it as shown in the video and no more EGR problems. Car runs smooth now. Thanks.

I did this same procedure to my car. It improved my mileage at first, but over the span of a year, the idle started to get worse. Had to pay a mechanic 65 to tell me the egr valve was loose. Make sure you tighten your bolts!

EXCELLENT! Be sure to wear eye protection while spraying. The spray can easily spray back into your eyes and it can Really sting!
I've also seen Scotty Kilmer use an old broken flex speedometer cable attached to a drill to clean out the carbon in the manifold passages the EGR valve attaches to!
    Take care

Thanks for your very instructive videos! I tried this procedure, and learned the hard way that it is important to reset the PCM by either disconnecting the battery, or removing the PCM B fuse. It turns out that the PCM needs some time to learn the new closed valve voltage; if the PCM is never reset after cleaning the EGR valve, the car will run rough until the PCM has learned the correct closed valve voltage, which can take several days.

@MrCanucklhead Sometimes cleaning the valve does not work you have to replace it.Also the exhaust passage in the cylinder head that goes to the valve needs to be cleaned out which is no easy task.

Another excellent Richpin video. I've got a 99 Saturn SL2, and for a few months, under anything other than light acceleration, when I let off the car would hesitate, and if the RPMs got too low, stall. I could "fix" it by going to neutral and revving it a couple times. Finally it threw a P0404 error, so I cleaned the EGR valve this morning. The pintle would stick in the open position, and after cleaning, operates smoothly. Now it's working great, thanks again!

I don't usually work on cars, but I watched this video and went rite after cleaning my EGR valve. Your the man!! Hopefully I can pass inspection now lol. One thing I noticed that did happened was when you run the engine without the valve on for a couple of seconds to blow any remaining carbon out is that your RPM's want to go into the red line rite away without the valve on, had to turn the car off quickly in fear of any damage. Didn't necessarily run it and rev it as much as you did.

That was the best video on this trouble code I ever saw, My only added comment is soaking will not dissolve any carbon build up, but spraying and scraping works great. I like his spinning the valve seat with a tork driver.

@MrCanucklhead I had a P0401 code on my EGR. You need to check the plunger to make sure it doesn't get stuck. You can do this by inserting something into the plunger then take it out quickly so that the plunger comes back with a snap, then see if reinserting your tool will also move the plunger without any force. If it's stuck then you haven't cleaned it well enough.

Before my last EPA testing the p0404 error came up. I replaced the EGR valve with a brand new one. All good, now i can get my registration renewed. Just before my next EPA test then, the check engine light comes on with the same error, now with a relatively new and still shiny EGR valve! What can I do without taking it to some shop doing diagnosis and costing me half of what the damn car is worth? Last time i tried to do the job myself, the 10mm bolts were frozen and stripped out. Carbon buildup is causing me this grief with the government? I hate the freaking EPA!

Thanks for the great video. I watched it a few time and then got the courage to clean our Saturn SW2's EGR valve. It was working fine, but with a bit of throttle body cleaner and tooth brushing, I removed quite of bit of carbon buildup. I lubed the pindel with some WD-40 as well. I hope this preventative maintenance keeps her running smooth for a good long time.

Excellent vid! Could you have blown some TBI cleaner into the holes where the throttle body was removed, scrubbed around and started the engine to blow any out? I'm guessing only the valve was a problem.
PS, the water pump that I replaced on that 99 SW2, it didn't leak till after 3 months of being on, I used the Red High Temp RTV silicone.

Thanks for the great video! I have two questions. 1) There's some goop that looks like hair gel on the electrical connection component of the EGR valve, I'm guessing that's not supposed to be there? 2) I've been getting a P1404 code (stuck open) and even after cleaning the EGR Valve the pindle doesn't completely close. Do I need to just keep at it or should I go ahead and replace the EGR Valve altogether? I'm still getting the code and experiencing poor idle/acceleration performance...Thanks!

    Hi Richpin,
love your vids - I had this code on my sis' GrandPrix -actually p0404 p1404.
Replaced the EGR(with new) and was still getting slight hesitation-though not as bad as before the EGR replacement. I read where if you dont clear the codes it can still give you these type of problems after installing new EGR (I didnt clear the codes - my buddy has the OBD still lol)
Thanks - and sorry if im asking a question you already answered... didnt see/hear it in the vid :)

@richpin06a THANK YOU!! I decided to give this another shot today in the daylight, followed your exact steps to the letter and I finally got the valve to easily close all the way (found using a thin allen wrench to clean worked wonders). Just got back from a 10-15 minute test drive and idling and acceleration we're fine. One question...the service light is still on. Will that go away with time or should I have AZ or another auto parts store clear it for me? I'm driving a 97 SL2. Thanks!!!!!!!!

    Hello Richpin,
    A quick question for you...
As I tighten down the bolts to my EGR Valve, one of the bolts doesn't tighten up. It spins freely and I can pull the bolt straight out with my hand. So I stripped/damaged the threads.
What is your recommendation on repairing threads?
I did a "google search" and come up with the following two products listed below:
    - Time Sert Thread Repair Kit
    - Heli-coil Thread Repair Kit
Your $.02 cents worth is greatly appreciated.

Hi Richpin, excellent as always, thanks! I have some questions for you... My car is a first generation DOHC (1993 SW2) which has the older style vacuum-operated EGR valve. Does it look the same on the bottom when you take it off, and thus have the same basic process to clean it? I have a code 32 (OBD1) which is EGR system fault. I have intermittently had the code 26 also (Quad Driver Output Fault) which may point to the EGR vacuum solenoid failing as well.

I have a 404 that keeps coming back, unusual amount of soot keeps building up in the egr, after cleaning egr, code returns within a month, did a oil catch mod on the pcv hose so oil would quit going into intake, that made the code stay away for several months but came back and egr was covered in soot, I can for the most just wipe off the soot, my guesses are leftover oil residue in the intake, air/fuel ratio off. compression numbers are awesome, no smoke out of tailpipe. maybe air filter causing it to run rich, 98 cavalier 2.4L, after the mod, no oil was present in intake this time.

I have a P0420 cat converter code. I replaced the front O2 sensor, but not the back one. I thought I would check the EGR in case it has some carbon buildup making it run less than optimal. If I shake it I can hear the pindle, so it's good. Any chance that it could pass the OBDC test, but still be bad? I can't imagine that would be a problem. I guess I'll clean it up anyways and put it back on. Thanks for the vid.

I did this to my 98 SL1 step by step exactly the same way and after two days the CEL is back, It was so clean that the throttle body cleaner coming out of it was still clear. I used a new gasket and even started the car like you said to blow everything out of the manifold. Could the valve be weak? Not completely bad just weak? The car runs exactly the same with the CEL on and as it does with it off. I noticed minor low end power increases right after i cleaned the EGR. No stalling or anything.

@6:58 Please be very careful with this procedure! I've read somewhere that you need to run w/no EGR for 20 sec. I did for ~10sec, bcs of very loud sound and rpm went to 4000, so I shut it off. I put everything together and when started the car (2001 Saturn SL2) the Battery Light came on. After some diagnostics I found that the alternator (new, I installed it ~2 years ago and we don't drive that car a lot) is not charging the battery anymore. I think I've blown In-Line fuse, which goes between the Starter and Alternator. Not big deal of course, but what fuse was there? If someone can advise w/fuse, I would appreciate. The Alternator is for 90A, but Test Results in the documents for that alternator show wider range of currents. Also I've read that usually you put the specified current + 10%, so not sure if to put there fuse for 80A (i didn't see 90A) or 100A (which might be too high to protect). The film is useful. since I see my mistake and also that question soaking, not soaking is resolved. In Haynes it says don't apply any solvents or you destroy the diaphragm inside, but many people do (here and Scotty Kilmer). I see now: you can soak, but in a shallow level of solvent, so it won't reach the diaphragm. Thank you.
The code I had was P0401. After the battery Light came, there were several codes, I erased them twice, and now only one shows P0621 Gen Lamp L Control Circuit. In the scanner I have they show the possible ways to remove the code. For P0621:
    1) replaced Ignition Coil(s)
    2) Replaced Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor.
I think this statistics is not quite right, since the alternator is not charging the battery. Probably that code can appear without Battery Light On. Yesterday I saw one film: also P0621 and Battery Light, and the reason was a faulty alternator. They replaced it.

@richpin06a Will need to do this on my sisters 99 Sw2 with 137k. Code PO404 came in, the car is hard to start. Hope fully this will do the trick. The CEL is intermittent.

@richpin06a thanks rich! i was wondering on those vacuum controled egr valves on those escort engines is it just 2 bolts and a gasket besides from the vacuum hose that you need to remove on order to replace the egr on escorts similar to that engine?? thanks rich

No need to worry your car has a rev limiter and will not exceed 4200 in park.

Mine didn't throw a code but my car would intermittently stall when in neutral or pushing in the clutch pedal (and no check engine light! Weird...) After I used this video to clean all the carbon out it idles and runs like a champ.

When cleaning out the rest of the carbon by starting the car, isn't that bad for the engine to rev that high while cold?
