How Badly Did Hot Rod Power Tour 2023 Damage My Car?

  • I have heard a lot of excuses as to why people don’t want to take their old car on Hot Rod power Tour, but chief among them is they don’t want to put the west and tear on their car. Well I took a 1967 GTO that I abandoned for 16 years on this year’s, 2023, HRPT with just the bare minimum to get it running and reliable (oil change, weather pump, trans rebuild, brake and fuel lines) and took it 2500 miles. So how much wear and tear did it see? Watch to find out.

    Yep, get out and drive 'em! I'd go with a 19.5" 6-blade mechanical fan with optimized pulley diameter before trying an electric fan. E-fans don't ever seem to actually cool better in my experience. As far as the vacuum modulator leak goes, you can probably fix it with a different o-ring rather than having to buy a whole new modulator. And to be fair to the GTO, with the exception of the flat tire and crushed exhaust pipe, everything else was a pre-existing condition rather than something which was caused by the Power Tour drive. Also, Sophie cracks me up. Seems like a good kid.

      I know every dad says this but my kid is the best!
      Yeah there was a lot that was pre-existing. I mean a car doesn’t sit for that long without incurring some rot.
      Modulators are cheap, and I was using ones from the local autozone. I bought a new B&M one that is made in the USA Today for $30, gonna throw it in and see if that helps. Also will reseal the trans dipstick.

      My 67 GTO came from the factory with a 7 blade stainless flex fan and my 67 was a A/C car. No clutch and never ran hot with the matching factory fan shroud. The key for Pontiacs is to take the center guts out of the thermostat and just use the outer thermostat case as a coolant restrictor. More flow all the time that way, plus Pontiacs LOVE that.

    Enjoying your content. Some may be concerned about wear and tear. But it in part make your car reliable. By driving it. You will find issues and repair then. Stretching the cars legs. Best thing for it. A bit of maintenance,some tools and spare parts as you said. And hit the road. My wife and I went on vacation last week in our 70 Skylark. 1100 miles. It was one of the best holidays in awhile. Watching both you guys and others inspired me to get out. Do some maintenance that needed done. Got some spare parts. Few tools and off we went. It is a car we use some. But this trip made the car better. We both enjoy your channels and what you do. Thanks. Al and Leslie.

      Thanks for watching. I agree with you 100%, use allows for all the problems to be discovered and addressed. Congrats on your road trip with the skylark. It’s a lot of fun being on the road. Glad I could inspire you in some part.

    Best part about going bad in old iron that it can be rebuilt like a Harley Davidson and still be Kool and hold value

    Not bad at all Kerry, it was worth all the fun y`all had. Plus you got to see hundreds of very cool vehicles on the tour also. You have a great camera girl there.

    My fan clutch is original to my car, and it works perfectly fine. 160 all day long. Loose as yours. No over heat. 400SBC. never had luck with electric fans.

      I had a 400ci Chevy with the Siamese center cylinders. Good engine. We put it in my friends 78 Firebird. Chevy’s don’t have the run hot and overheating problems that Pontiac’s do, their internal coolant passages are better designed. They are just easier to keep cool.
      It doesn’t come through on video but there is a definite freewheeling spot in the fan clutch that indicates it is going bad. The original one on my car was working when I replaced it, it was just ugly. The Re manufactured ones just aren’t the same quality.

    🤜💥🖐️🤘 maybe you should just add a pusher fan to help out the mechanical fan clutch

      I had one on there before I did the water pump and it helped but I think it’s too small. I am thinking about getting a bigger one.

    You missed the Trans coolent lines, they leak all the time on Turbo 400s. Also that speedo cable is a for sure leak. Tested perfect for 1,000s+++ of miles is good, as is COLD A/C in heavy traffic.! and the water temp locked in at 170 degrees sitting still for hours. If I don't have all them things, I am NOT goin !. just that simple.

    • @MechanicalAdvantageGarage
      @MechanicalAdvantageGarage  Рік тому

      I checked the speedo cable drive and trans lines and they were not leaking at this time. Doesn’t mean they won’t in the future, but for right now they are ok. The speedo cable, the original one from 1967 burned up on the exhaust pipe because the hold down failed and it swung out and touched the hot pipe.

    u got lucky on that trip

    • @MechanicalAdvantageGarage
      @MechanicalAdvantageGarage  Рік тому +1

      Yea I got lucky. But the car is not “wore out” from use. Most of the problems are from neglect. The engine, transmission, rear end, frame, bushings, suspension, and mechanical systems were rebuilt in the 90’s and have 30k miles on them. The trans was then rebuilt again this year and had about 1500 miles on it. Yeah sitting causes seals to dry up and rubber to go bad, but the internals are pretty solid. Yeah it needs a lot of work, but even nice cars need work, these are old cars, they are needy.
