Good match. Much closer than I expected, and every credit is due to Newcastle for achieving what they have. If this trend continues, hopefully we'll see a non Oxbridge team in the finals sometime soon.
While Merton was again on fire, the ferocity with which New Castle fought back was great. I’ve felt some teams threw in the towel before it was decided. Not in this match. Thanks for the upload, Psi!
Pity one team had to lose, but there's no shame in going out in the semis and considering they're the first Newcastle team to get this far, it's an achievement.
Now that we know the finalists, in the words of Michael Buffer - "Let's get rrrrready to rumblllllllee!" :D For what it is worth, I'm staying with St John's as the winner of all this. As a team, they're just superb.
I felt as though Wiberg was slightly off his usual form in this one, with several early wrong answers. I'd have to pick Merton if he's 100%. But I also adore St Johns, so I don't want anyone to lose. The final should be amazing.
lcflngn U say Wiberg was off form yet he single-handedly equalled Newcastle's 6 starters Lol Kinda like that both he and Reynard stuck their necks out a bit and tried educated guesses.
Juliana Leal can't say I'm surprised to see them go, they were up against Merton after all. They did play very well this match though, so they went out on a high note.
I'm Jack Better to be Peplow, Woodland and Wiberg than just Wiberg or Woodland or whoever. Of course, three people are good. But four people are better
* Wiberg's smile and adorable dimple at 04:19 & 07:50 sigh! * Reynard's 'Big Bone Bash' :) * What's the difference between 'church going' and 'church visiting'? 09:40 * Isn't' Britten' the default answer for every question on a British composer? :) Nielsen great on art and classical music. * Nielsen's brain freezes at 18:50 and 20:40 while funny at first, explained on Twitter as Paxman fcucked up last music question, Nielsen disoriented, wouldn't have affected the outcome though. * REM's lyrics (1987) and previously Billy Joel's (1989) great questions though a bit more current like Eminem's 'We Made You' (2009) about Lohan, Kardashian, Simpson etc. is within the lifetime of the contestants and would have been a nice change of pace from the ancient questions :) * Wow seriously bad vibes between Wiberg and Woodland! During credits Newcastle looked happier at their loss than Merton with their win?!?! * Seemed much tougher overall than the first semi. * Of the 17 answered Qs (5 weren't), Merton got 11 with Wonderful Wiberg on 6, Peplow 3 & Woodland 2, bonus conversion rate 70%, Newcastle got 6, with Nielsen on 3, Noble 2 & Reynaud 1, bcr at 78%! Pretty high for a semi. *G'day!
Vncnt D True. Another one he pulled out of thin air under pressure was 'UK 1870s' at 27:40. Would have been nice to see his reaction to that as well considering they didn't know the first 2 colonial battles and he slipped that in at the last minute. Fcuking genius!
Well, the two teams we all expected (and most of us wanted) in the final have made it there. The finale is going to be EPIC. I give the edge to St. Johns but would be thrilled if Merton can pull off a win. In order to do so, Merton are going to have to be at their quickest and sharpest. Great showing from Wiberg today, looking his best all season (in more than one way).
Not so much in this round but he has had his moments. What has made Merton formidable is that Peplow and Wiberg have been trading MVPs throughout the series, and they are always - always - ably backed up by their superb team captain.
Vncnt D Like I said in their last QF match, you've got to hand it to Merton. They know their VPs. And just as St Peter's from the age of Loveday apparently had Superman on their team, Merton this year have Brainiac on their team.
what is much more difficult than answering even the most perplexing questions is trying to find the latest episode of University Challenge. Does anyone have a fool proof method of finding the most recent contest?
Mr Paxman actually saying 'I apologise' for fining a contestant for interrupting with a wrong answer (20:45). Just shows, he's 'gentlemanly' towards the female of the species, which is unforgivably sexist.
I was a about the wave the "MARRY ME NIELSEN" banner, but what if she freezes like that at the altar? Good match, shame on not knowing the lyrics to that REM masterpiece and for some false starts by Newcastle... Impressed with how quickly Wiberg could recognise the symbols of those US universities :O
Uncle Roger She isn't going by this exchange in their match against Fitzwilliam: Paxman: You're going to be a doctor aren't you? Neilsen (drowned out by the applause): Allegedly. And doctors don't do operations like ectomy's or tomy's.
George Washbourn And for that, the entire BBC will find you while going for a pint with them, drag you out and beat the crap out of you. Why? Because YOU DARED TO DESECRATE OXBRIDGE! *all while in your face and my finger almost up your nostril.* On a side note, take this comment with a grain of salt. It's satire

IridescentEye Of course they do. It's the law! *right up to your face with my finger right up your chin* And soon, University Challenge will be restricted to Oxbridge and London only!
I love when Merton can't come up with Lenny Bruce and Wiberg throws out Leo Bloom and Woodland's like "Yeah, I've heard that name before." Yeah, cause he's the protagonist of Ulysses. She can name multiple poets from Shropshire and has an encyclopedic knowledge of minor figures from Greek mythology but doesn't recognize the main character from what might be the most famous novel written in English? How!?
The big bone bash hahaha
Congratulations to Merton and the best wishes for the finals! Cheers to Newcastle for being a fantastic team throughout the series.
Good match. Much closer than I expected, and every credit is due to Newcastle for achieving what they have. If this trend continues, hopefully we'll see a non Oxbridge team in the finals sometime soon.
Joseph Karl
Congratulations for Newcastle making history as well: Until now, they've never reached the semis. Furthest they've got was the QFs.
I love it when Paxman "corrects" the pronunciation of an answer, but his pronunciation is also wrong. #arvopärt
In many cases, his pronunciation is criticised when it is in fact the correct English pronunciation of a foreign word.
While Merton was again on fire, the ferocity with which New Castle fought back was great. I’ve felt some teams threw in the towel before it was decided. Not in this match. Thanks for the upload, Psi!
Thanks for the super fast upload Psi!
Well done on the music, Nielsen!
Pity one team had to lose, but there's no shame in going out in the semis and considering they're the first Newcastle team to get this far, it's an achievement.

Ive always been Merton since the first but now I dont want any team to lose for the finals. They both are beasts!

Bummer... Newcastle was my favorite team this season. Nevertheless, looking forward to the final!
Juliana Leal can't say I'm surprised to see them go, they were up against Merton after all. They did play very well this match though, so they went out on a high note.
They were my favorites as well. Was really impressed with all four of them.
I bet Wiberg knew the answer to the last question as well, too bad the time ran out before the answer.
Two good 3 person teams with their mascots Lowery and Thomas :D Newcaste put up a good fight. Looking forward to the final!
Stella
Three person teams are better than one man teams
St. Johns has a completely balanced teams. All four of them are good.
But Merton is good as well even if theyre 3 person team
I'm Jack
Better to be Peplow, Woodland and Wiberg than just Wiberg or Woodland or whoever.
Of course, three people are good. But four people are better
Adam Walker It's gonna be a tough finals
I'm Jack
Isn't the final already tough? Because you've got (who are meant to be) the best two teams standing
Thanks again for uploading!

Sandroid
You know why Newcastle looked more pleased with their loss? They're the first team of their institution to reach the semis.
Adam Walker
Yep I already knew that Lol. I doubt that's what they were thinking about given how good and competitive they are ...
The one at 4.19 is the best. Wiberg rarely looks this chuffed.
kiloscott
Tks! Still under Wiberg's spell so missed the bit 'title of a poem' :P
Vncnt D

Editing continuity missed a few times. Note how Paxman's jacket quickly switches from unbuttoned to buttoned to unbuttoned...
Well, the two teams we all expected (and most of us wanted) in the final have made it there. The finale is going to be EPIC. I give the edge to St. Johns but would be thrilled if Merton can pull off a win. In order to do so, Merton are going to have to be at their quickest and sharpest.

I almost thought this week Merton wouldn't break 200. But they did!
I think it'll be a good final but it will lack the fury of Monkman and the fastidiousness and sneer of Goldman.
But we shall see...
The what of Goldman?
Last unanswered question 'kawa' means 'river' in Japanese, not that Wiberg needed any help, but thanks anyway, question setters :P
nielsen freezes when she buzzes early.
still looks super hot
The guy reading ancient and modern history didn't know one historical question lmao
Alex Rash i’m yet to see him give much of a memorable contribution... definitely the odd-one-out of the team
Woodland / Wiberg
V
Mc keown/ Devine Stoneman
Thanks Psi 😉
Clarke v Peplow
At last, McKeown and Woodland face each other in the finals. This time just one will be the superior survivor, of Paxman.
dude where's levin?
More like Peplow+Wiberg+Woodland v. McKeown+Spintronics. (unless Levin gets another shower of VERY SPECIFIC U.S. questions then 3 v.3) :)
Don't forget Peplow he is really good!
I wish there's gonna be a tie in the finals to spice up this years series even more! Merton is just as exceptionally good as St. Johns
Has Thomas actually contributed anything so far?
Not so much in this round but he has had his moments. What has made Merton formidable is that Peplow and Wiberg have been trading MVPs throughout the series, and they are always - always - ably backed up by their superb team captain.

Like I said in their last QF match, you've got to hand it to Merton. They know their VPs.
And just as St Peter's from the age of Loveday apparently had Superman on their team, Merton this year have Brainiac on their team.
He got their first question, but apart from that... he did look the part in their QF against Edinburgh.
I think Thomas is officially the team mascot.
An average score of 255 before this round... thats just ridiculous. The other team couldnt match that total score even having played one game more.
...What?
*cough St. Johns
ITubaUTuba
Where'd they get 255 from?
what do you mean "where they get 255 from"? He says it right at the start that they have an accumulated score of 1020 from their first four matches.
GroovingPict
Yes but this mentions an average score of 255.
Apparently Paxo slipped up and gave out one of the answers during the music round
Actual quote:
"And finally, Aaron Copland.
.....SHIT"
I dont get it.
"And finally this composer."
i dont get it
I'm Jack There's nothing to get - it's what actually happened at the recording.
I'm Jack They edited it out of the televised version
Pangolin How did u guys know that happened tho? Still confused
"BrittEn" as an answer to a music round - take a shot
died of alcohol poisoning...
with an e not an o m8
Even I guessed that one ;)
i guess that every english composer answer and nailed this one, well chuffed with my performance.
Britten
what is much more difficult than answering even the most perplexing questions is trying to find the latest episode of University Challenge. Does anyone have a fool proof method of finding the most recent contest?
Dave Garda's channel is up to date i think (as of 2021)
@@yaorito1 Thanks I will try that.
The physics bonuses towards the end there were too damn easy for the first round of a school quiz let alone for a university quiz semis. Lazy setters!
Mr Paxman actually saying 'I apologise' for fining a contestant for interrupting with a wrong answer (20:45).
Just shows, he's 'gentlemanly' towards the female of the species, which is unforgivably sexist.

what about if she freezes on the operating theatre?
Maybe she is not trying to become a surgeon
Uncle Roger
She isn't going by this exchange in their match against Fitzwilliam:
Paxman: You're going to be a doctor aren't you?
Neilsen (drowned out by the applause): Allegedly.
And doctors don't do operations like ectomy's or tomy's.
Priest: - "Do you, Nielsen, Take Alejandro to be your lawfully wedded husband?" Nielsen: - "[...]" Me, sweating: - "...Uhm, honey?" XD
Alejandro Quesada
Let's try another one shall we? Do you, Alejandro, take Leonie Woodland, as your lawfully wedded wife?
Merton are relentlessly joyless. Would much rather get a pint with Newcastle team.
George Washbourn
And for that, the entire BBC will find you while going for a pint with them, drag you out and beat the crap out of you.
Why? Because YOU DARED TO DESECRATE OXBRIDGE! *all while in your face and my finger almost up your nostril.*

@@adamwalker9796 It's not satire if it's explained.
Yeah! Wiberg has got a killer smile ;-) Would you marry me?
so, everyone - who's gonna win next week and by what margin?
i'm going st john's ftw 205 - 190
St Johns 222 - 185
T0y Lit
St Johns can't win by 222-185. And no, I'm not saying that because I'm supporting Merton. I'm actually supporting both again.
No. St. John's can't win by 222 because the scoring system goes up in fives. So they may win by 225.
I'm going 185-160 in favour of St John's. I think the pressure will be on, and the questions difficult, so it won't be too high scoring.
W H This is my other bet :-)
PLEASE STOP PUTTING WINNER IN THUMNNAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Okay this comment is completely unrelated to the episode but
Stone has a husband?
I'm Jack
Perhaps. Given Edinburgh's average age.
Now this is interesting. Looks really young, isn't it?
Based on the comment by the end, i think Paxman favours St. Johns over Merton
I'm Jack
Of course he does. He is a Cambridge man after all.
Why does she keep buzzing and then not answering? They know the rules and it’s incredibly frustrating to watch.
Please, we have one episode left, please do not put the winner in the thumbnail, please confirm you will not do this
Woodland marry me
Carbon 12 ..... A Mole ..... Avogadro ..... come on, give me a break .... GCSE level ....... remember, the posh kids always win.
