What I don't understand is, why God promised Abraham many descendants, and then Rachel is barren for so many years? Why did god needed them to pry and suffer for so long before he bless them with kids.
Excellent question. The best answer is, we do not know the reasons for God. But, I can speculate. Sometimes, in order to bring a person to great achievement, one has to make an effort. The birth of the fathers of the nation - is a great event, and it took Abraham a lot of effort to implement it. The bigger a thing is, the more effort must be put into realizing it.
