Coming from the UK, I'd never even heard of Mason & Hamlin but now I have, I agree it's a beautiful instrument that suits a wide range of music. Thanks Robert for all the effort you put into making these fascinating videos.
Beautifully and effortlessly produced tone. I can imagine this piano filling a concert hall with no problem at all, as it becomes the showpiece above the orchestra. Of course, it takes a great musician as yourself to bring out the best and show off its character. The word you used: Majesty, is certainly one word that could be used to surmise all of the other flattering words that could describe this piano.
Wow, this sounds amazing. Out of curiosity, how was the room mic'd?

From the Sachs biography Artur Rubenstein was given a mason concert grand to play on during his first American tour and he said it was absolutely the most beautiful piano that he ever played on in his life.
Very interesting set of longitudinal modes on the bottom octave. The lowest F, E, D, and C have longitudinal modes around a perfect 26th (compound perfect fifth), and the low B and A have them as minor 27ths. Usually we have, on a Steinway; F1, E1, D♯1, D1, C1: minor 28th B0, Bb0: Major 28th A0: Perfect 29th (Compound perfect octave) or about one and a half steps difference from the standard.
This piano does have a front duplex scale. As for the rear duplex, Mason & Hamlin used a system of individual aliquots for fine tuning of each note. These pieces are loose and only held in place by string tension. Looking at that plate design, it seems possible that the aliquots were either lost or omitted during the piano’s last rebuild.
The stretching of the temperament is off. The bass does not align with the treble. I think this piano probably has a lot of oomph. I wish we could hear it with a clearer tuning.
If this piano was a car, it would be one of those big Duesenberg limousines: big, powerful, elegant, luxurious and an absolute juggernaut :-)
Yes, haha! :-) Beautiful car by the way.

So loving the fact that Robert started playing the pieces much longer than before and that will help lots of people choose right pianos!!
Beautiful tone. Better than Steinway.
Has to be the best Mason and Hamlin I've heard in 40 years!

now I need an evening gown and a glass of wine.
the tone, especially in the middle, is fantastic!
I agree, Hank. The bass, at least with the Robert's selections, was clear and warm. I think the weakest part was those really high notes.
Thanks Bob, I started to shut this off, so glad I listened to this clip. Very special kit!!
Beautiful sound.
OMG, this piano sounds beautiful forever!
Simply marvelous the best sounding piano yet
Love it, would love to play this beautiful "golden age" piano! The best of the best!!

Robert Estrin is a genius piano man.

The piano player ain't bad either.
I can imagine it filling my living room. Totally filling it in every respect!!!! My lottery dream.
That is one lush instrument.
The Ballade in G minor was the piece that got me into Chopin way back when and it's still one of my favorites
Beautiful sound on the nocturne in particular
This is the piano I would get if it was in my budget
Some great playing of that Ballade.
I Was hoping you would take it all the way through the end.

on your next video, can you demonstrate the sound of the piano with something jazzy? I'm anxious to hear
Does this piano sound well foe Baroque music coz I find it more suited for classical and romantic music?
Where are your podcasts? I would love to listen to them
+Fergus Byett The podcasts are coming very soon. We will share the link once it's live. Thanks for the interest.
Do you guys send pianos to other countries?
By Mozart's wig!! 5:22 when he plays that bass...unbelievable :0

Skill pianist
Puts a comparable Steinway to TOTAL SHAME!! This is an outstandingly fantastic piano!
felt amazed when chaikovsky concerto was played shortly though~
Wow, I could buy this model and it would be equivalent to my dream piano, the bosendorfer (any model)
RADIAL TENSIONER rules!
interesting pianist. How the bass sounded organic and non-metallic, not makin you think of mettallurgy was so much better than the Steinway D.
This is the piano Jarrod Radnich uses in his videos!
Why are the castors so tiny?
Why is there no duplex scale on this piano?
Possibly Steinway still had the patent on it around 1902 and M&H couldn't use this advancement in technology yet? Just a pure guess.
