  • In episode 3 of my CDT thru-hike, I rest a bit in Pie Town, New Mexico, then make my way along the Cebolla alternate route past old, abandoned settlements, canyons, and lava fields, to Grants. Fire closures force myself and other hikers to get creative and take an alternate route on both public and private land to Cuba, along which the kindness of strangers helps to get us through.
The musicians featured in this episode were amazing and actually visited us at the Toaster House (a hiker crash pad in Pie Town, NM, thanks to the generosity of a local resident and beautiful person named Nita) for a little jam session that night. They were college bandmates, the bass player moved to Pie Town and the guitarist to Austin, TX. They reunited for a visit and played at one of the local cafes. The guitarist is currently in a great folk trio band called Irondequoit Dodge based in Austin, TX. You can check them out here:

The kindness of strangers…. I’ve read your blog, so I know a little of the kindness you were shown. Really beautiful.

I’m so refreshed to see your videos and the calm, and real emotion shown. I’m getting on the CDT in April to finish out the triple crown. And I hope to have half the emotional wisdom you do, while setting out one last time. Cheer

New Mexico keeps showing up as such a gorgeous landscape, and unique. Challenging in terms of the CDT it appears! 💪🤘keep goin!

Wow, Episode 3 and already as far north as Grants! Nice photography, I'm glad you have a decent camera. I would like to have seen a bit of the lava fields.

Glad you enjoyed it. The lava fields are one of those things that are less interesting in video. Really need to see those in person. Not my favorite part of the trail but I do enjoy them for what they are!

So I noticed in your previous hike you went from Cebolla Alternate to the Narrows, to Acuma Zuni to Bonita Zuni and this year it looks like you went from Cebolla to Highway 117 into Grants. What prompted this decision?

Bonita Zuni wasn’t an option due to fire closure. I was originally going to take the main CDT all the way, but my feet were struggling and water was scarce in the main route through the lava fields. So at the last minute I took the Cebolla alternate again. This time I didn’t walk the road though. I took the high route which entails walking the road for a bit then climbing to the top of the mesa next to the road and walking all the way to La Ventana arch before scrambling down. After that it was all road on the regular CDT to Grants. I would take Bonita Zuni instead of that road walk if possible, but fire closure prevented me from doing so this time. Still, the road walk in could have been worse. The road shoulder was decent.

@@UnfetteredFootsteps wow I didn’t know that they closed Bonita-Zuni. I want to do that route using the Narrows to hike to La Ventana, I am not sure that I can scramble down. I have dizziness which effects my balance.

@@margiegray6766 the scramble down wasn’t too bad. It was patchy loose scree, but if you go slowly it’s doable. Bonita Zuni was just temporarily closed. There wasn’t an actual fire - just ripe conditions due to extreme drought in NM at the time.
