I’m walking the same path. I’m finding out it’s a labor intensive business. If I calculate my profit per hour, I’d probably burn the orchard down. It’s a true labor of love. 😂
I didn't realize there is a need to wash or clean pecans before drying them. I need to read up on that before my trees start producing. Another option you could look at for a cleaning solution is brewer's sanitizer. I'm a home brewer of beer and I use a product called Star San which mostly contains phosphoric acid that lowers the pH of solution so low (acidic) that wild yeast and bacteria can't survive. As a brewer, we normally spray our stainless steel with it or soak hoses. The product just mixes with water and sanitizes a surface after 60 seconds. They use phosphoric acid in soda so it's pretty safe stuff. You can get it in any home brew supply store or online. Just another option to consider.
Hi Dennis, hope you’ve been well! From what I know most growers that produce to sell do some form of rinse and or heat treated process. Our area harvests the tress late so the Pecans are pretty dry by the time they come off and many fall to the ground so between dirt picked up during picking up the pecans from the ground and the hulls that don’t always pull away from the shell right away, bacteria and fungus can grow so we just wanted to do our best to clean them up and followed the chlorine wash/rinse method. That’s great you do home brew and the solution sounds very interesting, we will look into that, sounds a lot more appealing than chlorine solution haha, thanks for the great info! 👍🏻
