Hi James. Your videos are great and most useful in preparing to sit CSWIP exams. I was hoping you could clarify something for me, you do cover it in this video, but I'm still unsure... Where there is underfill, do you schedule both underfill and lack of sidewall fusion (at 2x length of underfill)? And where there is lack of root penetration, do you schedule both lack of root penetration and lack of root fusion (at 2x length of lack of root penetration)?
Hi Stephen, For Lack of Side wall fusion you will need to count it on both sides of the plate (if it is on both sides of course) the underfill section connected with it is only counted the once. I always try to teach the following methodology - If it's in the weld metal count it once, if it's on the side wall/ parent material count it as an individual. For the lack of Penetration and lack of root fusion only count these and single areas which are separate from each other. meaning an area of lack of root fusion is not the same as an area of lack of penetration and they cannot overlap each other. The acceptance standard for your examination will give you to different allowances and acceptance levels for the two different defects. I hope that the above makes sense.
@@CarbonArcTC Thanks James, that helps. I understand now that underfill can occur in the weld only (side walls fused), or at the same time as lack of sidewall fusion (on either one or both side walls). If lack of sidewall fusion occurs on both sides, measure total length of both sides. On root side, it is either lack of root penetration or lack of root fusion. Length is measured once.
