I'm with Mike on the Dune argument, he is absolutely right, you release a smash hit game you release minis 2 expansions and before the ink has even dried on the second expansion, you release a replacement game. That's an odd timeline and its annoying if you fully invested in the first model only to have your friends come over and insist on playing the new model because its "better". Its basically a why split the community argument and its totally fair to ask that question.
Interesting discussion on Dune. I think the concern I have is the short timeframe between expansions from the first game and the new addition makes me feel sour about supporting all the products for the first game of the new game starts from a better place. Great content Dice Tower
This is how I felt when they had this same argument in last years list. I hadn’t got into the game(s) yet and was confused why they were selling both versions still. I wouldn’t have bothered with the game until a definitive second edition, but my friend got the original for free shortly after. That game has quickly become a favorite. I’m not going to bother with the other or the expansions until they make that definitive second edition down the road, which they most assuredly will because of what Mike and Zee are saying.

I think Dune Uprising could have been a new board expansion similar to Ticket to Ride, Heat, and plenty of other games that nobody ever bats an eye about. You can play either board with any expansion, and many of the cards don't have to be played exclusively with the set they came with. The decision to include the core components and add additional stuff to make it the same price as the base game was weird. That framed it like a 2.0 coming out less than a year after an expansion came out, and gave the players that had been with the series since the beginning a bunch of redundant components. They could have done 2 SKUs so old players could get just what they need, and let new players on-board here.
Dune immortality came out 2022, had a big box which made it "feel" like it was definitive and done, in the way it would all fit in the box. I’ve played both Dune Imperium and Dune Imperium Uprising. I get its weird on the timing of them coming out in regard to expansions and all that, but in my opinion Uprising is SIGNIFICANTLY better. Just more fun and diverse. I’ll still play the original, they’re similar, but for me it brings the rating up from a 9 to a 9.5, and that’s enough to have bought it instead of the other one. Also, just got the bloodlines expansion which is awesome! It’s the first expansion designed with uprising in mind but also compatible with the original which is great too. There’s a reason why the World Series of Board gaming will now use the uprising version. So my suggestion? Play them out, give them a fair try and you’ll find out for yourself which is better.
The Dune Imperium situation is pretty simple, and Roy covered it years ago: it’s just Movie 1 and Movie 2. As someone who bought the Deluxe of Dune Imperium I'm not only a bit miffed about Uprising holding some characters and the Worms "hostage" but I'm also miffed that I bought what seems to be the Ultimate Final Deluxe and now there is another expansion coming.... I'm happy to continue to play Dune and love the game as is but it still feels a bit crummy. Especially as a big fan of the series, so the missing characters and worms feels especially egregious (and I'm too invested/poor to reinvest in Uprising AND whose to say they won't just make a new v2.75 game when Messiah comes out?)

In my opinion, on a very high level yes... but it's subtle, both rely on betting using limited information but both the nature of information (presence or absence of particular charecters in the pool vs position of gems and curses) and the mechanism of betting (bidding and outbidding with chips vs area majority kinda) are different... I would say that for me they have a similar spirit but Spectral is more thinky.
Vindication's bloat has killed it for us. Like Tom said, the base game is so sharp and fun. Those miniatures are dumb and take up too much space on the base box. The box size was daunting and a hassle but it was worth fighting through to table the base game + pets + medallion action. All the bloat problems were compounded when we got the big white box with the other stuff. The experience of the game doesn't match the size of the box. We haven't played any of the new content (hamlets + chronicles) as a result sadly. Such a shame. I basically fully avoid games with modules as a result. Just tell me the best way to play the game. I'm not interested in modules.
The Disney version for Sheriff of Nottingham is the weirdest thing. Not all families want a game that's not just about bluffing and negotiation, but it's about 'payoffs and bribes'. I'm not saying it's not a game many families won't enjoy... but, it's one of the games I would think will benefit the least from a 'Disney' version
"Dune Imperium Uprising" is not a reprint nor a sequel nor an expansion. It is a variant with essentially only slight changes that is marketed in a way that essentially forces people to buy both games although they are essentially the same game. And it devalues the first game and was a kick into the faces of buyers of the first game. It's really not ok!
@@peterblack_they aren’t saying that at knife point they have to buy the game. They are saying this could have been an expansion but instead if people who want to try this version have to buy a whole new game which sucks. I agree. It sucks. Sadly this happens often with big titles with big IPs.
Most if not everything new in Dune Uprising could have been expansions for Dune Imperium. I like the spies and some of the additions to the board but the worms are way overpowered.
To Mike's point about Dune ... there are a lot of Star Wars games, and if you're not into it you don't really know the difference between Star Wars Imperial Assault, Star Wars Outer Rim, Star Wars Rebellion, Star Wars Armada, Star Wars Legion, Star Wars the Deckbuilding Game, Star Wars the Card Game, etc. But Star Wars gets a pass for having so many variant games, for some reason. In Dune we have the 1978 Bill Eberle game and its 2019 remake which are best at 5-6p, and 2021 streamlined 2-4p edition with movie art; Dune: War for Arrakis , 2-4p (2 best) from Marco Maggi who designed War of the Ring; and Dune Imperium + Uprising (1-6p, 4 best) from Paul Dennen of Clank fame, these were released to match content with the two Dennis Villeneuve movies. Plus there are 3 expansions each for each of these! There are other less popular Dune games too, but these are the main ones. And they're all different, and they're all good!
Uprising has spies which is better, The combat's more impactful, The resources are more scarce, The balance is better, And the tempo is better. But yes if you already have and love Dune Imperium, you do NOT need to switch to Uprising.

@andyharris4048 you are somewhat right, but is it fair? At least they could wait little bit, for the body to be cold, as goes the saying. But they are always in the hurry to make more money. And in this case, you can see it from miles away.
Seems like over the years… Tom always is slightly negative towards the entire Valeria line of games. Not sure why. Of course he can have whatever opinions he wants of course.
Yep, the whole Dune thing was annoying. So annoying I sold off my copy and never want to play another Dune: Imperium game again. The worms should have been in the first game ffs. And I love Dice Throne Adventures. Never understood the hate for it.
I don't mind new versions as long as they give people a way to upgrade an old version, this should be automatic. Whether they give you a discount on a trade in or proof of purchase or whatever on a new version, they should definitely offer an expansion that upgrades an old version. I honestly have no interest in Dune anymore.
My friend and I respectfully disagree with Ticket to Ride. It's incredibly basic and boring. Same reason we don't like Castles of Burgundy. Except Castles is a generic euro point salad. My mother will only play the smaller Ticket to Ride London, and only as 2 players. I got my parents to switch to Azul thankfully. Which is about as basic as I ever want to get with a board game these days. I don't love Azul, but I like it enough to be willing to play it when my parents ask to play it. I've never played War of the Ring. It's a long game I've heard. And the community feels Dune: War for Arrakis is easier to teach and shorter. So it sounds like a stepping stone to transition people to War of the Ring. I love Arkham Horror the LCG. I hope they don't stop making content for it. And I hope they bring back all the return to boxes in the revised format.
Hey Zee, respectful disagreement on your Dune: Imperium Uprising (mis)take. I own, love and play both versions of Brass. My buddies own both versions of Dune and we play both and love it! Game sequels with iterative improvements are a boon to the hobby. Doubly so for excellent games like Dune: Imperium.

You're in luck! The review is dropping soon.
“Mathematical Underpinnings” New band name I call it
As someone who bought the Deluxe of Dune Imperium I'm not only a bit miffed about Uprising holding some characters and the Worms "hostage" but I'm also miffed that I bought what seems to be the Ultimate Final Deluxe and now there is another expansion coming....
1:18:07 cannot agree more with Zee. Bought D:I on 2023. A few months later they release D:IU. Crap.
Fanboys are ludicrous 😂
Tom's Guild of Runes sounds like a unique title and hopefully someone makes that game 😅
Naga Raja - King of the Naga. The Naga are a mythical ancient race(s) of semi-divine people. Most cultures and mythologies have something like this. This happens to be South-East Asian Indian.
Another matching 10 for me, but with the people this time.

I distinctly remember the Abyss backlash....
I assume the grandparent story game was Tichu? That game has straight up gotten people murdered.
I really like blue moon legends. You can find copies for 50 to 100
Does everyone realize a rook is a Eurasian black crow? It’s on the most powerful card in the deck.
I wish I could actually buy Clank Catacombs in Canada.
1:04:13 Year-end highlight: Mike slinking off...
Uprising is different enough to justify its own existence. The fact they are doing it all retro-and-forward compatible is amazing and just not predatory
War for Arrakis replaces War of the Ring for me - it's faster, more asymmetric, better looking, and more variable. Big fan, they knocked it out of the park
Is spectral at all similar to cursed court?
If the changes are slight then how are you forced to buy both? This entire comment is a contradiction.
@@peterblack_they aren’t saying that at knife point they have to buy the game. They are saying this could have been an expansion but instead if people who want to try this version have to buy a whole new game which sucks. I agree. It sucks. Sadly this happens often with big titles with big IPs.
Does the rising 5 app still work?
It is now web-based and still works well as of our last play (4 months ago).
Also Dune Imperium Uprising has a CHRISTOPHER WALKEN CARD!!!!

Zee: You wanna mention something horrible about their marriage perhaps? You wanna air? Go ahead… Go aheaaad…
…Bob’s on the run
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I agree with Mike on some things, but I absolutely do not agree with his stance on the 4,000 versions of Dune Imperium released in the last month
Earth is just too much. There are better tableau builders. I prefer forest shuffle. Faster, easier to teach, and far less setup.
Uprising has spies which is better,
The combat's more impactful,
The resources are more scarce,
The balance is better,
And the tempo is better.
But yes if you already have and love Dune Imperium, you do NOT need to switch to Uprising.
IT WAS A COZY MHMM
So much ticket to ride love. That would be in my top 10 over rated games of all time for sure, or maybe games that fell flat. I have tried to like this game, but just don't find it even a little interesting.
Lord of the rings is a FAR more loved IP than Dune. I don't see war of arakis climbing as much as war of the rings.
DT cull video! 2:50
Baby needs a new pair of shoes.
LOL; Tom is very fiesty in this one!!
Where do the people that stole the pieces store the game in a sock drawer 😂
I would love to enjoy Sleeping Gods, but it lost me when it forces players to play more than one character.

I agree with Tom 100% that "Guild Academies" is just a very bland, forgettable pair of words to lead off a title. Not quite as bad as "Guild of Merchant Explorers", but close
Making the same game is just like when video games make a remake with just upgraded graphics like the last us. People will buy it if it's good.
That Tiwanaku looks far too much like Tiddlywinks for my tastes.
Could you please be careful to not hit the desk so much; now you've got these mics instead of the ones that clip on your clothes it causes a loud banging noise that makes it difficult to listen on headphones.
Agree that guild academy of valeria is a terrible name. They shouldve called all the valeria’s generia instead.
I agree with Mike related to Dune Imperium series. It keeps me away from buying it, after getting to try it and seeing it is ok, because I don't believe I will get the best version. What if another, better version will pop-up just months after I aquire it?
Then you'll own a great game. THE HORROR.
Zee is totally wrong about Dune. Mike is correct.
Acquatica over Abyss. Ticket to Ride over Twilight Imperium. This is where the list stops making sense.
Lol its like people prefer different things :D Can you blame one if he doesnt want to sit 8h to get one game in
I don't mind new versions as long as they give people a way to upgrade an old version, this should be automatic. Whether they give you a discount on a trade in or proof of purchase or whatever on a new version, they should definitely offer an expansion that upgrades an old version. I honestly have no interest in Dune anymore.
I'm with Mike About Dune crap
In a vacuum yes, but it's been too many of them. The most popular games world is very stale currently.
Wouldn't be a dice tower top 100 video if Tom wasn't weirdly and aggressively negative about the things Mike says and picks. Honestly just reads as immature
It IS immature, we are just being silly. Sorry!
While Tom's comments towards Mike can sometimes seem a little harsher than normal banter, I'm not actually there in the room, nor do I know you guys in person, so I shouldn't make those kinds of comments. Thanks for all the great content!
Yeah, it’s all in good fun.
Dune Imperium is to Dune Part 1 vs Dune Imperium Uprising is to Dune Part 2. People arguing to get rid of Dune Imperium is like saying you'll never watch Dune Part 1 now that Dune Part 2 exists. Each are their own spin on that era of the story.
Joey, please! Quite annoying 🙄
