HOW TO | Extend Portable AC Exhaust Hose

- Portable AC's are noisy. I wanted to reduce the noise at night to help me sleep. I decided to run the portable AC from outside my bedroom and from another room and use fans to direct the air into my bedroom. This required extending the exhaust hose. So I extended the exhaust hose by attaching another hose and I made my own coupler because there weren't any on the market at the time I made this video.
***UPDATE 1 - At the time I made the video, couplers were not available, but there are now couplers available to buy, see links below.
***UPDATE 2 - When using hose clamps, tighten with socket wrench to get the tightest fit.
***UPDATE 3 - Cheapest option - you can replace the plastic hose with a 6inch by 25ft insulated hose from Home Depot and use clamps to clamp it to the window adapter on one end and the adapter on the AC at the other end.

Good job of improvising. The 2-hose AC works best with both hoses going outside to pull in outside air instead of warm inside air. Temp control works better too.
Yes, I have read that dual hose portable AC's work better than single hose. I didn't know this at the time that purchased this one otherwise I would have gone with a dual hose. Then again a window AC is better than a portable AC... and of course a ductless mini split works better than a window AC. After installing a ductless mini split at home, its not that bad and I'm looking into installing a 3 zone unit to cover the rest of the home.

Someone else in the comments suggested buying a 6 inch hose by 25 ft insulated at Home Depot and attaching it to the adapters with clamps. I'm gong to try that out as soon as it gets hot enough for me to turn on my portable AC. I like the idea of an insulated hose.

You're welcome! That's the tricky thing with published UA-cam videos, you can't modify the video to add an update so I had to add the update in the video description.
The problem is that they design these units so cheaply that the exhaust fan can't scavenge the heat properly through a longer hose and it will eventually damage the unit. You need to add a second fan to the window end of the extension to help suck the heat out of the duct.
Other people have mentioned the same risks. I supposed there's a length at which it becomes ineffective. I ran it for one season with double the size of the hose (but never fully stretched out) and I didn't have any issues, but I also expected too much out of this unit. I have moved on to a ductless mini split. I bought one for $700 and installed it myself.

Ok but this same type of ducting is what an oven hood uses to lift air without a secondary fan to pull more air out. It's fine, heat rises. Adding 6-8 extra feet will not affect it that much.

The "attachments" (the duct flanges or 'adapters') that attach to the back of the units intake and exhaust vents/holes, could you measure and tell me what the outside diameter of those flanges are please? I need to order the flanges from Danby but would like to know if I'll need 5 or 6 inch ducting to fit over the outside of those duct flanges.
Thanks for responding.I got it from open box they give the impression it's dented or scratched.It said do not ask your agent where scratched because they don't know.It had yellow standing water I told them these were return's and they admited it.If I new this I wouldn't have purchased.I got the mist thing connected after reading the directions many times It still has to be manually drained.My review of product Cheap Plastic part's made in China nothing fit's correctlly you have to force it and use alot of duck tape

Good call! I never got around to wrapping the hose. We still use one portable AC in our house. The cool-aide heat sleeve seems expensive, but if it works for you, that's great.

But I found out there is a limit to home much you can extend the house without damaging the portable AC. I think it is 12 feet. What do you think?
@@crand20033 I don't know the exact distance but I wouldn't pair more than two hoses together. There's a fan next to the condenser coil that pulls the hot air away from the condenser coil and the idea is that if the hose is too long the fan cannot successfully evacuate the hot air from the unit. If the heat remains in the condenser coil chamber and cannot be expelled, then the compressor will need to run for longer periods of time in order to cool down the room to the desired temperature. So the idea is that the compressor will overwork itself and possibly prematurely fail. To be honest, in the day time, my portable AC never reached desired temp so it was continuously running, haha. I also believe the compressor will shut off when it overheats to prevent failure. I suppose if you really want to run longer distance hoses you can attach a metal coupler that comes with a powered fan to help expel the hot air away from the unit.
You could fit an additional fan in the middle of the two hoses

You're welcome! Central AC systems can be very expensive. The window units are a lil cheaper than portable AC and will cool better than a portable ac. I have seen many homes where people make hole in the wall to install a window unit and it works out well. Maybe you can get a handyman to install a window unit for you. But if you really cannot install a window unit, then a portable unit is your next best option.
@@ChavezDIY I have skylights instead of windows. I am going to try Do the hole method. I am going to run two of them, because last summer when I vented out the skylight it didn't work great. I was really hoping for a more permanent solution. I do not want to put it out the skylight again, because there were other problems and ended up redoing it once every other week. You are right the Duc tape only stays on for so long. I will end up getting the insulated Duct and see if it would work with a vent fan at the end because it is a long way to the outside. I extended exhaust pipe up through what use to be the fart fan since it already exhausted outside, but the extra length seem to cause the compressor to cycle off bascially putting unit in fan mode(NO COOLING). The instuctions indicated to keep exhaust pipe as short as possible. Still trying to solve problem!
What do you mean by fart can? Is that a vent going up and venting through the roof? So if you put back the original hose it operates as usual? Someone in the comments of this video mentioned the exhaust fan may not be powerful enough to push the hot air through a long exhaust hose, so the hot air get trapped at the AC making it run inefficiently.
The compressor is shutting down due to excessive refrigerant pressures caused by the exhaust restrictions you've added. This is a bad idea and will destroy the unit.
Still having issues after wall thermostat showed 88 I had it, I finally turned on stale central air. I didn't want to use electric A/C because it's vented into attic,I'm on 3rd floor and the central Air is also vented to hall's not legal. Thats called shared heating and if you get any help with Bill's and they find out you may have to pay it back! but 213 50% off because it was open box next year I'll hire a handy man and put in window unit's.I'm with you I would never buy one to bad we can't see how they run first and all the extra money you put into it and your time they should be free.
I agree, these portable AC's are overpriced for what they do. I recently cleaned the coils on my portable unit and it helped it run a tad bit better and decreased the temps at the exhaust hose. I am still disappointed overall. I'm going to put in a window unit in a few weeks.
exhaust fan In ceiling some people call it a fart fan, I converted a bathroom into office space since the exhaust fan terminates on the roof. I thought I could remove the exhaust fan housing and attach exhaust pipe on portable ac to it. the compressor shuts off due to length of flex pipe. Either diameter of roof Jack pipe is to small or unit doesn't like moving air vertically up to ceiling. if I lay the exhaust pipe on the ground the unit runs fine.
Haha, fart can, now it get it. I see what you did now. No, that won't work for the two reasons combined - exhausting up takes more effort and the vent pipe diameter on roof pipe is smaller, creating a restriction in air. Your best option is exhausting through a window. If you can't do a window, some ppl have videos on exhausting through the wall. If you really want to keep the setup through the ceiling vent, you can try adding a booster fan used in HVAC applications. There are some that move air at about 90 cfm and others that are double that.
Here's a cheap one. 4 inch diameter pipe moves 90cfm and 6 inch diameter pipe moves 240cfm.

Miguel, could you maybe add a video of how you added insulation tape inside your portable AC? I have a gigantic 14,000 BTU Haier and even with a rotary compressor that sucker is loud and buzzy too.
Mark, could you maybe add a video about of how you insulated the flex pipe exhaust with that Reflectix insulation wrap? I think it would help with heat transfer and maybe a little with noise from the rushing air too.
It would be a lot of trouble to make that video since I put can foam sealer on underside of the AC. I removed the casing and turned on the AC to see where there were heavy vibrations. I had plastic rubbing on the plastic case which was making annoying noise. But if your compressor is the source of the noise, not much you can do about that. I really dislike portable AC's and would never recommend anyone to buy one.

Just a comment follow up to MFG notes ot to extend. By extending the hose length you are obstructing the air current which will overheat over time the AC unit and cause it to fail sooner than later. An alternative would be to add a slow exhaust fan to the end of the longer exhaust hose to assist the flow and prevent overheating.
I could see it overheating if the extension was really long. I don't have it fully extended, only wanted a couple of feet more than stock fully extended. I really like your idea about adding an exhaust fan. This happens to mine I have th exhaust pipe about 7 metres long and it gets hot. I saw hoses with extractor fans inside but not sure how to work out the speed of the fan to the speed of the outflow 😮
I EXTENDED IT TO MY DRYER VENT AND FOR SOME REASON IT JUST TURNS ON FOR A LITTLE THEN GOES BACK INTO FAN MODE. WHY? Maybe I need a newer unit mine is 8 years old. 12000 btu cooling a very small room about the size of a one car garage. Is it the size of the room or is it because ALL the piping is 6in EXCEPT the smaller end which leads to the exterior.

Interesting. Does it turn off only with the extended hose venting to the dryer? or does it also turn off when left shorter and venting through a window? Thats just to check if the length of hose makes a difference or the pest door restricts air from coming out. Your compressor could be going bad with its age. Before you toss it, I recommend opening it and dust off all the inside. I also recommend cleaning both the evaporator coil (where the cold air comes from) and the condenser coil (where the hot air exhausts from) with a foaming coil cleaner spray. Use water with pressure to rinse off the foam.
The coils look like car radiators. There's two of them. If the coils are clogged and it won't run efficiently and maybe causing the compressor to overheat and thus the compressor shuts off. Let the unit dry naturally for a day. If you clean the inside including the coils and it continues shutting off, the compressor may be going bad. The compressor is the most expensive part of an AC so you might as well buy a new unit instead of replacing the compressor.
how did you get the vinal hose to stay in mine gets pushed out at least once a week from the pressure
That would happen to me as well. The clamps I used had two ways to tighten, you can use a screwdriver or you can use a small socket. I noticed that using a screwdriver does not give you a tight fit, you are better off using a small socket over the bolt head. Using a socket will definitely get it tight enough so it wont come loose.

I'll never recommend these ever,there 2 hot! they still suck up air from behind unit with is not how it's marketed! But when it cools down I'll definitely try your way just don't wanna pull it apart, I'm not kidding you wouldn't believe how much tape I used I have a dryer kit and a vet kit brand new with one having the fan on it like one of your comments.And I'm going to see what I can use of this. Since there is no ventilation in my apartment,&, with the central air or heat it's vented into attic space which is ilegal! anything bigger than 50ft.including bathroom fan has to be vented outdoors, I bought that roto razor and all that vent stuff cuz I was going to put in a vent like the cooking Fan's in a older house the ones on the side of the wall where you pull a chain.but because the exterior it brick I kinda changed my mind and just tried to get by using infered heat &this crappy air-conditioning unit! I couldn't keep up with the insulation from attic some dust mold&mites coming in vents.if I ever win the lottery and can afford to build by scratch boy will I know what not to do! You should put the second hose on and extend that too you’ll cool the room much faster and more efficiently too!
I have read that the dual hose portable AC's are more efficient. I didn't know that at the time I bought this unit. While this unit does have the option to attach the second hose, I would have had to modify the panel that vents out the window. The connection between the window panel and the hose tapers for a more compact fit and I never figured out a way to attach a secondary hose to the panel.

Other people have said their manufacturer recommends not to extend. A couple of ppl have told me that they tried to vent it up out of a ceiling and the compressor would shut down, so that's a no brainer, don't extend and exhaust it out of a ceiling. I didn't have any issues extending the hose. Initially I extended my ac so that we can sleep at night with cool air and not have the noise of the AC directly in the room, cause it is noisy. It worked out for that purpose. I removed the extension cause its a lot of hose to carry around when moving the unit. Window units outperform portable ACs, so if you can get a window unit use those better.
I have extended the hose for my delonghi unit. Although, according to the manufacturer they do not recommend extending the hose as it ”may damage the unit”. Should i be worried?
Other people have mentioned that their manufacturer does not recommend extending the hose. When I attached the second hose, I didn't fully extend both and I didn't have any issues. I certainly wouldn't extend it more than one additional hose. I would be more worried about the condenser coil inside being dusty.

What are you doing with the drain hose and the water?
Good question. Nothing really. I used to drain it every once in a while and only a few ounces would come out. I stopped draining it and realized it never gets full and the water evaporates on its own.
Mine has two drains I put 1/2 tubing on mine and dump it in the shower, when we have humidity mine will overflow and that just needed to happen once. I used two tees to time them into 1 line which gives a vent on top and water flows freely.

I don't remember. The first year being a homeowner I went to home depot over 30x. I'm lucky to have one 5 mins away from my home so I don't mind going there.
those clamp straps (even the stainless ones) do indeed go far bigger than 5". The only place I know to buy them, though, is at garage sales. lol :)

How did you connect the hose to the wall or does your go out a window? Any suggestions of how to attach to a hole in the wall?
My hot air is exhausted out the window. The hose is attached to a rectangular plate with a hole that goes on the window. Its part of the kit that comes with the portable AC. You are the FUCKING MAN !!! I was having so much trouble getting my hose to connect. Went to Lowe’s, bought the pieces you recommended, followed your instructions, and finally got it installed ! Now not only can I live in a cooler apartment, but I don’t have to hear my girlfriend nag me to install the AC every day 😂 a true win win

Is it only for summer season?
When I had this portable AC, yes I only used it in the summer. I would take it down once temps dropped to the 70s. They do make portable ACs that have heating function as well, but I did not want to pay extra for that since portable heaters are relatively inexpensive.

Hey, did it impact Your AC unit lifetime or is it all good? I just got a brand new one and am tempted to simply attach exhaust to the ventilation canal instead out of the window :)
My brother currently uses this portable AC at my parents' house. It did not affect the lifetime of the unit as far as I can tell. Keep in mind that I only added one additional hose, same distance as first hose, and both were not fully extended. If you're just adding one more hose of the same distance as first, I think that's fine. I would be more concerned about having dirty coils in the AC. You gotta open the AC and clean out the condenser coil once every 1-2yrs. Having a dirty condenser coil will impact the AC unit lifetime.
Not a good idea extending the exhaust hose. Much more heat will be released into the room that your trying to cool. Plus it strains the condenser fan and the compressor will be running at higher pressures shortening its lifespan and reducing its cooling efficiency.
I don't recommend others to extend the hose out the ceiling as it may be difficult to vent the air up and out. When you say heat will be released into the room, do you mean radiated heat from the hose will enter the room? You can replace the hose with a insulated hose to remedy that problem. If the compressor overheats it will shut off to prevent damage. I hear people say that extending the hose can strain the condenser fan and compressor but nobody has proof. I don't see how it can strain a fan since its made to spin and will not spin faster than it is programmed to. I also don't see how the compressor will run at a higher pressure since it is located in the intake side chamber and not the hot exhaust chamber. I had it extended for one season with no issues. I have used this for about four seasons now and its still running like a champ in my brother's room. I think what will stress the compressor more is filthy condenser coils and running it all the time in a room that it can't effectively cool down to the desired temp.
EXACTLY CORRECT! An A/C doesn't cool air -- It removes HEAT and if you restrict the condenser fan's ability to evacuate that heat, then you increase the refrigerant pressures and reduce efficiency. You are creating a restriction when you add hose. Imagine blowing air through a longer straw vs. a short straw. They are designed to run at optimum efficiency with the hose length they come with. Period. You might get by with an extension for a short period if it's 100% straight, but you are taking a big gamble on destroying the unit and certainly you will not be getting the efficiency you otherwise would.

Yes, after I published this video (many year ago), I started finding collars and couplers. I'm glad to see they're available. I still use a portable AC in my son's room but a window AC does a better job of cooling down a room.

Portable ACs are probably the least efficient of ACs. I'm not sure that a dual hose vs single hose system will make a difference. Window mounted ACs are more energy efficient compared to portable ACs.
Pipe insulation is not for exhaust pipes!
I no longer have this set up, I went back to using one hose. I didn't have any issues with the foam insulation that I used. The problem that I ran into was that metal connector piece was heavy and in addition, it also got hotter than the plastic. I hate those hoses, they don't stay in the fittings they give you, they are not insulated and let the heat back into the room, and they seem to be the worst problem with the hoses. You'd think the manufacturer would do solve this most obvious problem!
When I opened the unit I found air leaks from the hot chamber down through the bottom and the front of the unit. So I sealed those areas with insulation tape and foam insulation and the temps at the exhaust hose increased by about 15 degrees. Portable ACs are terrible, a window unit is much better if you can install one. I have friends that cut a hole through their wall to install a window unit, haha.
significances I think the company that sells these gives the same 1/4 in.widow kit that isn't wide enough for the window to close down and hold in place because the Force of the air kicks out the half ass widow kit,& the hose's on fresh air side &the hotter than hell side! It looks like a gypsy lives hear it's duct tape reflective furnace tape masking tape, And I got it 1 because I'm disabled 2 because the landlord hasn't cleaned the duct work from it scorching the inside of furnace with mold being extracted from cool air being sucked from attic and in summer the attic space above my ceiling is so hot even the central takes forever to cool,But these portal advertise that they only take fresh air from outside! Not true the whole back is open & showing those things steel coils just like an outside unit so it's also sucking in dust &cat hair in the back end.For the cost of these units &how hard it is to really cool my apartment I would pay a handy man to carry one up and install it the negitive pressure claim is BS it's actually cooler in the building Hall's Never again it's 77 in here plus I gotta dump the water!Bad marketing bad design, workmanship

That’s a dual hose unit why aren’t you using both hoses it would cool your house way better. Also that paper towel and bungee looks ghetto as hell open that thing up and find what’s raddling and put some kind of foam there.
Its a dual hose capable unit, but the unit is advertised as single hose and the window kit only came with a hole for one hose. I looked into buying a second hose but I'd have to cut a hole in the window unit and didn't want to go through the hassle. I have serious doubts that it will cool way better, portable AC units are the weakest of ACs (portable vs window vs mini split). I read ppl stating that dual hose is better, IMO a window unit cools way better than a dual hose portable AC. Yes, that towel and bungee looks terrible, but the point was to identify the location of the rattler. I then opened the unit and used insulation tape to dampen the noise and it worked. I only used this portable AC for two years and upgraded to a ductless mini split which is WAY better. Mini splits are challenging to install on your own but it is doable with reading the instructions and watching youtube videos.

I feel your pain. The Portable AC coils are also hard to clean. Removing the front and rear cover is an ordeal.

Yeah, if would be more helpful if it was a little longer. I hate portable ACs but its way better than nothing when dealing with temps near 100 and above. Recently here in SoCal we hit about 110 F, that was insane.

There are limitations to doing this such as you can't extended it too far and you can't vent up.
