This was revolutionary in 1998. Psychedelic rock was mostly dead and Kula Shaker revived it. I love it as much or more in 2022 as I did in 1998. Agree with other commenters that this was a criminally underrated band. "Peasants, Pigs and Astronauts" is one of the ten I'm taking to a desert island.
I remember them at the Heniken summer festival in Imola (Italy) in July 1998, they replaced the Verve who had melted a few hours before their performance. I knew the Kula thanks to their great "K", even on that occasion they were great!
I remember watching this live on the Friday night it was broadcast. I miss TOTP. Back then, before UA-cam it was the only way you'd see live performances outside of concerts etc
Best sounds of all 'Sound of Drums' videos on youtube.... I hear Crispian singing in my ears.... His voice is like a remedy. And I ready to hear the 'Sounds of Drums'.
Lyrics: Sound of Drums I hear the sound of drums on a melody, I hear the sound of drums Well, singing the names above in the city, yeah, revolution for fun I feel the time has come like a remedy, I feel the time has come We're shaking the spear of love in the city, yeah, I hear the sound of drums Yeah, yeah Can you feel the love for me? (Yeah, yeah) I feel the time has come, I hear the sound of drums I hear the sound of drums on a melody, calling me to return Well, light up and catch the sun, 'cause its gonna be revolution for fun Yeah, yeah Can you feel the love for me? (Yeah, yeah) I feel the time has come, I hear the sound of drums, drums Drums Well, I feel the time has come with a melody, I see the golden one Well, I'm not the only one with the remedy, I'm not the only one I feel the time has come, I hear the sound of drums, drums
I saw these guys on tour at about this time at the late, great (original) Cotton Club in da ATL. I thought Tatva was good, but that the rest of "K" was meh. Hadn't heard the second album at the time, and frankly I'd musically moved on from Britpop. Needless to say, I had low expectations. And to this day, they show they put on remains one of the best I've ever seen...
Love the song! But that head-banging looks absolutely cringe-worthy all these years later... Their K album was good, and this song promised so much for the Peasants Pigs and Astronauts album, but this was the only song I liked on that album... It all went downhill for Kula Shaker after The Sound of Drums...
I forgot how shit hot this band was... how the fuck could I forget..!!! They never got the recognition they deserved.
The best British band during the Brit pop era, criminally underrated!
yup. bit later but also The Seahorses
I do like KS, but the only band I still listen to from that era is Supergrass...
It is a great song...
So many influences gracefully blended into powerful , timeless sound .
Even after all these years it’s still a beautiful song by Kula Shaker ☺️☺️👌💪🏼

😀
Awesome band. They sound so good playing live.
How this never made no 1 I’ll never know. That chorus of guitar chords and yeah yeahs get the hairs on my neck standing on edge!!!
For certain, their best song and a psychedelic classic for the ages.
Love those sixties keyboard sounds, underrated band , great front man.
Such a great band! Totally underrated for their time - brilliant songwriting and sound.
I really love this band.
Hearing this in 2021! Still loving it!
Anyone else?

The best performance I've ever seen on TOTP by anyone...
Well there's better than this... explore the archives... there isn't just one good performance..

Wild late 60s styling, awesome
This song is about the Hare Krsna's singing on the street.
What a time to be young that was, we had real original music coupled with freedom, liberty and a total lack of restrictions.
This was the opening song on our recent gig in Holmfirth. A memorable night!!!
THIS IS COOL ISN'T IT?!
this song suddenly came to my head while playing EarthBound on my N3DS. weeeeeeird...
i rember the single being released long before the album came out. I went to their derby gig in 98 . it was with an ex . was a great night

What a fucking belting performance! That ripped. Why the fuck didn't I rate this band in the 90s
I thought they sampled the magic roundabout when I first heard this
Friday 1st May 1998

Drums
Well, I feel the time has come with a melody, I see the golden one
Well, I'm not the only one with the remedy, I'm not the only one
I feel the time has come, I hear the sound of drums, drums
Boy, did this lift me up! Sorry pusher man, no need for uppers or any other shit with this sort of music.
Highest level
Check out Sound of Love - also by Kula Shaker - demoing this tune, Even better (meaning wise, production wise, etc) than the original

This is one band who would have been massive if Oasis had never existed.

Apart from the head banging comment, I can't help but agree with you.
