About the Cathedral:
The Washington National Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church located in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. Of neogothic design, it is the sixth largest cathedral in the world, the second largest in the United States, and the fourth tallest structure in Washington, D.C. The cathedral is the seat of both the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and its bishop of the Diocese of Washington.
The Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, under the leadership of the nine Bishops of Washington, erected the cathedral under a charter passed by the United States Congress on January 6, 1893. Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt and a crowd of more than 20,000, and ended 83 years later when the last finial was placed in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990. The foundation operates and funds the cathedral, which is not funded by the U.S. government.
The cathedral is located at Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues in the northwest quadrant of Washington. It is an associate member of the Washington Theological Consortium. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, it was ranked third on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.
I miss Mass from the late 70's and 80's when I was a kid.
Love this! Ironic how it’s the Roman Catholics (in this case, the St Louis Jesuits) who bring this joyful hymn to this beautiful cathedral. We are more alike than we are different!

Here I am Lord kneeling before your throne I hasten to before the dawn each day to give thanks 🙏 and praises to Your name Glory Alleluia Amen 🙏
my mom asked for this to be played at her father (my grandfather's) funeral. i imagine this will always remind me of that day.

A liturgy that uplifts is worship without limits.

Thanks for sharing - one of my favorite hymns, one of my favorite places. Everyone should have the opportunity to worship there at least once!

Joe I also loved organ music from very early, born, raised Catholic. Still am. I am now 64 and guess what? I am learning to play organ . My point,, It is not too late to start NOW.Just learned Amazing Grace WOW. kevlutu.
Hey Joe, I love this organ and stopped by again to hear one of My favorite Hymns. I am 4 years into lessons now and I play at Church often. I still make mistakes now and again, specially if I try to do a piece by ear ( I am strictly a note reader ) but that is how You learn. I hope that You are taking lessons now, it is the best thing I have ever done other than My Wife and Kids.. The music soothes the Soul. God Bless You. kevlutu
As always, fantastic pipe organ. Congregation, and others sing with joy.

This is a great hymn to be sung when we have the reading of the call of the young Samuel.
Fantastic arrangement! This organ is beyond description. Just perfect.

RIP lord jesus christ [Easter from USA and Canada]
Just Beautiful. Nothing like an organ and hymn and a beautiful church. Thank you!
This is a fabulous video! Anything performed at The Washington National Cathedral is always done magnificently! Bravo!
There can never be too much Pipe Organ!
I love the Washington National Cathedral makes me cry too thanks for putting it on
It's a shame the false beliefs and the politics and corruption that go on inside.
God bless you John
TheJakeman789 😮 Church. " Unfortunately, that exists within more ' houses of worship ' than not. But, don't assume that it's necessarily caused by Mankind. ALL of our faith and righteousness is always being tested and tried for Truth. (Matthew 10:34-37) However, ➕ Christ's true disciples will endure. "
His Love. What else do we have for our eyes and year, Thank you God!
Thank you so very much for giving us this gorgeous video! The organ and singing are out of this world! It makes me want to close my eyes and meditate on the beautiful sounds!!!!!!!

I am here Lord to be changed and become a new soul !
This is a very beautiful hymn
What a great organist !!!!!
To the US Gov; please dont persecute our faith even though you consider the Catholic Church outdated and not with the culture. This hymn gives me even more inspiration to stay the steady course as the Church guides through these times.
Thank you for posting, there is nothing like a pipe organ in a cathedral! It can easily bring one to tears.
This is not a Catholic Church.
@@davidbeattie1366 the hymn was composed by a Catholic (a Jesuit priest actually)
Beautiful hymn beautifully done!
Enveloping as this hymn is meant to be: an invitation to worship.
Dear Qu.,
I watch Songs Of Praise on television in London every Sunday.
I thought to see if there were any other such programs, viewable on the Internet.
.
I like to hear the testimony of individual churchgoers or the congregation singing familiar hymns.
..
I checked Washington Cathedral in my search and am still looking for some other, additional service to watch.
It is nice to use the Internet this way; I am confined to the house.
.
.
Cheers.

😃 " BEAUTIFUL organ rendition. "
JUST BEAUTIFUL .......
Lovely. Good demonstration of how a more contemporary hymn can work in a more traditional cathedral setting. About time they selected this one for their online service. Nicely played by Mr Dettra.
exactly
Stephanie, my name is Donald Mayer. I'm glad you enjoy organ music. I love organ music as well. My mother was a church organist. One Sunday morning, I got up at 7:30. I knew it was only 7:30 and our church service started at 8:30. Remember, I knew it was only 7:30. My mother was the church organist. I calmly walked into Mom and dad's bed room and announced it was 8:30 when it was only 7:30. Mom believed me. I then told her I was only kkidding. Mom was not kidding when she told me never to do that again. Needless to say, I never did it again. I still feel that was a fantastic prank after all these years. I'm 62 years old and have been blind since birth. Music has always been a big part of my life. I'm sure you know there's so much other organ music we can enjoy. Have a good day.
Very ecumenical: composed by a Jesuit; rendered superbly by noted Episcopal choir in the National Cathedral. 5-21-2019
Fantastic! The church is alive with this song.
Pure Love. Can't say much more than that.

Mr. Jeffrey, Yes, sir, you make sense! Picture it - - we all get to glory. We know we will be singing praises to our Lord around the throne. But, NOBODY can agree upon what is appropriate for us to sing. Lord help us! PTL!
I was in Washington with my parents & my brother.
Would have really liked to hear this as an organ solo.
We sing this constantly in the United Methodist Church. Thank God lol.
You mean, thank God for the jesuits!
Sick playing, Scottie. Love your smoothness. Awesome audio sound. Thanks so much for sharing!

For an American organ it's not bad. Want to hear REAL clarity and masterful registration listen to the organ and choir of St Pauls cathedral in London, also Kings College, Cambridge in England. Now that is how organs should sound!
I love the organ and vocals on this video. Thank you for posting.

@TheGaltonian You don't like this hymn?! I think it is one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.
Wonderful!!! GREAT SOUND!!!
Beautiful!
Amazing!
A great organist !!!!!!
great song :) Love it
AWESOME!!!!!!!
I would agree. Fantastic!!!
We sing this hymn at college
Come into me Jesus🥺🙏🏽
Beautifully done!
Here I am Lord - Is it I Lord?
No! - Here I am Lord - It is I Lord.
Amen!
The organ at are church needs fixed so UA-cam is the best I got for hearing organ music
Very nice !!!
Wow...this is the only way this "hymn" should ever be done.
One of my favorite hymns, in one of my favorite places :-)
To each their own.
Words and Music by Dan Schutte
Both beautiful and majestic organs and locations. We do have a few of those here too ya know.... :)
Perhaps it is the quality of the recording, but must say I'd have trouble singing because the rests between phrases were lacking. Also too much reliance on mixtures.
@eliotcantsing
I fully agree. How can they think of replacing this wonderful organ; why don't they just add further pipes near the congregation like at Liverpool cathedral?
Yes you do have some great organs in the US, I love the organ in the Mormon Tabernacle in SLC and have played this several times. I think alot of the differences in the sounds of the organs in our countries is down to registration and technique. This is a good example of bland playing and registration, the organist here is 'just playing the notes' there is little light and shade in the registration. I bet if you put an English Cathedral organist at this organ it would sound very different!`
What I'd really like to hear from the Cathedral is Julia Ward Howe's hymn "Mine Eyes have seen the Glory" sung to Vision by Walford Davies. Vision serves the words far better that that awful tune John Brown's Body. John Brown's Body may be fine for tub-thumping anabaptists, born agains, etc. but Vision is far more suited to Anglican ways.
I don't mind John Brown's Body at all, at least in the arrangement the Mormon Tabernacle Choir uses in their videos.
This was played at the funeral of firefighter Michael Davis
Nothing could make me like this hymn, but I do give them an A for effort.

Dear SuperS.,
Given that most organ hearers are not hearing the organ in person, you are subject to the sound reproducing worker' skill, to create a good sound for transmission via wire.

Dear miss.
Thanks for your response.
You need to try some different cathedrals.
Other cathedrals have got it right.
.
Be more outgoing !
.
I can't hear the congregation singing the words.
It just sounds like organ.
no human voices.
I am a great fan of the Pipe Organ, but the organ really drowns out the choir in this particular piece. !
Which choir...there doesn't seem to be one. They sing melody only.
This was not a video it was a photographic collage which included the church congregation, the organist and the choir which was present when the service was held.
It is scored for unison vocals.
Interesting I didn’t know yanks sung this too, cool
if you mean "catholic" with small "c" as in universal, why wouldn't it be used in a protestant cathedral? Even if you mean "Roman Catholic", most protestants I know like good hymnody - no matter what the origin of the hymn is -if this makes any sense --
@John Robinson - it may be a trite hymn but it's one of the few I've come across on UA-cam so far which has the same tune to the same words as over here. It's one of these new-age hymns, not to everybody's taste. One of the better new-age tunes is Cresswell (Love is His word). It's our regular Introit hymn to kick of the Easter Triduum on Maundy Thursday.
A “trite” hymn? Don’t you love the music and the words? It is one of the most beautiful and relatable hymns I have ever heard.
Where is “over here?”
I literally cannot make out ONE word that they are singing.
Leave it to the Jesuits to show these Episcopalians how to create a beautiful liturgy!
Huh? Lol
Amen to that!
@@JB-hh3tk a Jesuit priest composed this hymn
You should learn from your British brethrens. They actively participate in choirs. Their choirs and parishioners sang wonderfully sung! This one seems lack of energy
If I didn't know better, I would have thought that I had arrived on a video site of the world - - not of "the Church". Some of the choice words listed below, have no place here! Forgive us Lord, as "He" faithfully will.
Our hymnbooks were "redone" several years ago; they are now politically correct so to speak. The guy who did it also left out a lot of well known hymns. He also deleted many pronouns, and other parts of speech, by replacing other important parts of speech. ex".And stay by my side, 'til morning is nigh" replaces cradle. I do not sing the changed words. What happened to the copyright law
Oh well, I love it...and the organ has the means to send it straight to heaven. PERFECT! But, I can't stand the song Amazing Grace...don't know why..ugly tune...and you know? So what!
I'm surprised that people use this catholic hymn in a protestant cathedral.
Connor Whelan huh?
As if you don't use other churches hymns in a Catholic cathedral
Get to the FSSP, before you lose the faith.

Yeah, even this sounds terrible.
There is too much organ and too much of voice missing.
.
Why can't the people at this Cathedral get recording right?
.
You'd think there would be someone with a degree in music or someone like: Dr Hyunkook Lee is a senior lecturer in Music Technology. He teaches acoustics, audio signal processing, studio and concert hall recording techniques and PA etc.
.
Do all the doctors in the USA work in banking?

I can hear the voices well, even the diction.
They need to pick up the speed. They are dragging it out, making it dull. It is so much netter when sung faster!
I am surprised that the cathedral would use this trite hymn with a chorus resembling the theme from "The Brady Bunch."
I've learned to be less judgmental about music and other things of the church. What's trite to some is fine food to others. From the pictures in the video, it looks to me to be the annual acolyte festival with LOTS of young people from all over the country. And to have the tune "blessed" by being played on the organ, it gains status.
John Robinson Just a stupid comment,
Rex TexasAggie Thank you for raising the level of discussion here.
Curt Zimmerman A House of God is hardly the place for an RCA-type radio-popularity playlist. Only the best, highest quality song and lyric are to be sung before the throne or altar of the One True God.
But, it's good to know the 'least common denominator' evangelical and Novus Ordo "Catholic" (Post Vatican II) can allow the mediocre crap to have a place...
What's "trite" to some is "wonderful" to others. We're in a period where we must "blend" styles of music. I used to think this was trite until I got over my insecurities that some organist of consequence might hear me play it.
Organ solo with choir accompaniment? Waaaaayyyy too much organ (and ego). :-)
+Jim Jordan
somebody has to lead
What a stupid comment. How would you do it then? Show us, please. And I see you are a fan of Samuel Metzger and Diane Bish. Surely no ego shines forth through them.
Your reply seems to validate my point.
More like the microphone wasn't put in the optimum, acoustical "sweet" spot within the room.
