The true test of a designer/decorator is how well they can decorate a home like this (or a home like the “gray apartment”). No one will ever convince me otherwise.
Hey Paige! I think it would be super interesting to see how you tackle a trailer house (mobile home). I’m from the southwest and these homes are super common here. Currently renting one but I’m having so much trouble decorating cause they’re so outdated and the long rectangular layout is so odd!
The knowledge that little Paige was rearranging the living spaces of her childhood home is the origin story for this channel that I didn't know I needed!
I have been waiting my whole life for this. Please give us a baby, toddler, child, and teen bedroom rendering. We are in the suburbs because we have children! I absolutely loved this and now I have to redo my entire house because I thought it could never look cool. I was wrong!
We are in the south and ceiling fans are a must. It's not for white noise, it's to keep the air in the room from being too stuffy and to help keep the house cool. Homes with ceiling fans have better air quality and less mold issues, especially in the hot and damp south. I know they are ugly but they are definitely a necessity in many parts of the country. We need them in all the main areas of the home as well as the bedroom.
I grew up in NY without AC for the first 13 years in my life, let me tell you even there ceiling fans saved my sanity on those hot, steamy summer nights; there’s a reason we invented them
I'm from the cold north and ceiling fans were super important in my house. My mom loves are circulation lol. The annuals flipping of thr switch twice a year to either push down heat or scoop up cold. I don't really see how they're ugly like others do? There's so many different styles now. So I always thought it helped with heating and cooling costs. ❤
In the south, you could never take our ceiling fans 😂 but my mama taught me a good rule for them- they should never be a design feature. Flush mount, no light fixture, and painted the same color as the ceiling. So you have your necessity without it sticking out!
Great tips! I moved into a home with a very dated ceiling fan in the living room, and I was on a budget. So I unscrewed the blades (which IIRC were white on one side and glaringly faux wood print on the other), and I painted one side of them with my favorite color and reinstalled. This was very easy to do and was a fun refresh! I believe I painted the white side and left the faux wood facing the ceiling because it seemed the more fun one as the overbelly.
I really dislike overhead lighting, and a ceiling fans do a wonderful job of ‘cooling’ a room (doesn’t actually drop the temp but makes occupants feel cooler). So replacing a fan with a ‘cool looking’ light fixture is out of the question for me.
Love all the warmth and character you added here. The "tv room" is so hip and fun. You also get the sense of a collected home, versus a big-box furniture home. Would love to see how you decorate a smallish home, say 1800 square feet, on.a budget. Great work!
I live in a part of the world where housing is insanely expensive. A suburban home was (and is) all I could afford. This type of content is so helpful and so appreciated. Thanks Paige!
Yes! Also different pattern choices. Like plaid and stripes off the table. Sometimes working with a limited range outside of one’s style can be fun and open up possibilities.
I came here to comment a super similar idea! Paige I think it would be a fun challenge that really helps viewers if you tried a video decorating outside your signature style that we see time and again (olives and hunter greens, pops of red, stripes and plaid, 90s yellow wood modern furniture, mod couches, little lamps, modern art mixed with oil paintings, Roman shades, chrome, large midcentury wall units… it’s such a specific style I can see it with my eyes closed). I LOVE the Paige Look, it’s a huge basis for my personal style, but mine has a bit of a dark feminine take and I also live in Florida which affects architecture and what’s available in thrift stores a lot! I would be over the moon to see you do a pastel challenge, a witchy challenge (incorporating aesthetics in a super subtle elevated way where it’s not themey or tacky), a sultry 60s jazz challenge, a gold hardware challenge, a traditional/victorian elements challenge, a zero Paige calling cards challenge, even a coastal challenge?? Like if you were an interior designer and had clients giving requests, but make it Paige :) doesn’t have to be a whole house, maybe a video could include a grab bag of styles/palettes/restraints with one room each?
That person isn't even a renderer, they just put some pictures into photoshop and sometimes messed a bit with the perspective setting. That is something you can teach yourself in half an hour. Or do as a first semester interior design student.
I’ve contemplated removing the ceiling fans from my family room and bedroom but then I came to my senses. I love using them, especially in the summer with the windows wide open. Breezy.
This helps me have vision when apartment/house hunting and everything is so depressingly ugly. Any space can be transformed to something cozy and stylish.
I would love to see a video of redesigning just rooms in an apartment. I share with roommates so my bedroom must serve most of my functions. For reasons I won't get into staying in my room most of the time is my best option for sanity. My dressing, office, workout, storage, and sleep spaces all occupy a 12x12 box. I'm an adult so don't want "dorm room" feel. I finally have a plan almost figured out but would love to get more inspiration from similar small, multi-function spaces. I will share some thoughts of my own. I am thinking of getting a wall unit to replace a dresser and other storage units. I never see these in bedrooms but think it could be cool. I recently purchased an extremely large desk that doubles as a vanity and a workspace. But I want more ideas.
@@hazelmeldrum5860 I’ve watched but don’t vibe with her style and personality. She does have some good ideas for maximizing small spaces but I couldn’t hang with that channel. No offense to anyone who is a fan.
I loved this design, especially the front room that is usually unused and sometimes abandoned. I never thought to just take command and switch the intended purpose. Its SO much better, and now both rooms would be used regularly. I would like to see you decorate a 1880's Baltimore townhouse or New York brown stone, with no major demo. Alot of shows and youtube tours chop them up and just change the character of the old ladies. I would love to see what you would do to them.
Paige, I liked this video a lot because most decorating shows on tv are major gut jobs with huge budgets designed by a professional decorator. Just learning how to work with what you’ve got makes more sense, especially in today’s financial climate. Also, the bathroom really had old dated tile. A friend of mine found these stick- on vinyl tiles the same size as the floor tiles. She put them on, leaving just enough room so the grout showed. It looked like a new bathroom! 2 yrs in and the tiles still look great.
Your ideas are inspirational Paige! In a couple months my hubby and I are moving to a standard 90's Australian 3 bedroom built house, completely unrenovated (called 'builders grade spec home'). Not moving for the house, but the location, near the beach/ocean on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. I've spent the weekend drawing up a plan to see what our current furniture fits and what to move on, as we are downsizing from a 5 bedroom, large lounge and kitchen home. You've given me so many additional ideas!
Congrats on your sea change! We've just done a tree change and had a similar experience, turning a pretty nice but still fairly standard suburban home into something special. I haven't painted any thing yet except the front door, which is now a gorgeous forest green, but just getting great ideas for furniture swaps, revitalizing what we have, new rugs and lamps etc has made a huge difference. It's all coming along thanks to channels like Paige, Caroline and Nick Lewis
Yes please Paige, more like this. My daughter used a programme which I think is called floorplanner to give her an idea of how her stuff would look before she viewed a small studio needing a lot of work and it helped us all to envision it. It’s uncanny how it looks just like it now it’s done. I remember the Little Boxes song - it’s spot on for this video!
So glad to see this come across- my 1992 suburban subdivision home is super open concept and filled with tons of awkward asymmetrical spaces. That being said there are actually some cool features that I’m trying to play up with creative choices and trying to be more daring with paint colors, bring in antiques, and play up the tall ceilings. It can feel overwhelming at times because I’m doing almost all the work myself but it’s so rewarding to see my home as an ongoing art project.
This video is *genius* you have no idea how grateful i am you made it. Our little family is currently in a boring gray apartment (lol) unfortunately i found your video on that wayy too late and had already furnished the whole place (with, yes, even more neutrals & gray 😂). We are currently on a house hunt and all of the houses within our price range (we are looking lower-end) are a similar, typical suburban aesthetic (popcorn ceilings, orange-y pine wood floors, brassy fixtures) and i know that we won’t have money right away to renovate if we do end up purchasing one. I have been searching high and low for how to tastefully decorate this more * dated * kind of interior and it’s amazing how NO ONE talks about it! It’s like unless your home was built in the mid 2010s you’re screwed or you’re just gonna have shell out tons of $$$ on renovation. Thank you so much for sharing your tips for such a niche yet universal challenge!
I'm glad you added in some greens bc I was worried it was going to stay beige, mushroom and brown. The only thing that I would flag is that in the TV room and family room, you have lamps in the middle of the floor. Those have to be plugged in somewhere, which has to be planned in as floor outlets. It's doable in a larger project with taking up the flooring, but difficult to accomplish otherwise. The shower curtain in front of the glass door would also be a problem bc the minute you open the glass door, it will pull the whole thing down, and when you close the door again, it will get stuck in it from the top. So while I get what you're trying to accomplish, it could be a headache. With windows in bathrooms, I always frost the glass so that you lose none of the light but keep all of the privacy. (Same with the skylight.) The primary bath likely has two sinks even though you can only see one in the picture. I think it would be fun to find two vintage mirrors that coordinate. I've never done it, but it could be something to challenge yourself with and just be patient until the right thing comes along.
My favorite part of this design was seeing the front room as the den (tv room) and the bigger living room for socializing. I only have one living room right now, but it makes me think about how I use my spaces.
I would love to see more of these, because for a lot of people it is the most realistic scenario that if we bought a house we would not really be able to either renovate right away , or buy a newly renovated place. Love the ideas and the content! 😊❤
I live in Florida and the ceiling fan in our living room is a life saver! Especially since we have vaulted ceilings. Maybe not the most aesthetic but it's very functional so I don't mind loosing some cool points to be literally cooler in the summer lol
The tv room makeover was my favorite. I generally like to have a bright bathroom for getting ready and am at a loss on what I’d do with that floor tile if I had to keep it. Probably pretend it didn’t exist and brighten everything else including painting the vanity? A large warm rug would hide most of it.
I love these! as someone who lives in a newer, white box apartment it gives me great ideas, and also validates some of the things I've already done (timber and leather vintage furniture and lamps to warm up the space), and who doesn't love validation
Btw I think it’d be interesting to incorporate other color combinations in decorating. You normally lean towards mid century modern decor and earthy greens and reds, which are very nice, I think seeing a variety of other tasteful interior decor and colors would be interesting.
Thank you for practical suggestions for those of us on a budget. Ceiling fans are non negotiable with my husband since they do help keep the room cooler in the summer. Can you show some that you find would be the best options and the least objectionable? Your content is so much more helpful than renovation shows where they completely renovate the whole house.
This is very helpful - I'm gradually working on updating a 1981 suburban home (which had some early 2000's updates) and I'm going to steal liberally from these suggestions.
Love your channel and what you do. This one did use a LOT of browns and really dark tones that made it all seem a little gloomy and one-note; it would have been nice to see a little more variation with contrasting tones and patterns that would make it more cohesive. Maybe you and Kate can collab on one soon. Would like to see her approach when bringing color into a space.
I really like this one! I own the house I live right now, so I don't have restrictions from landlords. Technically I can do any kind of renovation I want, but in reality, interior design and contruction are just way too expensive, and I have zero experience with reno DIYs...What you did in this video is exactly what I would like to achieve!
Already so much better! That bathroom layout is so bad, what the heck were people thinking?, 😭😂 also the image of a very small Paige insisting on moving the tv room is sending me ❤😂
Love your videos! I'd love to see one where you do a basement or attic room that can multitask as storage and kid play space, while still being a space that an adult would enjoy being in.
Love love love! I’m in the middle of updating (on a budget) my rental, very challenging design, and you make me do excited of the possibilities I can make.❤❤❤❤
I think the TV room transformation was my favorite. It looked so good! Also I think a darker and more moody grey would’ve worked well in that bathroom.
I’d be down for these types of videos even if you just showed us a moodboard type of layout instead of it being perfectly rendered - you’re content is quality either way in my opinion cause you’re talented 🤘🏼
I never knew ceiling fans were a faux paux until I saw this channel. 🤷♀️ No one puts in fans for style, they're for function (thought it is a good idea to find one that suits your decor). They're definitely not for white noise...plug in fans are for white noise. Depending on which direction you have them going, they can move hot air up if it's stuffy in a room or push cool air down. And it is absolutely necessary in a living room. My family didn't run A/C a ton in the summer because it's so expensive so a ceiling fan makes a huge difference. Kinda shocked you don't know this already haha.
Paige, I’m not gonna lie, I watch your videos extremely consistently because I love your filming vibe with how everything is shot. I especially love the mike picks up your voice and how the camera’s always in focus. Care to share? ❤❤❤ Lots of love from Singapore!
I really love videos like this. Upgrading standard living spaces is really great, especially when I'm inundated with tons of cookie cutter, cut-and-paste decor. I'd love to hear your opinion on where to find interesting tiles and different kinds of tiles that aren't so overdone in the home decor space.
Really enjoyed this as my last house looked eerily similar to that one. I suggest doing what Nick Lewis does. Have viewers send pics of their home and you give ideas on what you would do to improve/update them. That would be so fun!
You chose the exact colour I am currently painting my cabinets!! We are renovating a 60s suburban home and trying to keep as much original as possible... More content like this please!! 💕
If anyone is curious, the red chandelier over the kitchen table is about $4500 from 1st dibs. Super cool, but I don't think I can afford it in my suburban home sadly, haha. No hate Paige, LOVE all the videos you do!
My favourite videos are the ones you update your home/thrift things for yourself and friends. You could make more videos on the things you find (even online, facebook marketplace thrifts). And you could make videos about how you would renovate a sofa, chair etc. Videos giving your perspective on how a certain couch shape would be on xyz fabric, or if a piece of furture that is destroyed but cheap is still worth the renovation.
Everything is pretty cool and I agree with 99% of it. The only thing I'm not convinced about is the beige/brown/green colour palette. Overall, it's a bit dull for my taste. I'd prefer it with a few touches of red or neon, as you mentioned in the previous videos.
I love the idea of switching the room that the tv is in. You made the family room with the fireplace look so cozy! Love it! I have a 1990s house with all of that honey oak and can't quite figure out what to do with my massive stair railing. I don't want to paint it white, because I adore wood. It's just the dated stain colour I'd like to change, I just don't know to what other stain!
I love this type of video, how to updrade, with budget, appart or standard home! Is it realistic and it show what are the little things that were missing. Thank you Paige. Have a nice week :)
I don’t understand why interior designers hate ceiling fans. AC is expensive and not in every home where I am. if you don’t have central heating or cooling you need ceiling fans, if you live somewhere that gets super hot you need a ceiling fan. If you live someplace that gets super cold and you have a wood stove you need a ceiling fan. If you do have AC but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg you need a ceiling fan. If you live somewhere with humidity you need a ceiling fan to keep airflow. Ceiling fans are great, I live somewhere that doesn’t typically have AC ( the PNW) and they are a nessessity in my house. I love having multiple ceiling fans.
I'd love to see what you'd do with a typical Korean style apartment, it's one of the biggest annoyances with living in kroea. They're very cookie cutter, they often have horrible glossy cabinets that people think look "fancy", wet bathrooms, built INS, indoor verandas, very strange things going on over here... Would be sooo interesting to see your take on something totally different from a lot of places in the west!
Consistency in style can look amazing - towns in Greece, Italy - even rows and rows of our cute terrace houses and cottages in Australia - but it just doesn’t often work in the ‘burbs with standard homes that haven’t a lot of style to begin with.
Thank you, for this. I’ve been trying to find a video to help me with my boring home. it’s nice but boring. I just painted my kitchen and dining room a dark green, I even did the ceiling and crown molding around the ceiling, my plan is to put curtains in the dining room that are a rose, pink, kind of color. And then switch out the lights and cabinetry knobs/handles. I am going to leave the grey/green color on my living room walls and paint the ceiling along with crown molding a satin dark brown paint. Still need an area rug…the whole house is tiled besides the bedrooms.
Having been a corporate-relocation family for years, and owning several homes that looked like this one, resale considerations usually stymied my creativity. I was not alone. Even the best decorated homes in our old neighborhoods were not transformed as imaginatively as your project. You could do a whole series on suburban homes. What about split levels? Ranches? Split foyers?
I loved this video! And especially the renderings. The collage style visual is a loose and effective way to get the point across and play with big ideas. To me, nothing is worse than a realistic interiors rendering.
i would neverrrr get rid of my fans living in the south. especially not in the room with the high ceiling, fans can really help reduce heating and cooling costs in rooms like that
I'm starting to brainstorm ideas for decorating my small porch/exterior space for the spring. I'm thinking of adding a jasmine trellis in a decorative pot for the scent, as I miss having a garden. I'd also love to hear your suggestions for adding personality to my front door because what I remember of your condo tour/what you showed it looked really nice!
This was sooooo great to see. We have an old house like this and we had done some of what you suggested (pulled carpet up) but this was sooooooo helpful for other areas!
This is amazing! So many houses I've been looking at are like this and I had no idea where to begin with a little budget. I will definitely be implementing this in the future!
I know working with the renderer takes more time, but these videos are great! I think your design philosophy has totally shifted me away from daydreaming about building my dream home from scratch to actively scouring zillow for fixers...
I hope this doesnt come across too negative, its just my opinion after watching this video--all your designs feel the same, but I think its because its your preference. I'd be curious, though, to see you style something in a different genre. Like how would you style an English cottage vs. a Colonial vs. a MCM?
would love to see how you'd style open concept homes. I find myself overwhelmed with the idea of decorating for living, kitchen, and dinning all at once. Like I want them to flow together w/out feeling too matchy.
I’d really like to see your advice on how to work with a corner fireplace. So many suburban homes have them and the typical arrangements you see in designer spaces tend not to work well 😓
Love it. I’d paint most of that builder-grade trim, especially the trim going around the top of the rooms because that wood horizontal line really chops up the height and visual flow.
I love videos like this, it was really helpful! I live in a sad condo and am hoping to make renters friendly upgrades. I just wish I had better thrifting options where I live. Also, I’m really loving your newsletter!

Love this type of video. You are a breath of sass and so different from the other designers I’ve watched. Favorite of mine.
I agree, my favorite too!
The trim at the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling is called the crown 😉👑
LOVING these type of videos
The tv room makeover was my favorite.
I generally like to have a bright bathroom for getting ready and am at a loss on what I’d do with that floor tile if I had to keep it. Probably pretend it didn’t exist and brighten everything else including painting the vanity? A large warm rug would hide most of it.
Can't the tiles be painted?
I love this video. Your tips are so helpful and some I can implement with stuff I already have but haven’t had out in a while.
The WEEDS reference 👌🏼
Makes me want to go back and rewatch the whole series!
Technically I can do any kind of renovation I want, but in reality, interior design and contruction are just way too expensive, and I have zero experience with reno DIYs...What you did in this video is exactly what I would like to achieve!
literally the best channel on youtube
Already so much better! That bathroom layout is so bad, what the heck were people thinking?, 😭😂 also the image of a very small Paige insisting on moving the tv room is sending me ❤😂
omg your part is great but I really hope the "renderings" were cheap or free
Woof, that was my first thought too... The person who did them has a very loose grasp on perspective.
Also I think a darker and more moody grey would’ve worked well in that bathroom.
loving this series so much !!!
I was going to comment on this too hahaha. Love ya stuff Paige, now ya know ❤️❤️❤️
Paige, I’m not gonna lie, I watch your videos extremely consistently because I love your filming vibe with how everything is shot. I especially love the mike picks up your voice and how the camera’s always in focus.
Care to share? ❤❤❤
Lots of love from Singapore!
Loving the new living room light fixture - it looks awesome with the fireplace.
If anyone is curious, the red chandelier over the kitchen table is about $4500 from 1st dibs. Super cool, but I don't think I can afford it in my suburban home sadly, haha. No hate Paige, LOVE all the videos you do!
so much pricey stuff i added in from 1st dibs lol yet we couldn't afford to get new carpet upstairs LOL
1st dibs overcharges the f*** out of everything. Something that's listed on there for $10k can only get like $150 on FBMP.
@@wasselpaPriorities LOL
Please keep doing these kinds of videos. Thank you for the time you put into them!
Yep! I’m from a suburb of Chicago! All homes look the same. Very excited for this video.!!!
love the bedroom, TV room, and sitting room redesigns! great video :)
Sooooo much brown! I like vintage furniture as much as the next person but only if the other items are pale colours….
You could try using a gel stain on it. It would require minimal prep! Minwax gel stain has good samples to pick from.
I love this type of video. We moved into a suburban house last year and it’s a real struggle.
Haters gonna hate.
I absolutely LOVE the indoor verandas in Korean apartments. I'm so jealous we don't have them here!
@@nabimiso I despise them lol I'm curious what you like about them 😂😮
I think glossy is nice but it all depends on the setting.
Please please do more of this style of video! Loved this.
I like the videos where you critique subscriber's spaces!
Most impressed by your 'little boxes' Melvina Reynolds pull!
Love it! Do more of these.
I need a video on good overhead lighting. BAD
Lighting in general. Weak spot.
Yes please more of these! I know you already did an apartment but perhaps a really small one, or one from a different era.
To me, nothing is worse than a realistic interiors rendering.
i would neverrrr get rid of my fans living in the south. especially not in the room with the high ceiling, fans can really help reduce heating and cooling costs in rooms like that
Plus, in the winer they can bring down the heat that has collected to the ceiling
Hi professor Paige I loved this video thanks for the lesson hope you enjoyed your walk!
Love this video so much. Accesible design for those of us not living in the hip cities. TY!
This was sooooo great to see. We have an old house like this and we had done some of what you suggested (pulled carpet up) but this was sooooooo helpful for other areas!
LOVE this video concept! Keep them up, you inspire me!!!!
Design more kitchens!!!! I love this video! Particularly whether to paint wood or save!
I hope this doesnt come across too negative, its just my opinion after watching this video--all your designs feel the same, but I think its because its your preference. I'd be curious, though, to see you style something in a different genre. Like how would you style an English cottage vs. a Colonial vs. a MCM?
I love this topic!! Keep doing these!
I’m SO excited for this video! It’s so needed!
would love to see how you'd style open concept homes. I find myself overwhelmed with the idea of decorating for living, kitchen, and dinning all at once. Like I want them to flow together w/out feeling too matchy.
I’d really like to see your advice on how to work with a corner fireplace. So many suburban homes have them and the typical arrangements you see in designer spaces tend not to work well 😓
Yesssss, me too!!!
Thank you Paige. I live in a home like this and need encouragement from videos like this 😂 would love to see more
Love it.
I’d paint most of that builder-grade trim, especially the trim going around the top of the rooms because that wood horizontal line really chops up the height and visual flow.
Yes!! I hate wood finish trim. I’d paint all the trim. Leave the baseboard maybe, but all the window and door casings and crown.
I love these videos so much. It can be so hard to bring character to some of these places, but it can be done!
Yay! Love your opinions, skills, and style, Paige! You rock! 🤘 Keep up the awesomeness!
Love this type of video!!! Please do more!!!
Ceiling fans are also helpful for us with wood burning stoves to circulate heat. We replaced ours with some modern looking ones :)
this was fun and I want more. I see it didn't get as many views as other segments, but this is really fun!
I love videos like this, it was really helpful! I live in a sad condo and am hoping to make renters friendly upgrades. I just wish I had better thrifting options where I live. Also, I’m really loving your newsletter!
This was so fun!! It was so satisfying
I like those videos! Also when you're giving advice to viewers' homes.
