Is There A Place for Shame in the Christian Life?

  • When we fail, it's easy to beat ourselves up and wallow in shame because it can feel like what we deserve. But that's not what God asks of us. Today Fr. Mark-Mary reminds us that if you've confessed a sin, God has forgiven you entirely - he is without restraint in his mercy. And by living in the freedom of the Father's forgiveness, we profess his goodness.
So if you still feel guilty about a past sin that you've confessed, try not to shame-spiral. Instead, Fr. Mark-Mary invites you to put yourself in the place of the prodigal son, who was completely forgiven even after a life of despondency.

Shame also comes from abuse too, from experiences, from failures. It's the false idea that you don't deserve love, don't deserve to belong. And it thrives in silence, secrecy, and judgment. Realize that God is compassionate, so be compassionate toward yourself as you are with others. He is empathetic too, so be willing to accept empathy and be empathetic toward others as well.
As an aside, I wish we could clarify some of the language used in the past. For example, I now understand self-love to be selfishness and disregard for God and morals, however we need to love ourselves in the sense of acknowledging our worth in light of God's love for us. Some of this language, if misunderstood, can deeper our shame and lock us into it.

Indeed. Our culture has no shame today. There's a difference between shame and condemnation. Shame, lets us know our conscience is operating and not seared. Now, after confession it should mostly abate aside from others possibly knowing of your shame.....

Michael. I think it's good to understand that God is both loving and merciful and just. We do sin, however when we repent and go to confession, as you do then we are forgiven. There is such a thing as temporal punishment due to sin as you are alluding to in regard to purgatory. Yes, not everyone goes to heaven straight away except those we know her canonized saints. It is not guarantee that you will go to purgatory. This is why we have such things as plenary and partial indulgences. However, I would encourage you to read Saint Therese of Lisieux. She has much to say about the merciful Jesus. Also good to look into devotional to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus.

A perusal of the biographies of illustrious figures throughout history - whether secular or religious - have demonstrated that shame emanating from failure has been central to animating their lives and shaping them to be the impactful people they were. A life bereft of shame is one that is also devoid of motivation. In a world riddled with moral relativism, so many people experience moral stagnation, precisely because moral actions and moral shortcomings that would previously have elicited shame are now rationalized in such a way that frees people from shame. Being unshackled from this burden also frees the person from the responsibility to self-reflect and grow. Yes, shame can be stultifying when taken to an extreme. With that conceded, some shame is necessary for our moral progress.

yeah there is a lot of confusion from language I think. Like if you take despair and call it shame, shame is bad. If you take like idk conviction to do better and negative emotions that arise from failure but have a constructive purpose, and call that shame, shame is good. There's a version of shame that's bad I think because it throws the baby out with the bathwater, and there are a LOT of communities out there where that kind of shame is rampant and the source of a lot of evil. But there are other communities where people are so scared of negative emotions, whether they're experienced or inflicted, that they're afraid to convict themselves and be fully alive, and in those places, shame is kind of good if you're talking about a constructive shame that invites the person to be who they were made to be. But then again, people who are afraid of negative emotions are often that way because they experienced a lot of objectively horrible things, and their lives have been permeated by the bad kind of shame, like despair and self-loathing, and it can cascade through the generations, and you just don't know unless you are really patient and gentle and work through the language barrier that absolutely everyone has. Either way, Jesus can find us, and I think we are called to find people where they are, and figure out how to speak their language, and bring them back to wholeness with gentleness. We have to know how to listen to people even when we don't speak their language, and for that we need the Holy Spirit.

You totally surprised me with where we were going with this subject. I thought I was going to find validation, even justification for the immense shame I carry from the lifetime I was away from the Catholic Church! Even though I have confessed, the stain, the repercussions of my sins open my wounds. So what you are asking is for me to remain at the party and accept God’s forgiveness and mercy which is much more difficult than beating myself up. But what I now realize is what I may fear is that in accepting My ABBA’s mercy it beholds and binds me to Him in a way that raw shame doesn’t and then I am literally compelled to do His Will….just as that prodigal son is now bound to honor, love and obey that father who wholeheartedly celebrated his return.

@Theunspokentruth77 I don't think that's the point. Of course one needs repentance: BEFORE we confess. But not AFTER. And this is, I think, Fr. Mark's point. After confession, we need to leave without the sin and without the guilt or shame. Leave that at the confessional. And go with the Mercy, and the Glory, and the everlasting joy of God who has washed you new. Move on.

You are forgiven for sin if you've gone to confession and done penance here on earth. Purgatory is there to release you and purify you if you die in a state where you are still attached to sin. You should talk to a priest or get in touch with Catholic Answers to discuss this if you don't understand the teaching. Protestants use this issue to attack Catholics, but if you study the issue, their position makes no sense.
