This where the Kinks really staked their claim at best psychadelic rock song of the sixites...and while it wasn't the orchestral production of brian wilson...nor the cinematic soundscape of john lennon...ray davies knew how to keep it short and simple...it's perfect!
Thanks for posting. I've never seen this clip before, though a fan of thand, especially this era. Cool gear used by the brothers. Always a fan of this droning sound, that they excelled at. The Troggs also had a fair share of hypnotic-rock, as well as some others, both sides of the pond. Acoustic and/or electric, this sound was a real snake charmer and drew you in. Kudos. This caused me to subscribe and not only 'Like' the video, but many of the great comments below. Great way to start my day. Thanks.
Psychedelic punk raga existential romanticism at its very best. Surely 1 of the greatest songs in history & literally predates & jumpstarts one of the most creative eras in music.
People often say songs are ahead of their time, but just think about this being released in 1965 when the Beatles were still singing "Help!" or "Ticket to Ride." THIS is innovation. Recorded in EARLY 1965 I might add.
Thanks for posting this and other tunes. Do you have a version of "See My Friends" that is better recorded than this? And there is an interview with Gary from the Walker Brothers stuck on the end of the song!
Love this, but what’s with the kid at the end……… Anyway, despite this The Kinks are on top form here, they look amazing. Love how it was filmed, the angles on Ray’s face. He looks gorgeous. Met Ray once seen him three times performing.
I have a question, maybe a slightly odd one. But anyway, so I wonder if sometime after this video but before say, maybe early 1970's, did Ray Davies have some plastic surgery done on his face? Here in this video he's got almost a lantern jaw, and a nose pushed to his left, maybe from an injury or a fight? I understand lots of English men have very distinctive features, but seeing several videos on the Kinks channel makes me think he's had his jawline contoured and a nose job, and possibly his front teeth capped. Was he jealous of Dave's more attractive features and wanted to be like him? Did he have low self esteem? He seems extremely uncomfortable being on camera, like he's looking for the exit. Thoughts? ☠️ 🐒🎾🤔

Any idea who directed this?
A song to an elder sister Rene, who died from a heart attack at 31. RIP 🏵️
One of the most beautiful saddest songs ever...
Ray is a songwriting rule bender and risk taker. His fearlessness in the face of musical conventionalism is inspirational.
wise words!
It's got revolving rhythms and drone melodies...it's perfect!
Glad you enjoyed this
A 🇬🇧 classic God Bless,the. KINKS,past,present and future🤗 🎼 🎶👻
True birth of psychedelia plus when Ray put this song together the great period of Kinks songwriting took off.....

The Kinks were never a psychedelic rock band but yes this is THE original raga rock song and still the best ever.
well..Brian Wilson's songs are rather short apart from very few exceptions
Fantastic upload. Many thanks.
RIP Peter Quaife (bassist)

Thanks for watching and subscribing JJ, I hope you noticed that there are other videos from The Kinks and Ray on this channel.

Even though I was seven when this came out, I didn't discover it until I was given the Kinks Singles Collection at Christmas 2000.
Hypnotic and beautiful

Ticket to ride is much better than this and much more innovated
Impressive awareness of different types of music - in this case, Indian. I love this band!
Yeah, still a great band and a great tune many decades later. Thanks for watching

So glad I was born in this era...
@@iadorenewyork1 that’s was an added bonus. We need more videos of this show.
my favourite KINKS track...
Thanks for watching and commenting Maurice 🙂
What a superb classic 🎶🎶
Great record!
Best band
Gary Leeds is like an eleven year old in front of class giving a book report
I think the brothers were singing about their older sister who passed away.
Yes, I think that explains it . The song seems to be about death.
Such a writer Ray is. Amazing.x
GREAT KINKS
Love this so much. Director must have been watching Ricahrd Lester.
Wonderful
Thank you! Cheers!
*No Beatles "Norweegian Wood", this is THE FIRST Raga Rock* in the history. Rock w Indian modes.
Ray got the idea while in India, before any of the Beatles visited India.
more like 'within you without you'......as well.....Beatles off Sgt Pepper.....long after this brilliant song......
Well no actually See my Friends was recorded in May 1965 and Norwegian Wood in October 1965
Yardbirds "Heart Full of Soul: beat the Kinks to it by a matter of weeks, but this remains THE BEST, deepest, most haunting raga rock song EVER.
Kinks beat the Beatles to concept albums too. Not surprising, the Beatles can't hold a candle to the Kinks.
... this appears to be very significant.
Love this, but what’s with the kid at the end………

The kid at the end is my son, many years ago, standing in front of some of my music videotapes.
Started singing the 1st verse of Beatles ‘You can’t do that’ once this song’s riff started lol😂
ha! never thought of that but I hear it. yet look where Ray took it...
That's pretty cringe bro
Superb
Thanks 🤗
Ok. I’m 71 and always thought The Walker Brothers were British! Well, I’ll be!
JOHN LENNON and also GEORGE HARRISON had to be aware of RAY DAVIES' song writing - -
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙂
Definitivo, leí por ahí en un artículo que les encantó a The Beatles, el uso del sitar por parte de The Kinks, y decidieron utilizar uno
Kinks/Beatles/others - all in 1965. Gets really technical but v interesting as to who wrote first, recorded first or released first.

The first pscyhedelic song? Released in July of 1965 -- two years prior to the summer of love
Darkly psychedelic.
Early drone rock.before beatles
What's Drone Rock?
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 not really a genre but a drone sound has a low, sustained tone…like the beginning of tomorrow never knows
No. The Beatles used drone effect before on "Ticket To Ride".
Dave plays a Gretsch, yeah.
He got it from George Harrison apparently. George gave away guitars all the time.
key raised a semitone...from other clips......but this seems the correct key...E

0:13 Ray doesn’t really look too good there
Thanks for watching and commenting
I actually thought he looked amazing!
Starman David Bowie The definitive biography by Paul Trynka p.52
Pity about the on screen graphics and the annoying video counter.
2024?
It's slightly speeded up 😒

Walker Bro dude, when musos were genuine authentic humble nobodies - not wannabe "influencers" with a 2 cent opinion about everything
We need this video remastered.. with the audio... Someone who can... do it ..
Simon Dee wasn't the guy in Girl From U.N.C.L.E.! No, no, you've got it all wrong.
