When I graduate this spring I'd LOVE to work remotely & be part of a small team of designers for one company. If I had to work in-house, I would def prefer a quiet environment where I can get my work done. Too many conversations at once can be exhausting/distracting!

Which of these aspects was most interesting to you? For me, learning how much the physical environment affects me was something I never expected to have an impact!

I really got a lot of valuable information from your video!! The first job I got after college was in mattress sales; very isolating, very boring, not fulfilling. Then it was really hard to find a job that offered the experience I was looking for in interior design because I left right around the house market slump. I got my break working for a tile supply company and helped customers create unique looks for their bathroom or kitchen backsplash. I like it there because of the company culture even considering the long commute. The company culture included other designers like me who enjoyed discussing their weekends and having a bit of small talk every now and then. They also were the kind of coworkers that would help you out and you’d do the same for them. It was a wonderful culture to work in until they hired temps from a temp agency and they restructured their staff. I was let go. Then, I took a flooring sales job with a business that had a company culture I hated and I couldn’t wait to get out! I took it because it was a decent commute and was relatable to my industry of choice. There was a big age gap and I felt like I didn’t have much in common with my coworkers and hence had nothing to talk about that interested them. They always compared me to their kids to fill the conversation up and I felt like instead of a coworker I felt like a kid. It was terrible. So then I left and took a job in a different but similar field; landscaping. I was hired as a design assistant. Again, I didn’t consider the company culture! Big mistake!! It was a very unstructured and extremely quiet environment one where you could hear your own breath. The lead designer didn’t like small talk. Every once in a while the part time office accountant was in and would occasionally play the radio softly or I was allowed to wear one ear piece in to play my own music. Another thing about the landscape design job is that they were deceiving in their hiring me. They said I would start designing small jobs within a year because of minimum experience but little to my knowledge that was all in jeopardy of what the lead designer thought. She decided after I had been working there for 5 months, that it would take me 5 years to start designing. Also, everything I did right, there was always something either the owner or the designer said I did wrong or I had more to do. I was not appreciated and I never felt I was given the opportunity to shine. I should have noticed the signs given there was just one person my age there, the designer who would eventually feel threatened by my abilities and talents. Never again! The next job I find I will consider the company culture and how my talents will make a difference for the organization. I think after watching your video I know I would do well in an environment that encourages conversation and collaboration.

Company culture makes a HUGE difference! I'm glad you are starting to notice different types of cultures and what works for you... it took me a while to figure out but learning what you DON'T want is just as valuable as learning what you do want so you know what to avoid in the future!

This was very helpful, I had never really thought about the various aspects that go into the workplace. I like people, but I also like the option of working remotely as well. My question is, how can you know the type of work environment you are applying to when you are job searching?

Hey Cee Jay! Great question. These are the types of things you can usually find out in an interview. But, even before you get to that point, you can do some research and try to get a sense for the culture based on their website, what they post on social media, the types of events they run/attend, and anything you find out about the folks that currently work there. It is kind of tough because you don't REALLY know what it will be like until you're there, so the more questions you can get answered the better!
