Shalom! The brothers could simply not imagine that their saviour was their brother after all. The strange clothes, the strange language, … the disguise. This is prophetic of the Messiah
He recognized them but they didn't recognized him. Just like Israel never been recognized by it's muslim's neighbors. I have heard these teaching by the late Rabbi Sacks of a blessed memory. And the whole "tzores" of the state of Israel is in this undeniable fact from Torah.😰🙏✡️🇮🇱❤️
An interesting theory I heard in Torah study, the silver goblet of Pharoah seems to be present both in prison and again used to keep Benjamin. In this regard, the goblet seems similar to a McGuffin, with the story unfolding around the object even though the goblet had no specific power.
There are several stories about “The cup bearer” in the scriptures it seems. The bearer became good friends to the king which allowed repair of the city in Jerusalem from the Israel captives. It was a position of trust and potential advantage for the bearer and possibly death if the bearer was poisoned. Assuming A person of Joseph’s status had also a very expensive cup it would be very valuable and therefore an item thieves would go for and small enough to conceal. Just the right item to use to interact in the way Joseph did. He may have been trying to find out if they had become better men than the savages that beat and mercilessly sold him. It may have given him the time with God to see the saving plan God had intended. Amazing!
Ver insightful parashat study indeed. I just don't understand one thing: When Hashem "reveals" himself to us, will we ever see or hear him directly? Or will we only sense him through Mashiach's actions?
