I grew up in Albuquerque, NM in the '60s and '70s. Sandia Base, Kirtland AFB... We knew that somewhere in the USSR there was a map with a target marking our city. These were tested once a month, in the morning as we were going to school. They didn't all run at once, either; one would start up, then another would answer from the other side of the city... All of them fading in and out at different times, like a satanic version of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Heading off to school, knowing that that sound could literally be the last thing you ever hear. Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it.
That was the idea. You were supposed to head for the nearest civil defense shelter and follow your nuclear attack protocol, not hit the bar for a last cold one along the way.
Aawwww Bloomington the town I was born in! I lived in an apartment for about 4 years then moved to galesburg In 2013. I have only seen 2 thunderbolts in my life one in Bloomington by the mall and one in kewanee in a neighborhood!
Reminds me of a time I was at home and the time for testing happened... Judging by the sound, it was the nearest one to me, and for some reason it was going off in attack mode, but I could definitely hear other sirens in the regular alert mode. It was a bit scary since I know what attack mode means, but more so weird. I also remember some years ago a story on the news about what I recall looking like a Thunderbolt that had started to go off in alert mode after a powersurge. They ended up having to go up on the pole and disconnect the power apparently.
firealarmsnstuff our will be sad to hear this but almost all thunderbolts have been replaced with 2001s Evelin in my home town, Rosemount MN they replaced every single thunderbolt with a 2001 or ASC
It all comes down to practicality and what's best for the municipality. Sure, by all means if you have a Thunderbolt that still works fine and the town is happy with it, no need to replace it. But nowadays the big deal breaker for towns in search of sirens is battery backup. Thunderbolts are not made for that. You'd need three sets of batteries to run everything and the siren itself without being upgraded to FC controls is only compatible for AC service. By the way go out and hear a Whelen in person. They are very good sirens, and in my opinion the best electronic sirens on the market right now.
ThatTechDude The thunderbolt 1000T in Jackson MI Does that P-50 affect which is not good for the chopper because sense the blower turns on and off in every the blower can make the chopper due the blower turning on and off it could over heat the chopper depending what terminal level it’s on...
Lancaster WI's TBolt 1000T, what I recall, would do that same stop in between attack cycles; call me crazy but thought the stop only happened in the first 'round'. What causes that? I'm no expert but love the Thunderbolt 💞
Don't know why the deciders have to fix shit that ain't broke. Many cities are changing out the old federals, which work just fine, for the new digital sirens. What a waste of tax payer dollars
They need to bring these back
I wish my town would bring these back, i could actually hear them with NO issues. The ones now are just way too high pitched.
David Neil yes, I heard what an EOWS 612, Sounds like, in attack mode,...a siren on top of a police vehicle, that's what.
I agree. I will probably never get to see a thunderbolt ever, bc they are being replaced with different sirens, like an ati hpss-16r or an
Hpss-32r
Its either reversed wired or is on a higher pitch level
t-128 is too quiet also 1000t is iconic (the sound)
DAMN those sirens have the best sound when the spool down.
Hear the mighty Thunderbolt Roar!

Today's sirens could never instill the level of fright or grab your attention quite like an old school T- Bolt.
That sound was supposed to herald the end of the world.

Omg
How.does a old siren still work
I love how the blower shuts off and the head stops rotating before winding back up like a P-50 or the Huntington Beach, CA 2001-SRN
Designed to scare the living HELL out of you!
I know something scarier: The Chrysler-Bell air raid siren, ua-cam.com/video/IAMiTfSU7ZA/v-deo.html.
@@angus57720 No, I think a 4/5 port Thunderbolt will do it
It has an A1 thick and hearty blower

Beautiful!
I'm kinda scared of Federal signal thunderbolt 1000t's when in attack mode
With GOOD Reason, Meaning NUCLEAR Attack Imminent, reminds me of The Cold War For Real
Then go listen to a Wheelock HPSA-7106(4) (aka Cooper WAVES) in attack. They sound creepier

Update for the siren and also with Bloomington’s allertor all the Bloomington sirens are whelens and I csnt remember if there’s 2001s now
Seems like the agastat could be adjusted a bit.
That’s weird how just before it winds back up the blower keeps shutting off
It's whatever Agastat time it's set to
Beautiful!!!!!
Sounds good!
You should film the thunderbolt by Eastland mall
I like how it stops to take a quick break in between bursts

This bolt is still there
They don't normally run that way, maybe the drive gear was slipping. Fortunately the blower was running so it had that thunderbolt growl.

I know all people who do trains do sirens
I love attack
You don’t know me lol
This kinda reminds me of the Bloomington MN bolt.
hey its like a Hamilton County Thunderbolt in attackackackackackack
amtrak3501 "thunderbaby" what the 3000, siren, calls the 1000, in TSM. lol!

Is it stopping when it winds down agastat or rcm?
Is it supposed to stop spinning at the lower pitches?
