Informative video, Heather! That looked pretty quick and simple, the practicing on a towel first makes good sense as well just to get the feel of the tool and tubing. Loved the cheeky nutcracker music you had going as well, hahaha.

Wow that was quick. I turned down the volume on my phone because I thought the goat was going to "scream" but surprisingly he didn't. I learn something new today.
No they took it like champs! The babies scream with the other bander because they don't like being restrained.
That was an entertaining catch of Odie... But when we had to catch horses, our mantra was, "When in doubt, bring the grain out!" We'd put a handful of whole oats and cracked corn in a coffee can and shake it. All the horses would come running and we'd just catch the one we needed with a little bribe. I'm sad to see Titus being banded - I just watched his birth video while catching up on the videos from before I was a subscriber. I was likewise infatuated with his blue eyes and moon spots, but as the saying goes - Ya' gotta do what ya' gotta do!
I was a dummy and fed them earlier that day. But I'm sure he would have been up for second breakfast, lol!

Hello Heather, I haven’t watched this video but I’ve been binge watching tons of your other videos and since this is the most recent video I decided to comment on this one.
Thank you for taking extra time to make these videos I know you do get benefits from them but I so appreciate your going the extra mile to educate and teach, I learn something in almost every video of yours I watch if only learning from your mistakes.
Your calmness and optimism when dealing with goat health problems is so inspiring, even if it just comes off that way through the camera it’s the confidence boost I needed.
Your video on how much it costs to keep goats was more helpful to me than I can put in words because it calmed a lot of doubts and fears I was having so thank you so much!
Similarly when you talked about how a registered goat for a homesteader might not make as much sense.. Thank. You.

Thank you, i was wondering about castrating bucks (or more likely rams) after 1 breeding round for meat. Means i could (when i have sheep or such again) breed youngsters, asses their offspring and sell/eat what i have replacements for.
yes!! I know of a pack goat breeder that will use that spring's bucklings to breed his does and then castrate them to sell as pack goats for other people. It's a neat way to revolve genetics from the interior.

I will be banding a boy either today or tomorrow. I think he is still small and young enough to be able to use my regular bander. If not, I'll have to order one of those California ones.
I've seen people use the smaller bander on bigger boys and they just need to squish each testicle in one at a time before releasing the band. I haven't tried that though!

Great video! I wondered about bucks being banded and using them for meat. That's great information. The chase is all to familiar for me. I hate chasing goats! And it was so funny watching you take them back to the pen. My bucks have to be dragged!! And sometimes they hop and twist, fall over and act like I am killing them. Funny little guys. I have a feeling we will be culling a lot of goats this next year. Too many goats and not enough buyers. You have encouraged me to start eating them. Now let's see if we can figure it out. We have never processed our own sheep or goats. Around here, it comes to about 60 per head. Still a good deal considering the price of meat in the market, and goat meat at that.
That's the kill fee at our butcher and then there is a processing fee. If that is the entire processing including dispatch that's excellent! Goat meat is SO good.

That's incredible! Great price. Totally worth it.
wow that's a great price! Around here it's more like $150 for all the processing so I do my own. I either wait until day temps won't be over 50 and hang them 1-2 days then cut up OR, I'll quarter them and lay the peices on clean kitchen towels in the spare fridge. If the meat has to be stacked I'll flip them over and rearrange them each day until I get it all cut up and in the freezer. Bacteria need moisture to live / reproduce so keeping the surface of the meat dry greatly helps with that.
That looked way easier than what I just did, I purchased a Nigerian doe and she came with her buckling because they were bonded and the owner didn't want them separated. I said that would be fine I would band the buckling and he could stay with her. the fear was she might could get pregnant. SO I picked them up and brought them home, The buckling was 10 months old at the time I got them. ... I did end up using the Green bander on him, it was, I am sure a bit more uncomfortable than it had to be but I wiggled his man eggs through one at a time. I did have to try twice while my husband held him down only because the first day I was told by a goat person I was being too gentle. He is doing ok things are drying up I still feel bad, And I do think Momma is pregnant, but being my first goats I am not sure how to know for sure. It is a great help! Now to see what I can do about their hooves - YIKES!

@@SageandStoneHomestead Thank you! Yes they are so bad I started yesterday mostly just finding the pad and brushing dirt off. I am going to watch that video, I just got the stantion my husband is super cool and built it for me, so I have been working on just being in the same space one on one and brushing and feeding but I really feel like they need alot of work. I am going to brush them with a horse pick before work and will snip some more on the weekend when I can take extra time and care. I appreciate your videos so much!

Yes I'm sure. It's cutting off circulation so there is likely a pressure in the very least. They lay around for a day or 2 but then are back to normal

Question! I have a buckling I feel like won’t be a good sire. He’s 5 months old. Can I still band him? I thought you shouldn’t after a certain age.
I replied to this and it disappeared! I'm sorry. You can absolutely band him older. The boys in this video were all over a year and doing great.

Yes! Every tier has the same benefits! I made the separate levels because there were some people who wanted to give more, but I didn't want to "punish" those that could not afford higher tiers.

How long has it taken for you for their hormones to be completely out of their system?
One month per year of age! So a 3 year old buck will need 3 months for the hormones to leave.
