A common myth is that the limited tackle rule was introduced to stop St. Georgeʼs unequalled run of eleven consecutive premierships between 1956 and 1966. In fact, the rules originated as far from Kogarah as one can get in rugby league. It resulted from a game in England where one team (whose name I forget) touched the ball twice in the first half. Additionally, St. George players and officials themselves admitted that the limited tackle rule was not the reason they fell from their pedestal in 1967. Rather, it was inability to maintain their previous level of recruitment of quality forwards.
Souths a bit limited in ability at the time, lucky to win the premiership, but good enough to beat the clown show that was Saints in 1967. I was at the match standing at the back of the Noble Stand with my schoolmates, even though my team wasn’t playing, far from impressed at what I saw. Thoroughly enjoyed this upload though; thanks for posting!
Old " ONE EYED SAINTS SUPPORTER " Puff " THE MAGIC DRAGON " & GIVE IT KING ..WHOOZE ON THE WING .. as a youngum from 64-67 ...I said this @ every match I watched, including Kogarah Oval !
Kevin Ryan left at the end of the 66' season to go the Bulldogs to be their captain coach. Also Norm Provan had retired after the 65 grand final against Souths in which he won his 10th premiership in a row.
That was a hell of a lot of forward power, especially Kevin going to the Berries 67 (politics he told me). I got to know him in the late 70's and helped out with his council stint in the Bankstown Council elections in 87. Meet Proven up at his caravan park in the 80's north of Cairns. Coincidence. @@retrorugbyleague234
Scrums Souths 16 13. Penalties Souths 13 11. Four tackle rule. Leather football in the rain. Extremely high error count. Very little continuity of play considering a lot of international players past present and future involved. Souths 13 8.

Before the ill effects of CTE did him in.
The first season with the limited tackle rule (4 tackles).

An error-riddled match but interesting to watch the legends.
Good to see all players with their Socks pulled UP

First set of tackles, a spear tackle and an attempted head high stiff arm. No sin bin or reporting then.
Where's Johnny Raper? Must have been injured.
