Connecting a Hose to a 5 Gallon Bucket (Improving the Gravity Feed Watering System)

- I have had some problems with my gravity feed watering system for my quail leaking at the point where it connects to the bucket. I had a "duh" moment and realized that there was a much better way to connect the hose to the bucket and thought i would share that with my viewers.

Bulkhead fittings work even better when installed the right way. The larger flange and the gasket always go on the liquid side...the nut always on the outside. They are designed to seal on the liquid side and not outside your vessel. Been working with poly tanks and bulkheads for over 20 years and have installed 1000's....trust me on this one.

This is very helpful for installing a Barb in a bucket to attach a hose for an automatic Christmas tree watering system. I’ve done this and it works. It’s this or buy a bulkhead fitting. HOWEVER. The Teflon tape wrap the tape away from you ONLY applies if you are holding the fitting in your left hand and wrapping the tape with your right hand. Me being left handed I’ll be holding the fitting in my right hand and applying the tape with my left and if I wrap away from me I’ll be wrapping it incorrectly so I’ll have to wrap towards me . I always thought it’s much easier to remember wrapping the tape like you would install a nut on a bolt or clockwise looking at the end of the fitting and you will never fail unless it’s left hand threads and if you don’t know what left hand threads are then this project might be a tad over your head no offense. Just wrap the tape clockwise around the threads and it won’t matter what hand you are holding the fitting.
Makes for a perfect automatic Christmas tree watering system.

Ha. I've been looking for those bulkhead fittings (?) for years, but I never found them because I didn't know what they were called. I'd been using a T fitting that came with the rabbit nipples epoxied into a hole in my bucket. I think it's safe to say that if something non-organic only lasts one season, it "doesn't work". This year, I had resigned myself to plastic bowls. Maybe now I don't have to!
And maybe I also won't have to have someone babysit the animals' water supply while I'm gone over the weekend for work.

I just drilled a hole the size of the inside diameter of the hose in the bucket. Then cut my hose at a 45 degree angle. Force hose through the hole. Did the same with the pvc that leads to my cups just drill the hole in a pipe cap and tap them together. No glue its a low pressure system. Seals itself and about as cheap as you can get. No leaks after 4 weeks.

Thanks to your video I was able to make a bucket with a water drainage system so that way I don't need to keep dumping it out when it starts to fill up
I have been trying to figure out how to do this. Thanks for the demonstration. Those parts aren’t available anymore, but I am going to try a rain barrel spigot kit.
You should still be ordering them from Amazon if you can't find them in your local hardware store. I am sure a rain barrel spigot would work just fine though.
My husband is going to love this idea we already have an account water system for the warmer months for our rabbits but this is going to make things even easier in tnt long run cause even though we have rabbits and quail right now we plain on getting other animals in the future and this will be perfect

I have been using a 5gl bucket for about 5 months and all works well. The only problem I'm having is that I'm getting algae in my clear 3/8in water hose. I'm in central Florida and the sun her is intense causing the algae to grow. I have cleaned the algae from the inside of the hose, but what a pain in the neck. I was thinking of using black hose. What is your thought or experience in my issue. Thanks
Well if the tubes are in full sun and you use black hose you might have some burned rabbits. You might try adding some apple cider vinegar to the water once a week or so. Like a big glug from the bottle to a 5 gallon bucket of water and see if that helps. I have mine set up so it is never in direct sun and don't have any issues with algae myself. I hope that helps.
Thanks Chris. Sorry for the delay I was away for a while. I know about the black tubing getting hot that is why I did not go that route. I tried the ACV, but man that left a purple goo in the bucket that gave me the creeps. I thought the bunnies were going to get some kind of poisoning from that. I picked up new tubing and thin walled PVC pipe and I plan on putting the tubing inside the PVC to protect it from the sun. I hope that will work and it's an inexpensive fix. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Do you have issues with algae growing in your food grade bucket?
I get a little algae in it but it isn't that bad.
Where are the links to the bulkhead connector, etc?
Oops. I guess I should have included those. I get mine from the local hardware store (Lowes around here). But they can be found on Amazon. I am sorry I don't have a link handy for them just make sure that you match up the bulkhead with a nipple that will screw into it.

how did u cut the hole ?
I used a whole saw. Basically a drill bit that cuts a hole. Can be picked up at any hardware store.
