I'm always amazed when a team is working and they work like 1 person. I use house painters that are a father and 2 sons. It's like 1 brain, 1 body with 6 arms. No one even has to speak, the other person is right there doing what he's supposed to be doing at exactly the right time.

When I started framing I was a green, wet behind the ears, screw up who couldn't stay in school. My neighbor got me on his brothers crew as a scrap boy. The foreman's name was Larry (ironically). He was a Native who grew up in production framing in Oklahoma. This man was quiet except for when he was being nasty but he was worth his weight in gold as a framer. He always made reference to baby sitting me and other derogatory things and he didn't really teach me anything in a traditional way, pretty much only yelled at me. What he did teach me to do was observe, think and act in the most efficient way as possible. It was hard but that job was the only thing good that was stable in my life and I stuck with it year after year. One day about 5 years into it Larry handed me a beer after work and said good job. I really couldn't believe it. Then he said "don't let it go to your head". A few more years had past and things got better, I was earning more and more respect and responsibility. I found we had eventually become friends of sorts at least compared to the people under me. He rarely opened up about anything but one day while waiting for material to arrive I asked him how he was such a good carpenter. (He was top notch, he could even swing a hammer with both hands fluently). He told me he had read a book once and invested himself into it. The next day when I went to get into my car to go home there was Larry Haun's book lying on my seat, beat up like and old bible. When I brought it up the next day he said, "don't let it go to your head"...
Larry Haun's work touches people in unimaginable ways that far exceed the scope of carpentry and although I will never be measured in the same ways I feel graced to at least have stood in his shadow. :)

Seeing him frame was what inspired me to get into carpentry not just as a way to pay my bills, but as a career worth having.
If you don’t mind the prying question but how did you get into carpentry. I want to get into carpentry and construction trades. The only construction experience I have is about 3 months over a summer as a laborer at 18. I’m 21 now and am interested in getting into carpentry. How did you get the job at first, how did you get into an apprenticeship and any tips? Thanks and have a great day sir!

Well said, Austin. I'm betting there are many that subscribe to the channel that feel exactly the same. There are a million channels on YT, but this is the only one that rings my bell. Scott, you have a gift, sir. I feel it's likely a big part of it is being from our generation, and another due to the way you were raised. Hard work, faith, and those you surround yourself contribute, as well. What you have provided to us through your channel is simply priceless. Thank you just doesn't seem to be sufficient, but thank you.
Yes I found Larry Haun in Fine Homebuilding back in the late 1980s. I was trying to be a better rough carpenter and his practical skills and teaching really helped me. Still to this day when I production cut a group of studs to length (on edge) younger guys will say that is a good trick. Larry Haun taught me that. Who? Haha. When I heard that Larry had died I felt a profound sense of loss. Having been taught by his articles long before his books or videos, I thought few appreciated him like I did! I’m glad to know now so many loved this guy like I did! Anyway, Scott you’ve done a great job teaching and I’ve enjoyed watching you! Keep it up!

Just retired this year as a G.C. at the age of 66; in my thirties I was a production framing contractor like Larry. My methodology was almost exactly like Larry's; my Dad was the one who taught these methods to me. He never knew Larry, but he knew Joe and their older brother Jim fairly well and worked for them off and on in the sixties in Southern California. Jim & Joe were production apartment builders at the time (if you look at the credits of Larry's videos you'll see Jim listed as well as Joe) before they moved to Oregon.
This video is a good tribute to Larry. I had a copy of Larry's book and I always had all of my employees read it; it explained "my" system (really theirs) better than anything I could do. The Haun brothers (Jim & Joe) unbeknownst to them became legends on our jobsites in Utah, as my Dad told many fascinating stories about them from those days. If Joe was still alive (I don't think he is) he would indeed be a great interview.
I am glad Larry put together his videos documenting the way we used to frame back in those days. Watching them brought back many memories from those bygone years. R.I.P. Larry, Joe, and Jim. The legendary Haun brothers.
As a framer who moved to Oregon by myself 8 months ago from Chicago, I gotta ask. Why is everyone in construction from Oregon 😂😂😂😂
What a compliment to an awesome man and carpenter. I actually found this channel because of watching Larry Huans channel as a retired professional carpenter with skill sets that are pretty much the same as both of these two fine men it has made me feel better about myself and my life as I face my own lifes terminal illness.
What does make me sad about my own business is both my office staff and several people working in the field both builders and remodeling pro's even two of my apprentices tried to talk me into shooting my own videos for a UA-cam channel looking back now I can honestly say I just didn't understand the value in it while I was doing all I could to keep up with fifty five employees and a restaurant I owned the last couple of years of being in business before I was forced into retirement. I can say while I have some regrets about not doing it for the most part I felt I owed it to my people to do my absolute best for them and my business afterall without them I wouldn't have been able to own and run it for almost four decades.
I truly appreciate these men for their hardwork and dedication to their own people and the public. The mark of a great man!!

My 6 year-old daughter wants to be in the construction industry when she grows up. Today I showed her her first Larry Haun video today. She loved it. It's quite appropriate that you would share this today.
That’s crazy! My four year old daughter loves watching videos like that too! Larry, EC, Crazy Framer, etc.
We have a 2 foot piece of cotton wood trunk by the fire pit that never got split that she likes to drive 12d sinkers into with “little smash”- her hammer lol. Yeah, she gave it a nickname. She can’t quite drive them in “one lick” yet but getting better every week!
Glad somebody else has a little lady that’s into that sort of thing. I doubt it’s a very common hobby for them.

Knowledge and faith driven, even keeled, speak highly of others and humble as the day is long. Your sons are extremely fortunate. Remember, what you say drives the masses. I am 23 years old and my parents started building their own house my grandpa came out and helped us lay the concrete foundation build the forms he helped us frame the actual home and when he left we kept going and now my family has a beautiful home to live in

That immediately after we built our home I quit my job at a grocery store and I jumped on and started working on a framing crew the hardest job I’ve ever had in my life
Between Scott and Larry there is nothing I was not able to understand and sir I promise you there are many of nights I have watched y’all videos over and over again until I understood and learned what I needed to learn to be a better and more productive employee Becuase carpentry is not only something I am extremely proud of but also passionate about learning more and I thank you for the videos you make

Your comments on him being a quietly generous person were a pleasant reminder of a conversation I had with my Aunt 7 years ago after her husband had died. At his funeral she heard all kinds of stories about people he had helped and things he had set up for her. That she never knew about when he was alive. Pushes me to do more of those things. I learned a lot from Larry haun! I was 15 years old when I read his book, and 16 when I saw his movies in school... I've spent the next 17 yrs trying my hardest to be someone he could and would respect... You sir are the next Larry haun!!!! And those are gigantic shoes to fill!!! However I will say they fit you nicely 😉
He is a Master craftsman with a capital M and capital C. As a beginning crafter myself I find it is rare to find other craftsmen willing to share their experience...Larry is a guy willing to share his knowledge to make better craftsmen. I’m intrigued by his videos, he wants to enhance his trade by empowering others. That’s how it should be. And empowering others should be the code.
(All day I walk around the office squeezing in, “because that’s the code”, into a work conversation but no one ever gets it)
Larry and Joe....I "borrowed" their VHS tapes from the library. I lost count of how many times I watched them.
Their teachings gave me the confidence to build my detached two car garage by myself.
Larry IS the legend.
I'm from Russia, used to be a professional contractor for 10 years (2001-2011), not in carpentry. In 2011 I've completely changed the way I make money. In 2017 I've decided to make for my little daughter a tiny house (7 feet high, 6*8 feet long and wide) and started searching for framing house manuals. Finally I founded brilliant Larry Haun's 3 series video and made the house using all technics as though it was a real frame house. I said "brilliant" and there is no better word for such wonderful course.
I was very happy to see this posting honoring Larry Haun. I learned of him around 2000 when I was about three years into my carpentry career. And as a carpentry instructor, I share him with all of my students. He quickly becomes as inspirational to them. They always seem to encourage each other’s with the phrase, “Larry Haun IT!,,” His calm voice is very meditating to hear. He is a great person and I wish I had an opportunity o meet him. Thank you.
I had an awesome mentor back in the day. His name is Rick Webster. He is an amazing teacher of construction theory and practice. He has taught hundreds in his career, and is still teaching when it suits him. Before his degree in construction management, he taught me how to hang Sheetrock and general home remodeling. He was my friend in pre-engineering classes. He asked me to be his “cub” for a summer of construction (which lasted two + years). On our first day on the job, Rick taught me a one of my most important life lessons. He said “On the job site, I am the boss. When we knockoff tonight we are friends again. Family is Family, Friends, are Friends, and Business is Business”.
About the time I found Essential Craftsman on UA-cam, I had also watched many videos from Larry. My Mentor Rick said “If it looks easy, it’s because you worked your *$$ off doing it the wrong way, and you learned how to conserve energy”

I really appreciate all your words about Larry Haun, I saw his videos before yours. You and him are to me, my teachers. In my country (Guatemala), people believe, build a wood house is not a good idea, but, I am a civil engineer, but here a civil engineer doesn’t have too much education about wood, so, I was searching for information an then, at least I found Larry Haun videos and his wonderful book, but I wanted more, maybe something new, then I found your videos and techniques, all of them reaffirming Larry Haun teachings and giving a lot of advices about construction… when at least I will build my house, It will be a tribute to Larry Haun and to you

I started as a union carpenter in 1979 in the San Francisco Bay area, every house I built even to present day Larry Haun has always been my inspiration, and I teach the younger generation the same way today. R.I.P...Larry

Oh I am so happy that you did this video about Larry. I’m a 59-year-old woman who is building her own house. I’m not doing the framer but I have to learn about framing. So I found these videos by Larry. I have been so mesmerized by larry’s wonderful voice, his encouragement, his can-do attitude, and his knowledge and skill. My boyfriend thought I was nuts because I would rather watch Larry videos than anything else. I feel good after I’ve watched him. I feel confident. I feel like the world is a friendly place. And then I want to know more about his life. And I was almost afraid because you never know What you might find. And the first thing I found was this video about Larry and it confirmed everything but I felt so thank you. The world needs more people like Larry!

@@oneflymanflies4924 During the interview with Larry's wife on EC2, she stated that one of the questions would be a good one for Joe to answer, so I guess he was alive at the time of the interview - maybe he passed away since then.

Awesome video Mr.Scott and I say that with all respect. I'm 39 years old and have been building for 20 years, and this generation today has become so slothful on work ethics, being a carpenter is more thank an occupation its who we are. I was taught by and extremely talented craftsman and have tried my best to pass that talent onto my 5 boys. We have one of thw most honorable professions known to mankind, we build homes for families to abide in and raise their families, with any less attitude one needs to find a different profession. Absolutely wonderful video!

I love this video! I am also a huge Larry Haun fan (read his book) and watched every video of his that I could find. I am going to build my retirement home when I get home (I'm currently living overseas to save up the money). I plan to cut costs by hiring apprentices - unskilled labor - and teaching them how to build a house. I'm an experienced teacher and I have a lot of construction experience courtesy of flipping houses with my husband. I already have a list of Larry's videos and yours (first on the list - the one you made on ladder safety!). Thanks for this moment.

I found Larry’s videos not long after you started EC, and he was way ahead of his time.

I had never heard of Larry Haun until I started watching this channel and eventually saw some of his videos. Now I’m no builder, but I grew up with a father in the trades and worked a few years in the trades myself. We need a lot more Larry Hauns in this world.

Reminds me of times I was working and guys around me would get angry with me and tell me to slow down because I was making them look bad. I just found out about Larry 3 weeks ago when i decided to build an addition to my master bedroom after not finding a contractor who was serious and took pride in their work. Needless to say, scrolling through videos one night i ran across some of his. Watching him and "Joe" do their thing was like watching water flow downstream. I bet they could have built a house without uttering a word as one was always a step in front or behind the other like clockwork. Starting the roof sheathing tomorrow then will call for the framing inspection next week. It looks damn good! Thanks for all your videos as well!

I discovered Larry Haun's videos on youtube several years ago. At the time, I wasn't in a position to build much of anything, but I was so inspired by watching him work I watched the entire series. When I bought my first house, I actually got to apply a lot of what he taught, and I referred back again and again to those videos as I worked on projects on my property. Today, it's not an exaggeration to say that when I'm building anything at all with lumber that I am constantly mentally referring back to the knowledge he provided in those videos to get me through the project. Because of that series, I feel confident in taking on projects I doubt I would have otherwise. He's as much of an inspiration to me as anyone when it comes to working with my hands.

I'm started framing looking his videos, and reading his book. And that brought me not for housebuilding only, to Woodworking, to the new lifestyle, new challenges and sides of me.

I have SO much respect for that man. Such a hard hard worker, bent over framer. Just watching his efficient moves, the telltale sign of years of experience that cannot be learned from any book or video. And then watch him drive a nail.
First time I watch him in UA-cam I’m impressed me so much.... the way he convey to the viewers is very “efficient “ I’m from New Zealand. I’m inspired by Him... I’m a builder, and carpenter.
