I felt the "seeing a native speaker speak part" I started learning Spanish 4 years ago but only took it serious the first 5 months and since then I rarely ever learn new words and just listen to my 15 favorite Spanish songs. I realized when this Dominican started speaking to me in Spanish that I understood so much more than I would of expected and I was speaking back to him far more than I knew I could. Next thing I knew 30 minutes later and we're talking about the diversity of South America, learning languages and other things. It lit a fire in me to continue my journey because I really feel like I barely even tried in the language and picked up a basic fluency with little dedication. I eventually want to go to a Spanish school in South America for a few months to master the language. After I want to learn French and Portuguese then maybe Russian.

Hey! So I'm actually also a Colombian that loves languages and for the past couple of months have been learning Catalan and I've actually had a completely different experience. Of course, some things such as the future-past tense confusion happen but I believe that knowing other romance languages really helps when learning Catalan, it just takes some minor adjustments that in my case didn't take long. In terms of resources, although they are less than in more well-known languages I actually found many series and movies in Catalan(which in my opinion are sometimes better than french series and movies) on TV3, which is a Catalan website that not only has series and movies but also has news and other forms of media. Some of the content is restricted to Spain only so I would recommend using a VPN and setting it to the country. Additionally, having someone to talk to definitely helps a lot, you get to practice a bit and get to know how it's actually spoken on the streets so definitely check out online websites to meet people from Catalonia because it would greatly help you. I hope this helps! Good luck on your Catalan learning journey and keep up the great content!
That's cool bro I'm American and watched Marshall Powell travel to Colombia and it inspired me to learn Spanish. It's been 4 years but I only studied serious for the first 5-6 months with duolingo, Spanish comment sections translating unfamiliar words with google translate and listened to music. I never really practiced speaking with people but recently at my job in Alaska the dominicans realized I knew some Spanish and they spoke to me in Spanish and I realized 30 minutes went by and I understand the majority of what they said and was able to speak in nothing but Spanish so it motivated me to keep learning again. Hey! Native Catalan speaker here. I think it's so cool that you're learning the language, it makes me so happy! And I get you, I'm in a situation that's, I think, even worse. I'm learning Faroese, which is the smallest north-Germanic language (around 60,000 speakers) and, well, there aren't that many resources out there. Around 6 free resources for learning the language? Learning vocabulary has proven extremely difficult and there aren't that many listening resources out there. I watch/listen to what I can find in the public radio and TV website and I also read articles and so on. This is easier because I also learn Swedish, but still a challenge. I don't really expect to ever speak the language, so it's not a big deal for me not to be able to, I just want to read and know more about it. I thought I'd move quicker because of Swedish and German but, as you said, it takes longer due to the lack of resources. I'm also focusing on grammar and I''m slowly learning vocabulary. Anyways, learning smaller languages can be tricky but I feel like it's worth it!
