    In special performances she does some screaming to give her character more depth but she doesn’t do that in every performance and last time I was this early, Lydia’s mom wasn’t dead.

      I think this is the only way this song can be responsibly and sustainably done. I haven’t ever heard a rendition with high belting that sounds healthy, and I think that’s because the vocal direction the show went with is just not how vocal cords were designed to be used. Broadway has an unfair amount of high belting, especially considering actors have to do it eight times a week.

    Wonderful breakdown of Sophia's technique. While she has talent I hate how many theatre kids are trying to sing like her now because some of her technique is not healthy. I've seen her live and her sustainability was just not there, and there where a few moments where my husband and I looked at each other in shock at the damage we could hear her doing during a show. which explains why her understudy went on for her for a good chunk of the run.

    • @AntiSocialExtrovert323
      @AntiSocialExtrovert323 4 місяці тому

      Yeah, I think her acting is exceptional and she obviously has the look, but tbh don’t get when singers with poor technique are casted. After all, it’s a musical, which means musical technique in professional performances must be properly executed.

  • @meganlovsmusic
    @meganlovsmusic 4 роки тому +34

    YES YES YES. In context of the show all of these glottal stops, screams etc. are really cool but I would definitely be worried what would happen if she continued to sing like that for years and years. I'm definitely a firm believer of a grounded larynx, so I think if she worked on not letting it rise or pinch so much it would sound and probably feel MUCH healthier! I've never thought any kind of raise in the larynx is good if you can help it, but i do suppose it raises slightly and healthily when you get up to those higher notes. I also agree that adding these things makes the voice and character SO much more dimensional though. Loved your commentary!

    I did a class with Dana Stiengold who is also in Beetlejuice (as the Girl Scout and a Lydia understudy) and she gave me some good tips on stretching and loosening up. Between what she shared with me and your videos, I am feeling a lot more in control. She mentioned that she and Sofia share a voice coach so I guess that info is being passed from a coach through artist to me. LOL
    I watched about four of your videos before now and I appreciate your analysis. It's incredibly helpful and a lot of fun to watch you breakdown the performances.
    I'm a visual artist more than a performing artist these days but I have never lost my love of singing. Even after a vocal injury. It's been a struggle to come back to my sound (and to come back confidently). I'm nowhere near where I was but I do appreciate what you and the other singers and vocal coaches are doing. Especially when it comes to doing zoom classes. Over time, things will improve and it will be thanks to you and all the voice coaches out there. Thank you so much.

    In defense of SAC, she had strep performing this so it probably made her voice sound even more strained. She also said she doesn't do the screaming thing every performance. I've listened to her sing now that she's left Beetlejuice and she sounds good to me, though I've love to see you react to it for more insight! I feel kind of bad for her. Everyone assumed she has messed up her voice but as you said, no one has seen her personally so we don't know for real. Then all the rumors that came out like her being rude and using her understudy too much, I just feel bad. The whole understudy thing bothered me because I don't think it's true. When the cast experienced a death SAC cried during Home on stage and then ran off, but she came back and finished the rest of the song. That doesn't sound like someone who just uses their understudy constantly to me. Sounds like a teenager not being able to handle the stress of broadway, life, and school.

I notice that you analyze the singer's voice more, state your opinion, and demonstrate the note or the one that the singer's doing is a very good improvement for me. So I hope you keep doing these kind of reaction in your future video. Love your vids btw :). You're not like "this isn't my preferred, familiar style, therefore, I hate it and it's objectively bad" which tends to be some people's inclination
