@Mike Bailey You wouldn't seem so crazy, if you didn't mix 5% truths with 95% crazies.
"they still pretend Nixon called the moon on a landline". Like, he didn't. I like how you comprehend we can send each other information instantaneously, build giant floating cities w/ nuclear reactors in the ocean, yet patching a phone call through mission control just blows your fucking socks off, lol.

As someone who is studying social geography and spatial planning, most things in this video feel very familiar :) What I love about this channel is that you make the knowledge very accessible for people new to the concepts, yet they are also interesting to watch for viewers that are a bit more experienced on the topics. Always nice to see the enthusiasm for urban planning and architecture in the comments here.

I never got very far in school and this channel is such a source of knowledge in so many area of life. I humbly think that mixing green areas throughout our urban concrete jungle is one of the most cost efficient solution easily deployable right now. It helps eliminate hot spots, provide living places for insect and animal life ( birds, squirrels, bees, ants ) and maybe most importantly, it help with the sanity of the citizens, calming the mood and chilling the spirits, like a small scale forest therapy.

One easy, "fix in the right direction'', would be to allow homeowners the right to grow food in their own yards, (front and back) and to allow water harvesting on their property. No Government or HOA regulations. Where I live, I can have a small garden but to turn my entire back yard into a food forest is not allowed. There are also restrictions on water harvesting. My roof can generate about 50k gallons a year with the rainfall we receive. Without harvesting the water runs off into the streets and ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. So I have to rely on ground water to water my yard.

Such a smart comment about open loop systems, allodial title would complete the picture. But this is not a new idea. Criminals have ruined this area, but for a while it worked.
Muscoy was developed in the mid-1890s as a community designed to
      accommodate family agricultural
enterprises. Roads and water service were developed to serve one to ten
acre parcels. Vineyards, orchards and various field crops were planted
and cultivated. After World War II,
population growth accelerated and the area began a transition from
agricultural use to a more suburban residential character. During the
1950s and 1960s, the San Bernardino area became a popular stop during
road trips. This resulted in more shops opening up to serve the needs of
travelers, and more people establishing permanent residences around the
Muscoy area.[4] In 1989, a gasoline pipeline explosion caused much loss of life.[5]

This is all good, but you didn't even mention PASSIVE heating, cooling and lighting. Most buildings could get all the heat and light they need (during the day) from sunlight. Windows and solar tubes, along with intelligent design can cut down on energy consumption across the board. Cool air can be stored underground and piped into upper floors. Stairs and ramps instead of elevators, solar ovens built into the the kitchen, cold air intake for the freezer in winter; basically removing the need for electricity anywhere we can.

After years of being in administrative roles I decided to return to school (part-time), in 2015, to pursue an industry related degree. December last year, I graduated with a BSc Hons in Building Surveying. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice, as I am still looking for my first role within the industry, but your channel always remind me why I choose this path. So thank you and keep up the great work!

This is why i never want to miss what Fred Mills show has to offer-that aside it is commendable to note that civil engineers and designers are working together make the biggest instrument that we use to live and work in sustainable but these technologies can only become real when unnecessary environmental and bureaucratic politics are stopped from interfering with the work of insightful and progressive yet conscious minds employed or working in the built environment-at the end of the day it is all about exploiting the maximum available space for the benefit of humanity and the fauna and flora around us while putting in check any conflict that may arise from trying to access the same limited resources. The CLT concept is worth its weight in sustainability gold.

In my entire life I have never been as interested in construction as I’ve become since finding this channel.
I would like to see a series of videos on small scale individual homes that have already been built showing what we can do to them to bring them into the 21st century and help the climate at the same time. That would be something all of us could benefit from. If we could “upgrade” our existing homes it would go along way to helping the environment. There are literally hundreds of millions of existing homes in the world that could be retrofitted in some way to bring them as close to carbon neutral as possible.

Hyperloops to reduce air travel, hydroponic indoor farms, automated electric vehicles, large form factor 3D printed materials for construction, water desalination plants and carbon capture plants. Everything powered by large fusion rectors / small scale fission reactors and renewables. Couple all that with a cultural shift away from mass consumption and I think the planet could sustain the levels of current human population.

Am I the only that was ready for "SUBSCRIBE TO THE B1M" at the end instead of "STEP-UP TO CONSTRUCTION"?

Great great great video! Thank you for shining a light on this topic and gathering such a comprehensive list of details and different aspects of the issues and solutions. My only problem is with the title, because I don't think any one thing will save the world. This is why I have problems with buzzfeed articles like "10 ways to save the world by changing your breakfast".

I like this different type of video...its sending a message without being preacherish. Whilst also using stock footage used in other videos :) Great info as always.

This is an excellent video. But you have completely forgotten to mention the energy efficiency of buildings, storm water and waste management., which are some of the most important aspects of sustainability.

I would add that people also need to gain an appreciation for the natural world. I think there are too many people who have grown up and still live in the city who have never experienced and enjoyed raw nature.

Great ideas for new construction! The big game changer will be retrofitting existing buildings to reduce carbon dioxide or even eliminate it!!! Imagine a city clothed in foliage, functional natural and pleasing to human senses!!! It's a whole new world of possibilities all it takes is the will and determination to implement!!! "What the human mind can concieve it can achieve"!!! We can truly create the world we want to exist in!!! It is within our power and capabilities!!!

limiting urban sprawl is what creates crazy property prices. theres absolutely nothing smart about "smart growth". more like dumb limitations.
