Tell her to write down or use a spread sheet, all the ordinary expenses; Rent/mortgage, utilities-gas, electric, water, trash, phones, etc, then figure out how much you drive and what that costs, how often do you fill up your tank and how much is it, $60/week, every 2 weeks? Just itemize everything you can think of and start from there. If you don’t know exactly make some reasonable estimates, are you buying groceries for just yourself or do you have 3 kids to feed also. See if you can find your current utility bills, or go into your bank account and see if they’re being paid automatically and you can see oh we paid &485 for our electric bill in July and only 70 in December but then the heating oil bill went through the roof. You can add up the past 12 months and average it out and see ok we pay an average of $120/month, that gives you a starting point to plan from, then say your current home is 2200sf but you’re going to rent a 1-bd apt for 6 mos then you can probably cut most of your utilities in half, of course cell phone usage bill isn’t probably going to change. Bear in mind in most cases if you don’t already have your name on the utility bill, like your internet service, maybe your husband set it up, then you will probably have to pay a setup and/or first-time customer deposit fee so you’ll have to budget that into your first month’s startup costs. Be sure you don’t forget things like car insurance, health insurance, any other fees you might easily forget about like fast-track being on autopay. Super easy to forget that $30 or $60/month. I find Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel great for these things, but a simple itemized handwritten ledger is fine as well. Don’t forget medications, doctor’s office co-pays, all these little things add up.
