Jack gyllenhaal stated in an interview his dad said something like "art is supposed to disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed". I think thats an interesting way to look at how kubrick's style of comedy was always on display, despite sometimes being blatantly funny (my favorite example of it was a clockwork orange). great video
'Compared to the Earth shattering effects of nuclear disaster, all the pedophilia in the world is child's play'-that was a severely well written combination of puns
What I like about Kubrick is that characters already look moronic and insane from the start (if you’d notice) characters the first time you meet them don’t look the friendly type. And Jack Torrance is one of them, haven’t you noticed how he is already irratied at his family? Then it grows larger in those 2 hours and 25 minutes. Genius I tell you.
And here I thought I was crazy for thinking there were elements of black comedy in The Shining and Full Metal Jacket. The Shining is a funny as hell movie, but what's interesting is that doesn't make it any less scary or creepy.
It's been so long since I've seen The Shining, this video actually made me consider a re-watch, with an eye towards looking for comedy. I'm probably due for a full Kubrick marathon anyway. I did a Wes Anderson marathon recently and I've always enjoyed seeing the Kubrick influences in his work, and it did make me think of watching Kubrick again.
Dr Strangelove is easily one of greatest and funniest comedies ever made. Despite being about nuclear war, following the genre conventions of a submarine film, and being directed by one of the darkest directors in history, it makes me laugh throughout. That's the genius of Kubrick and his writers.
I literally had no idea that was a reference at all. Seeing The Shining (in middle school I think) was the first time I ever heard the phrase, and I've always associated it specifically with The Shining. I wonder how many times in my life people have said "here's Johnny" in my presence and they actually intended to make a Johnny Carson reference.
the thumbnail has changed. it used to be Jack Nicholson's face from the Shining. it's a pity because it was a lot funnier. one of those crazy expressions only Jack can make.
Kubrick films are hilarious. That Peter Sellers phone bit, every Slim Pickens scene, racist ghosts, HAL losing his mind and singing Daisy Belle, the incongruous music over footage of the Nazis, the Gunny’s pride in Oswald’s marksmanship. Even the plodding Barry Lyndon has that bird-like mating dance where one expects to hear Richard Attenborough’s voice-over at any moment.
Okay but that's because Kubrick allowed them to ad-lib funny lines and permitted these scenes to stay in the final editing. He was the one who had the creative control over it, just like a jazz composer is credited for a record even though other musicians in the band would improvise a lot of notes that he didn't write.
very nice. The tonight show clip was especially good as I don't know if young people get the reference. Thanks. BTW Americans don't know what "taking the piss" means.

69th like. Nice.

YES, yes it was. That line stood out to me as well.
I was going to comment on the line, but you beat me to that punch!
Oh, well.
Cheers.
This line made me chortle as a disconcerting register. Very well played indeed.
I watch a lot of these video essays, and that one sentence and its delivery might be the single best-written line out of all of them.
Adam Jenks oh I get it... cheers

Honestly I was laughing so hard in that first half of Full Metal Jacket.
This build up music was perfect I was like so excited.
You must do a deconstructing funny on Edgar Wright
Great analysis, editing and background music, it was almost mesmerizing to watch

We studied that in school a month or to ago it's a masterpiece
It's probably my favorite, although Kubrick was an absolute genius.
Brilliant analysis, literally! Casts the shadows out of Kubrick film’s corners. Thank you.
After those Ctrl Alt Face videos I can’t unsee Jim Carrey as Jack Torrance.
Dude same
That’s really the best way to put it, a film that can’t keep a straight face
This channel is sooo underrated
You have to be over 50 to get the, "here's Johnny," moment to its fullest.

Here's Johnny was an adlib by Nicholson. Using people as instruments is GENIUS!!!
Yes Kubrick was a sarcastic SOB, just like Jules Fiffer, Joseph Heller, et al. He had a dark vision of life.
Always felt Kubrick's sense of humour was severely under-appreciated. Great video
i love this series - will you ever address Preston Sturges ?
make all videos like this one
brilliantly made
Jack's face in the thumbnail - priceless.
that's Peter Sellers

@@sednafloating7027 Ah, I see. What a shame I never got to see it
Am I the only one who would’ve thought that our friend and humble narrator was Malcolm McDowell if he hadn’t have introduced him?
The "Dave" bit is especially good.
"hi hi hi there, my little droogies"
The quality of these videos is astonishing! I can't support you monetarily, but I'll do the bare minimum and leave a like!
Great vid as always. Keep it up
The narrator is an enterprising young man.
These videos are a masterclass in editing and scriptwriting.
This conversation cannot be complete no more Goodbye that line was funny from a computer😄
incredible work! 👏🏽👏🏽
This is incredibly well made. Thank you.
Subscribed. And also to Beyond the Frame. On the strength of this one video, I know I want moar from both of you.
“Pedophilia is child’s play in comparison”
Well that’s a lovely little pun
New videos from The Discarded Image and Rossatron, both on the same day?! Oh what a day! What a lovely day!
This was so great!

What’s the song playing in the background of the opening?
This video is phenomenal - Thank you :)
Absolutely fantastic job. Bravo!
Please do one on Tarantino’s humor. His is so specific and subtle yet never fails to bring the house down.
Oh my God 😂 well explained
Can someone name the movies shown at the end. They all look great
Are you joking?
this was great! thanks
Great vid
Odd you left out Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's supposed best. Did that not also use these techniques?
AMAZING
How do you have a widescreen copy of Dr. Strangelove? I can only find it in 4:3.

What a funny video essay! Almost as witty as Kubricks movies!
Exceptional!
Brilliant!
You make really good videos. UA-cam should've been recommending you long ago. Anyway, subscribing now.

Absolutely brilliant!
The greatest director
That was fucking amazing

Dope
Gallows humor is always a knotty subject. Some people just can't get the hang of it.
This deserves at least three million views
May be I am old. The scenes keep changing very quick. Its tough to focus and changes the flow of thoughts...
I like this video
10/10
Where is Major....PHHHHOOOOM?
a lot of the moments you sited weren't scripted, they were ad-libbed by the actors
Okay but that's because Kubrick allowed them to ad-lib funny lines and permitted these scenes to stay in the final editing. I WAS LAUGHING AT THIS VIDEO OMG... But you lost me with the Windows reference. Try next time showing the booting screen of Ubuntu.
rape? dont you mean ... struggle snuggling
very nice. The tonight show clip was especially good as I don't know if young people get the reference. Thanks. BTW Americans don't know what "taking the piss" means.
I always knew that Kubrick film's always had sly dark humour
*Pantheon, rather than "lexicon."
God this was brilliant, deserves all the attention in the world
8:43 wife annoying hahahahaha.
he sounds like Kevan Brighting
Pedophilia? Lolita isn't young enough for that word use. What's next, you will pronounce nuclear as nukular?
Pedophilia, hebephilia, whatever... It is still sexual interest for a child.
Narrator: "Gene Kelly didn't [do nonconcensual sexual acts]."
Debbie Reynolds: "Are you sure about that?"
dave, stop, please stop.
no.
44k subscribers is a disgrace
Tell everyone you know. Lets get the numbers up!
wtf what a great video
I'm not sure if this is meant to be enlightening or humorous. I find it neither.
