- South African house music genre Amapiano had a huge year in 2022. A decade after it's founding, it hit the shores of the United States and can now be heard at almost any party in NYC - along side other global music staples like Dancehall, Afrobeats, and Reggaeton.
ONETWO gathered some of our NYC friends to get their reactions to the Amapiano takeover.

Amapiano means the pianos. Ama is the plural article form of saying “The” in nguni to refer to an item.
South Africa also had a soulful deep house sub genre call amasaxophone, where there was heavy emphasis on using the saxophone in the early 2010.
The sub genre became less popular due to the short stint popularity of SA hip hop and Gqom. Amapiano in its inception was a lot like amasaxophone but eventually into its own thing, with the emphasis of the log drum and infusion with other local genres like bacardi and kwaito.

Why can't you just be happy that a genre from South Africa is finally hitting the world stage. We are so jealous and hatred consumed that we don't realize we are directing it towards ourselves. I grew up in an era of House and Kwaito myself but I'm so proud of what these kids have done with Amapiano. I live in the USA and really didn't pay much to Amapiano until I heard it playing in a predominantly White club in Boston. I could not help but feel proud that a South African genre has finally penetrated the overseas market.
