  • Add weeks to your growing season! Combine the early life of one planting with the almost-finished part of another. I show you some combinations of old and new vegetables which grow well in overlap.
The essential knowledge is that new seedlings do not need much light, moisture or nutrients. They just need somewhere to start developing their roots.
This can even happen more strongly when other more mature plants are around them. In fact, it's how plants start to grow in nature!
The golden rule is to find vegetables that will finish their cropping life within four weeks approximately. Then you need to find sufficient space for new transplants, or seeds.
With the cucumbers, for example, we cut off leaves with mildew and those going yellow. This opened enough space between the cucumber stems for popping in transplants of Florence fennel in mid-August. This solved the problem of finding space!
    00:00 Introduction
00:29 Interplants of chervil between lettuce, variety Maravilla de Verona - I pick some outer leaves
01:48 Pak choi and winter radish under mesh
    02:08 Spinach interplanted between lettuce
    02:43 Watering new plantings
03:37 Fennel planted amongst ridge cucumbers
04:20 Seedlings in the greenhouse - kale and spinach
05:13 In the Small Garden - I transplant spinach at the base of cordon tomatoes
    06:44 Dealing with slugs
08:52 Using dibber to create drills for directly sowing seeds of lamb’s lettuce around strawberry plants

I sowed one of your 60 cell trays with Medania spinach on the 25th of August (yes, later than optimal...) with 30 using home saved seed from this year & 30 from last year's bough seed (which says use before end 2025).
28 of the home saved have come through & 7 of the bought seed...

If you have a dog that sheds their undercoat like a husky or malamute, put their fur around young plants. Slugs don't like it sticking to them and the fur keeps the soil warmer in winter too x

I'm the same. Started growing on mother's day, woke up and went fk it I'm growing food lol. Then boom entire kitchen filled with grow lights and seedlings. Roll on June and I had made 9 raised beds, flower beds and growing in containers. All of it taken from charles (only done raised beds as have one low bed and the kids and dog trample through it). My garden is thriving and I'm feeding the community and family with it. Trying to empty the beds to plant new stuff but that much grew and grew well I can't get through it fast enough and it's all through following his no dig method and planting beneficial flowers to attract pollinators. Since I started my garden has been buzzing with life, bats flying around at night when I only ever seen them in the woods. Yet have 3-4 bats flying around my garden catching the insects I've attracted. I've got loads of bees and loads of beneficial insects like ladybirds etc which I find all over my rose bushes and tomato plants then wonder why I don't have issues with aphids 🤣🤣. I've watched every single video and can't wait for next season

@CharlesDowding1nodig thank you honestly. It's been an amazing summer tbh just hope the rain stays off longer than just the few days we had again (massive storm last night again, I'm in scotland) just so my tomatoes can ripen that's I've been nursing since March lol. Only thing I'm struggling with is the sever amount of slugs I get the numbers are unreal and if I don't slug hunt they will destroy a full crop overnight and also come into my house lol. Thank you so much for everything as so far I'm handing food packages out, putting food outside the house for people to take and handing food to a local church twice a week that feeds the community 2 days a week. Thank you

Great to see the strawberries going well Charles. Mine have fruited too but the fruit seems small and doesn’t taste as good as normal. I cut the fruit off most of them just to help the energy go into the crowns and hope that means a better harvest next year. Like you the birds seem to have ignored them. Charles your acres look like a gorgeous quilt so perfect and neat. My garden got messy because I couldn’t take the heat on the worst days in August. A few more real hot ones then next week 60s-70s Fahrenheit. Can you speak more on climate change? I just notice that the expected frost date is 6-8 weeks late in NY. Thank you Charles for making this year such a rewarding year for GYO since discovering you autumn last year and gradually building up my knowledge and tools following your book and videos. I’ve made enough pickles, chilli sauces and chutneys and now gradually clearing and prepping up my beds and greenhouse with “home compost” 🙏🏼 again. Is it still advisable to sow winter salads like lettuce and Chinese greens in an unheated greenhouse ( fluctuations 10-25°C, I’m in Surrey UK) or on a windowsill in the house? Also I’m never sure if it’s better to cover them with clear lid or not. I follow your sowing method but can’t see if you cover the trays or leave them open

And it brings me to my question I have for a couple of weeks now - tomatoe plants suffering from phytophthora, can they be disposed into the compost? I cannot find that bit in your book. But I think it is there and you said it is one of those myths that it is dangerous and that disease will spread.

Very smart gardening Charles!! That interplanting is tricky stuff. You really have to know your plants and when they'll be done producing.
I've been practicing no dig for a few years now and most of my beds are in good shape with firm soil but once in a while I run into a bed where the soil seem compacted. How would you suggest correcting that problem? I was thinking of using a garden fork and loosening the soil and then just adding compost on top as usual and hope it works in and breaks up the soil. Or I could just do a one time dig and mix the soil in with a generous addition of compost. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  10 місяців тому +2

It's difficult to give advice on this because the word compacted has so many meanings, different for every single person from what I come across. My beds are sometimes very firm in some areas and the soil feels really dense. Then in dry weather it goes rock-hard. Nonetheless plant root into it.
Firm and hard soil is not necessarily bad! so if your plants are growing okay, I would leave alone.

Hi Charles , can you offer any advice on how to deal with leaf miner disease ?? It's been plaguing my leafy greens all season , especially Chard and Beetroot , can't shift it , even after digging everything out , and replanting things more than once .

    • @eb1684

It's not a disease. It is bugs. Either spray with malathion or cover the crop with row cover from day one.

Digging out Andy?! These insects have been very common this year and my approach is to keep removing damage leaves to the compost heap. As long as soil is healthy and undisturbed, with sufficient organic matter, plant should grow through that and be mostly healthy. Just don't expect perfection!

There's also a lot more alternative food around for them in autumn. I find our summer raspberries get attacked by the blackbirds but the autumn ones barely get a nibble. We have a bumper crop of hedgerow fruits this year so there's plenty for the birds to eat.

Actually, this is something I’m planning as an experiment, for a portion of my outer garden, for next year.
I’ve laid down compost over the surface, with a thick layer of grass cuttings for mulch on top, in a small rectangular plot, about 4 x 20ft.
I’ve heard that certain crops laid down as a sacrificial crop, will naturally work their way into the clay claggy soil and leaving the crop in to naturally break down, will help and encourage the ingress of our friendly organisms, as well as giving them a good feed.
I’ll be trying sunflowers for the first year, but I’ve heard Craidon radishes perform a similar function.
This is an area I’ve put aside and hopefully I’ll have a better understanding by the end of next year.
