Your eggs will last 2-3 weeks past the expiration date on the carton, Ali. As long as you refrigerate them, they will be fine. Do the 'float test' if you are not sure about an egg. So, you should have enough eggs to last through December. Thanks for sharing your 'haul'. I so enjoy your videos. Love from Canada!
We don’t refrigerate eggs in the UK. I buy them by the tray and they last me a good few weeks without doing so, even beyond the sell by date (which I ignore in any case.)
Hi there Ali, I found your channel about 6 weeks ago and I think it's marvellous. It certainly resonates with my situation, and mirrors it in a few respects, I retired early when I was 56 and live alone in two private pensions totalling about £770 per month. I already make 90 per cent of my own meals from scratch but I like to learn how to do better and your tips and videos have really helped. I like your delivery too, very straight forward and friendly with no gimmicks. My only luxury is a small second hand car as the bus service in our village is quite unreliable, I tried it for the last 2 years when I had no car and was left stranded a few times! Congratulations on the success of your channel which is well deserved. I recently subscribed! Best wishes from David in Staffordshire UK.
I have been inspired by your idea to avoid the madness of Christmas shopping and stock for it little by little, and some of your goodies have been acquired by me too! Last week I got a small panettone for my Christmas day breakfast and a bottle of “non secco” which I spotted just like yours. Today the Lidl shop included a huge jar of Greek olives to be combined wi cheese chunks for finger food, bottle of mulled wine, bottle of port and 2 rolls of puff pastry to make some savoury pastries as entrants (they’ll be filled with olive paste and grated cheese)…Problem is I’m not sure it will all last for Christmas!!🤣🤣
I hate watching the ads so yours is the only channel I do it on so you can raise money for your charities! I usually do a no spend January and if I want anything, instead of buying it I put it on a list until February. If it is something I really need I will buy it then, otherwise it stays on the list.
Cold and icy here in West Yorkshire. I too try not to shop in December. I find the prices go up and many of the basics I buy are not available. Taken off to make way for Christmas treats. I also can not stand all the crowds buying much more than they will ever use just because it’s Christmas. I too use the December food budget to restock my freezer come January when the shops are selling off all the things not sold at Christmas and also the veg offers. If I can get veg at around 15 or 20 pence and freeze them they will last me for a few weeks at the start of 2025.
We went to Lidl’s this morning and I stuck to my list! I also made use of the Christmas veg packs at 8p each! Potatoes, carrots, Brussels, shallots, swede and parsnips. Twelve bags for 96p!
😂😂😂 my kids always wondered what I was talking about when I said I needed to go get my messages! That’s spending a lot of time as a child with my Scottish Nanna!!
You've made me realise how much I am addicted to Paper Towels (I don't think I even own a dishcloth at the moment!) I wish I had TWO freezers, like you. You've got an impressive range of foodstuffs stashed away. If I were you, I'd be going round to the Co-op to buy some more eggs ; but, apart from that, it looks like you're going to be fine. Well Done!
Have a great weekend Ali, you are inspiring me to get food plans and baking organized for December, with your super organized attitude. Cheers from wet old and windy Vancouver, Canada.
Greetings from freezing Oslo 🇳🇴😄🥶🏴Refrigerated eggs will normally last for weeks after the Best before date. No need to cook and freeze them until early January 😊👍🏻 You can always use the float or sink test before you use them, (if they float, they’ve gone bad). Great shopping haul, by the way.
We don't put eggs in the fridge here. I always do the sink/float test on older eggs and crack them individually in a bowl first to check. I know they can last a lot longer than the dates say but once you've cracked a rotten egg the smell never leaves you!!!
@ I know; learned that the hard way, unfortunately 🙄😄 But I’ve used eggs weeks after the Best before date many times! and I’ve only had bad eggs once (on christmas eve, which was a bit inconvenient). Love your channel 🥰👍🏻 At 53, I still have a way to go before retirement in norway. But I’m planning to do what you did: Get out as soon as I can, and live on less. I’m saving like crazy now, so that I’ll be comfortable in retirement.
I managed to get my first ever Lidl box this week, it was certainly good value. I’ve been baking, chopping and freezing this week and found it very satisfying.
My best ever box this week, so much including four boxes of blueberries all good . As well as apples , both eating and cooking , pears , leeks (3) lots of potatoes , little gem lettuce , little mixed colour tomatoes and a red and yellow pepper !

I used your recipe for cheese scones and my elderly neighbour said they tasted like her mothers. It's def the best I've tried. I'm normally crap at scones

Hi Ali, that was interesting, as always. I'm not nearly as organised, so I will be visiting the supermarkets in December. Partly, also, because otherwise I might be stuck in my flat and not go anywhere, so I try to make sure that I go out each day to get a fresh bread roll and some fresh veg, salad, and/or fruit - the danger there, of course, is that I might get tempted by other stuff, but hey ho! I've been looking at those bananas and worrying about them getting riper and riper in each video, and hoping you do something with them soon (I'm diabetic, so wouldn't ever eat them at that level of ripeness). Though I know you need them very ripe for the banana bread, it's still a relief that you're going to use them up soon!
@@barbarasevenoaks6821 Hi Barbara. Bananas have quite a lot of sugar in them when they get ripe (as does all fruit, really). And the riper they are, the more sugar they have - so if the skins are deep yellow or going brown, which is what Ali needed for banana bread, they have more sugar than if they're still pale yellow.
Hello again Ali ☺. Don't use out of date eggs! There's a reason on eggs for that use by date. You can get Semonella and it's not good ☹. Take care and stay warm. Sending ,love & light xx
You can test if eggs are ok to eat by popping them in a bowl of water. If they sink they are still fresh and ok to eat. If they float or half and half they are stale.
@@zenabraithwaite1934 agreed. Eggs aren't date stamped as they emerge from a hen, just as fruit and veg aren't date stamped as they grow on the plant! it's a marketing tool for selling and rotation of stock, and a guideline only. So simple to check for freshness and viability.
So the suggestion here is that if you eat an egg within the date stamped on it, it won’t contain salmonella. But if you eat it a minute after midnight of that date it will suddenly have become infected with it? Hmmmm….🤷🏼♀️
Is your suet pudding a flat crispy pudding, my nana died and she was one that made the crispy one and no one I our family knew how she made it, she would serve it with a mince dinner. What will u do for bread etc during December 😊 ps I know your not that old but thought maybe receipe passed down to you, your frugal and with 12 kids my nana had to be too 😊
No it's a light fluffy steamed pudding. That's why I got the golden syrup. I'm intrigued by your nana's one. I never buy bread as I make my own sourdough bread and I'm well stocked up on bread flour which will last me into January :-)
It's peanut butter you get in the pet shop or on Amazon. It's called Peamutt Butter and totally safe for dogs. Costs around £2.50 but I buy a few when it's on offer.
What a wonderful plan to avoid supermarkets in december. Im a sucker for the cheap veg around christmas tho. I take it you go to family for the holiday period so you dont have to entertain ? 🤔
Ali I saw another you tuber crack her eggs into muffin tins, freeze, and then store them in a container in the freezer. I did not see her use them, so I can't tell you if they are any good. Can't imagine she'd waste them. There were dozens.
I freeze several dozen eggs every year. I whip them a bit and put them into a small container. I use them for baking or eating. You just have to like scrambled! They work fabulously! When first tipped into a pan, they look gloopy, but they’ve always worked fine.

@@aliliveswellonless I need to start making own bread again 😊
What is ‘doggy’s peanut butter please ?
It's peanut butter you get in the pet shop or on Amazon. It's called Peamutt Butter and totally safe for dogs. Costs around £2.50 but I buy a few when it's on offer.
What a wonderful plan to avoid supermarkets in december. Im a sucker for the cheap veg around christmas tho. I take it you go to family for the holiday period so you dont have to entertain ? 🤔
I used to entertain the whole family every Christmas. My kids are all grown ups so it's their turn now :-)
Good for you. Loving your videos 😃
How much did you pay for your kitchen towel
It was £1.19 for the 2 rolls, 120 sheets per roll
@aliliveswellonless thank you really enjoy your videos have a good weekend
How annoying! I got red peppers from Aldi to make chutney and your Lidl ones are half the price!! Sue at My Quiet Life in Suffolk Blog
Drat ... It's always the way isn't it Sue 🫤 Sue, from Eating Well on a Budget blog 😀
