Almost a straight prog song, the intro has a Frank Zappa feel. Jeff " Skunk " Baxter going off on guitar seals the deal

This is such a deep track but just goes to show you that a deep cut by the Dan would be a top hit for any other band. It also makes me realize there is not a single SD song that I don’t like. I can put on any album of theirs and not skip a single cut. They are special.

You guys are cracking me up so much. And honestly I was kind of the same when I first heard this around the age of 19, and I'm 60 now, but at that early point, I had already had several years of being a young musician.
It kind of took me a bit into the song originally to wrap my brain around all the chord substitution going on and the subtleties in it and all the angular harmonies and stuff, but then when it clicks it really clicks doesn't it? Steely Dan is just one of those bands that surprises you every time.

An underrated Dan song, TY, guitar at end. Who's Lonnie, who's Lady Bayside. One of the fun thing about this band is the characters they create. I think you'd like Here at the Western World, introduces Klaul and The Rooster......

The crunch of that solo is still some of the most exciting music I've heard after all these years! I alway keep it in my playlist along with Daddy Don't Live in NYC No More and Barrytown.....in a line......Show Biz Kids too.

Lonnie was an upper classmate at Bard College. Fagan was a freshman, Lonnie two years older a junior, and a bohemian artist. Lonnie liked Fagan as soon as he met him, and loved Fagen's music.

Guys your choice of songs to react to is tiptop 👌. As a guitarist from way back in the 60s, this is one of the coolest guitar solos of all time . The song itself is one of those hidden gems that once discovered remains on a permanent playlist. In my case, it’s been 40 years. Great reaction! Cheers!

Back in the day, Can't Buy a Thrill got my attention. This album sealed the deal, and then you have The Royal Scam and Aja (these four albums are my favorites and I consider them their best IMHO, don't hate lol). Their creativity, musicianship and amazing production values back then was astounding.
Also, I've had the good fortune of seeing them live many times throughout their career, and they were always so good in concert. I'm talking ridiculously good. No Autotune just masters of their craft killing it.

This was the opening song for their 2000 2vN tour. They band would start playing the intro and then Becker and Fagan would walk out to a huge response, I can remember exactly in the song where they walked out on stage, I saw them 5 times in 2000 including Paris!

Hey, I feel like you're hitting diminishing returns on the older stuff. That's just my opinion of course, 😁. I'm gonna vote again for stuff of the Nightfly that you haven't done, (Green Flower Street, Maxine); Solo stuff (The Night Belongs to Mona, Planet D'Rhonda), and the best off their last two albums (Janie Runaway, Almost Gothic, Gaslighting Abbey, Negative Girl) & (Pixeleen, Lunch With Gina, Everything Must Go). Unfortunately, I think you got the wrong impression of the new stuff based on the two songs you did.
Thanks so much! I love what you guys do! I watch the Steely songs I like that you do over and over😄

Just stumbled onto you guys, and I normally don't shill like this, but: check out an EDM group called VNV Nation. There is an official video for "When is the Future?," which I suppose is as good an introduction as any. I'd also recommend "Homeward," "Fearless," "The Farthest Star," "Where There Is Light," "If I Was," "Armour," "Before the Rain," "Resolution," and, oh all right, "Streamline." (I did name my channel after a line from that last one, so I'm admittedly kinda partial!)
They don't tour the US much, but they're heading to California in April. See them if you can: their live shows are incredible.
