This is such a deep track but just goes to show you that a deep cut by the Dan would be a top hit for any other band. It also makes me realize there is not a single SD song that I don’t like. I can put on any album of theirs and not skip a single cut. They are special.
You guys are cracking me up so much. And honestly I was kind of the same when I first heard this around the age of 19, and I'm 60 now, but at that early point, I had already had several years of being a young musician. It kind of took me a bit into the song originally to wrap my brain around all the chord substitution going on and the subtleties in it and all the angular harmonies and stuff, but then when it clicks it really clicks doesn't it? Steely Dan is just one of those bands that surprises you every time.
An underrated Dan song, TY, guitar at end. Who's Lonnie, who's Lady Bayside. One of the fun thing about this band is the characters they create. I think you'd like Here at the Western World, introduces Klaul and The Rooster......
The crunch of that solo is still some of the most exciting music I've heard after all these years! I alway keep it in my playlist along with Daddy Don't Live in NYC No More and Barrytown.....in a line......Show Biz Kids too.
Lonnie was an upper classmate at Bard College. Fagan was a freshman, Lonnie two years older a junior, and a bohemian artist. Lonnie liked Fagan as soon as he met him, and loved Fagen's music.
Another gem by Walter and Donald and their band of phenomenal practitioners of the art of music. This band is so so tightly entwined with each other. The production and engineering is incredible. Keep up the fantastic work gentlemen love what you are doing l.
Guys your choice of songs to react to is tiptop 👌. As a guitarist from way back in the 60s, this is one of the coolest guitar solos of all time . The song itself is one of those hidden gems that once discovered remains on a permanent playlist. In my case, it’s been 40 years. Great reaction! Cheers!
Back in the day, Can't Buy a Thrill got my attention. This album sealed the deal, and then you have The Royal Scam and Aja (these four albums are my favorites and I consider them their best IMHO, don't hate lol). Their creativity, musicianship and amazing production values back then was astounding. Also, I've had the good fortune of seeing them live many times throughout their career, and they were always so good in concert. I'm talking ridiculously good. No Autotune just masters of their craft killing it.
Gentlemen - please react to the Steely song, With A Gun. One of the catchiest songs they ever did. I’ve been patiently waiting for it to come up, so I just thought I would request it. Love the content on your channel.
This was the opening song for their 2000 2vN tour. They band would start playing the intro and then Becker and Fagan would walk out to a huge response, I can remember exactly in the song where they walked out on stage, I saw them 5 times in 2000 including Paris!
I'd like to see you do the two title tracks from "Everything Must Go" (heavy sax) and "Two Against Nature". As always, love your energy fellas! Thanks.....
Hey, I feel like you're hitting diminishing returns on the older stuff. That's just my opinion of course, 😁. I'm gonna vote again for stuff of the Nightfly that you haven't done, (Green Flower Street, Maxine); Solo stuff (The Night Belongs to Mona, Planet D'Rhonda), and the best off their last two albums (Janie Runaway, Almost Gothic, Gaslighting Abbey, Negative Girl) & (Pixeleen, Lunch With Gina, Everything Must Go). Unfortunately, I think you got the wrong impression of the new stuff based on the two songs you did. Thanks so much! I love what you guys do! I watch the Steely songs I like that you do over and over😄
I know that this is completely off topic but I wish you guys would do some Jeff Healy. Maybe “Look at Little Sister” with Stevie Ray Vaughan or there was a gig he did in Germany at a festival. He was amazing live.
When you listen to the whole album You have songs that are fast you have some songs that are in the middle and then you have some that are slow When you listen to the whole album Then you realize why that song was put where it was It keeps the pace with the album And the rest of the songs
Skunk earned his nickname with that blistering guitar solo. A great back to back deep cut with Your Gold Teeth I. No loser songs full of loserdom in the SD catalog.
Hey La and Che, been listening to you guys for 2 years now, I'd like to make a request The Police "One World, Not Three" it's a slamming song with a great beat. You did play a request for me once a Jeff Beck song, So trust me on this one, Thanks.
For my money, this is their best album, which is odd, because it really didn't sell that well, but every song on the album is a cooker with great melodies, arrangements, solos, and back beats. Can't miss when you want to Buy a Thrill.
Aren’t you glad you went back to the earlier albums? But don’t short the later, more jazzy albums. You did Walter’s Jack of Speed. Try the album version- very different.
Just stumbled onto you guys, and I normally don't shill like this, but: check out an EDM group called VNV Nation. There is an official video for "When is the Future?," which I suppose is as good an introduction as any. I'd also recommend "Homeward," "Fearless," "The Farthest Star," "Where There Is Light," "If I Was," "Armour," "Before the Rain," "Resolution," and, oh all right, "Streamline." (I did name my channel after a line from that last one, so I'm admittedly kinda partial!) They don't tour the US much, but they're heading to California in April. See them if you can: their live shows are incredible.
@Pablo I suggest you find a soundboard from the 2000 tour. SD opened with The Boston Rag and the great opening that you hear on the album is (imo) even better on that tour.
There is no other song remotely like this one. Pure, original, genius.
I think it's a tango!
Wow
Airplay Beats rules the reacting universe. 🎶
They sure do! They are the only reactors for me…their depth of knowledge puts them in a league of their own!
It doesn’t get any better than Steely Dan
Read recently Skunk says Show Biz Kids is the epitome of Steely Dan. There's no wrong answers.
Almost a straight prog song, the intro has a Frank Zappa feel. Jeff " Skunk " Baxter going off on guitar seals the deal
Back in the day, I had many heated arguments about the Zappa influence. I finally found someone that agrees with me! 🥳
Incredible album. So far ahead of it's time.
One of my dark horse favorite Steely Dan songs. Baxter absolutely rips his solo.
I come back over and over and over for that solo. Gritty and beautiful.
The "Skunk" lifts this song and makes it a highlight on the album.
Love how Mr LA is bopping with the beat, Mr Che grooving with the guitar solo, you guys hear different aspects of the tune

Love the variety of sounds on this album

Another great deep cut. That vocals harmonies on that chorus always seem to remind me of CSNY.
Loved both bands forever, and never spotted it. Sounds like that Cros and Nash magic back there!

Love your honesty… many songs need to ferment before our enjoyment locks in.

I love this song.

Never heard this song before but I do like it . Really different from their other songs the guitar is crazy. Thanks guys
Steely Dan Sunday! Yes!!
Love this song so much!!!!!!

What’s my favorite SD song? Whatever I’m listening to….Another great reaction to one of my favorite bands! ☮️❤️
These dudes were one of a kind. Crazy talent

Great reaction as always gentlemen.
I'm so glad that you've reminded me of just how good this band is.
As usual, I'm with Che on this one. The guitar solo took the song to another dimension and made it all make sense for me
Fantastic song. So many layers.
A great piece of music! Excellent reaction fellas 👌
It’s real subtle Che, but it slaps the whole way through…listen to it again
My fav album by The Dan. Every song is FIRE!! Thanks..keep goin' guys...T
The vocal harmonies remind me of Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Yes, have thought the same exact thing. THought i was the only one.
Yes,if they covered wooden ships by CSN,it would have been great
great selection. When they change up the beat and that guitar solo comes in... yummy !
That guitar sounds filthy dirty ❤
Glad you guys came back to this! One of my favorites.
Love all thier albums but this one song for song my favorite. I think I was a sophomore in high school. I still have the album
This whole album is one of the most musically solid of its time imho
The guitar solo is like there is a fake solo, the quiet wistful distant part and then the real solo comes in hard and tears it up.
They opened with this when I first saw them in 2000
Great guitar solo on this one. The amps sounds like its about to blow up.
This shit is pure hip hop
Slaps
It sure does

We are working our way back up to the newer Steely Dan songs.
The drums are the shining star of this song for me, rather than the guitar solo.
A big fave - there's also an old live version that ends with amazing shreddy soloing.
Top of the pops love you guys
I know that this is completely off topic but I wish you guys would do some Jeff Healy. Maybe “Look at Little Sister” with Stevie Ray Vaughan or there was a gig he did in Germany at a festival. He was amazing live.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD....SWAMP MUSIC
You better bring it on home
Thats a tough track, this album and Katy lied are my one and two. 4:03 you already knew they were going to go in at this point
Same here. The first two versus left a bad taste in my mouth for years. I came around eventually.
When you listen to the whole album You have songs that are fast you have some songs that are in the middle and then you have some that are slow When you listen to the whole album Then you realize why that song was put where it was It keeps the pace with the album And the rest of the songs
It's a great song

Who else can write such a great song about huffing paint?
Or maybe it was glue... I can't remember.Or maybe it was glue... I can't remember.

We got you covered!!
This one takes a few listens, really...
It's a deep cut that reverberates.
I do not think they ever put out a bad song.
I'd like to see your reaction to Noah Jones, Any Other Day, when you have time
For my money, this is their best album, which is odd, because it really didn't sell that well, but every song on the album is a cooker with great melodies, arrangements, solos, and back beats. Can't miss when you want to Buy a Thrill.
Bad Company - Live for the Music
IMO, the whole album is great
Aren’t you glad you went back to the earlier albums? But don’t short the later, more jazzy albums. You did Walter’s Jack of Speed. Try the album version- very different.
We will definitely check out the later albums as well.
How about SD songs that don’t hit you (all the way) for 10+ years?
I’ve had a few of them.
Please! React to 'Proclamation' by Gentle Giant!

This song has one of my favorite intros of all the SD songs.
Mine too
@Pablo I suggest you find a soundboard from the 2000 tour. SD opened with The Boston Rag and the great opening that you hear on the album is (imo) even better on that tour.
@@hklinker Wow! After riffing on that chord changes for a while, when the horns came in with that melody, goosebumps! Thank you so much for the info!
Happy to assist a member of the greater Dandom.
I agree! Not my favorite SD tune but that guitar solo and the rest of the song are fire... Hidden gem from my least favorite album.
I must agree with Chi, I didn't like it till the guitar solo part.
