South African Steam: Garratt GO 2575 Caledon Line

- Join South African Garratt GO 2575 for an afternoon in the Cape mountains. Starting near Elgin, the GO hauls a mixed train east towards Caledon. After descending the tortuous curves of Houhoek pass, the GO stops for servicing at Bot River and crosses a short grain train hauled by 35 Class diesels. From Bot River, the GO enjoys a short descent to cross the Bot River itself, before ascending the seemingly endless curves and grades towards Die Vlei. The roar of the GO is amazing as it does what Garratt's do best!
Thanks for this incredible footage. Excellent clarity 👌
Thanks!
Than you so much for reminding me of those wonderful trains we took for granted in those good old days. Ex SAR&H employee.
Good times and great trains!
Thanks for the memories! My mother sometimes took us by train from Sommerset West to Bot River when we were kids. The two bridges in the Houhoek Pass were always a highlight! The garrats were the ultimate steam machines!
Incredible machines in amazing scenery.
Amazing video, many thanks for posting it.
Alan.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much for another great clip. Straight into the favourites
Thank you!
I just love these steamin' beasts.
thx for sharin'
Those Garratts are some amazing locos!
This day was the main reasons for my trip to SA, to get to grips with a real live Garratt. I wasn't disappointed.
What a day! And the next few!
Love to see these trains.Grew up wih steam.Ilovo beach -Durban.mother Joan Harrington.(Sheila)
A great part of the country
That two people must be Diesel lovers. Because i'm a Very Big Steam Lover.
Thanks for the upload.
:) Yes, there are a couple of people who seem to dislike any video i upload! Good luck to them, I say!
Great video!! I know it's not true but I often think of Africa as either being jungle or desert, but the landscape in the video looks like farm land and a lot of pasture but I din't see any livestock! How can this be, being that agriculture is the foundation of any civilization?
Anyway, I loved the engine and so glad that it has been saved! It must have been a great adventure to ride this train! Well done!
Like any country, different regions have different landscapes.
Yes it's a very diverse country
Beautiful! (Who on earth are the two people who disliked this video, and why???)
+Ray Theron Thanks! Not sure about the dislikes - for a while there somebody was routinely disliking my videos for a while!
Did you not know some people(trolls) wander through UA-cam trashing anything that is good and stirring up controversy. Best not react to their comments, so that they move away.
They are always haters, no mater what!
I am pretty sure there were no mielies (maze) in that train at Bot River. Not many mielie plantations here between the wheat and canola fields. Although maze is getting a footgrip near Riviersonderend area. But the planned rail link between Protem and Swellendam never happened
Thanks Deon
Trevor, you never disappoint us with your spectacular photography & superb sound tracks. Fabulous & thanks a million. Is there an address I could send you some stuff from Canada? Noel Tyler.
Hi Noel, thanks for your kind comments! One of my videos here features GF and GMAM double heading from PMB to Albert Falls and the GF to New Hanover. You can contact me on trevor.staats at gmail. Thanks.
Mix Train - Goods & Passengers.
Yep.
are the polluted or non polluted brother ?
+Dorje Lama I'm sure they are only using clean coal non-polluting technology.
thanks brother btw awesome video like it
Remember coal used to be trees. And the bulk of all trees is actually carbon taking from the air. So all this beautiful smoke could even be good for trees and plants.
