Love that you're talking about this! I will always advocate for using a hammer on the Monolith
I'll always advocate for using building hammers over any other hammer personally (except maybe fighting hammer if you're rushed and really want a specific troop leveled). I used to buy strictly hero hammers because i was so lazy farming dark elixir at early th15, especially with having pet and lab upgrades on top of heroes. But in terms of actually progressing its just not worth compared to the time you save with building hammers. Especially now with the hero pot change, you can kind of afford to not rush your heroes even if you're a massive war player.

i only uses league medals for hammer of heros, (because the most painful to upgrades is heros and walls). i didn't want joined the wars without heros. now my heros was max on th14, start from now im saving my league medals for up next th15, all 4 heros need 10 more level on th15, it might helpful soon
Does the hammer cooldown start when a hammer is used or when a hammer is purchased? I currently have all hammers as I'm about to be a th15. I want to know if I can quickly buy more hammers and use two swings once I am th15

Even if the lab is upgrading a troop , you can buy a hammer of building , and use the hammer to upgrade another troop . Great if your labs busy after cwl

Else I dont use it. Hammer of Building and Fighting gives better value
