  • How to Preach WITHOUT Notes (Part 1 of 2). Grab your FREE 21-Day Guide to Creating Killer Sermons: preachingdonke...
We’ve all seen this happen. The preacher walks up to the stage with a Bible, some pieces of paper, and a binder. He spends the first few seconds placing everything on the podium. While he’s doing this the audience is mostly looking at the top of his head as he looks down.
As he begins speaking he reads from one piece of paper, looks up, finds another one in his binder, reads it, looks up again, and then looks down for his next idea. Aside from the sloppiness and the seemingly un-prepared vibe this gives off - it also risks not engaging the audience.
Let’s contrast that scenario with the preacher who gets up on stage and speaks with clarity and command of the room, engages everyone with eye contact and energy, and you never see him look down, fumble through pages, or read from anything but the Bible.
From a communications perspective, the preacher in our first scenario is far less likely to connect with his listeners. He is missing a vital aspect of capturing people’s attention immediately.
Considering the fact that I’d like to avoid making the fatal mistakes the preacher in the first scenario made, I began to be intrigued with this idea: What if I could train myself to not need notes at all? What if I could prepare in such a way that I could deliver a message and never look down, but maintain eye contact and physical engagement with my listeners from start to finish?
    What if you could, too?
In this episode, I want to share with you how I've trained myself to preach without looking at my notes.

I came across this teaching while searching on how to prepare your first sermon and I must say this has helped me so much. Thank you for sharing you've opened my eyes to the truth of bringing God's message to his people. I'll be sharing my first sermon soon as a first-time preacher and I'm trusting God. This is sent from South Africa with great appreciation. God bless you.

Good evening my fellow preaching Brother. as always excellent concept on using little to no notes. I have been wrestling with this approach for a few months and what you presented is essential and very practical. If possible could you so kindly post the two steps verbiage that you discussed or will you make them available in the final session?
    Blessing

The easiest way to teach or preach without notes is to select a topic that you have extensive experience or education in. For example, if you teach on a topic that you use to witness, you will have practice and passion. I can speak for hours on getting good grades (John 14:26, Psalms 119:99-100, I John 2:27, James 1:5, Daniel 1:17-20), evangelism technique, overcoming temptation, how to intercede for others, because these are topics that I have extensive practice in. If I select some topic that is new, it might be flat. I avoid flat sermons, so 99% of the time, I teach a sermon that I taught before.
Also If I preach, I teach 3 topics about 10 minutes each with a fiery ending. You need a fiery ending if you are going to do an alter call. I do not prepare too much the first topic or introduction, but rather warm up my voice the first 10 minutes teaching. People remember how you finish, not how you start. I know that this is contrary to what is taught, but you cannot preach 20 minutes, blow out your voice and finish weak, they will never invite you back. And I hear people say about these beginners, "He doesn't know how to preach!"

It’s ironic that a presentation about not relying on notes, is being presented by reading notes. I’m I missing something ?

It’s not a contest, in most cases it’s incredibly irresponsible, and dangerous.
