"Big fan of Murder."
- Graham 2023
Another weird thing about Scuttling Death is, it's not as overcosted as you might think (probably still is, really) because it was made way back in the day when damage on the stack was still a thing. So, not only could it actually trade with 5-toughness creatures, but you could even trade in combat, sacrifice it to kill a random X/1 on the side, and then Soulshift something else from your graveyard for a casual 3-for-1. And that's before you consider the thing you soulshifted could also have Soulshift.
6:45 that’s why Demolition Field was made
That Murder is from Fiora! As well as many other murders! Greenwood Sentinel is a cheeky nod at the prior CEO of WotC, whose last name was Greenwood, and because of that, it only seems logical to put the elf on Dominaria.
Phyrexian Soulgorger sees play in fling decks, such as Ziatora, The Incinerator or Brian Stoutarm.
I was thinking Varolz.
Oh, that makes sense.
it's rather effective in Selvala (the good one, not the weird one)
Phyrexian Soulgorger is a decent card in certain commander decks, such as Jon Irenicus Shattered One and Greven Predator Captain, typically you're ignoring the cumulative upkeep entirely and just using it for its cheap body. It's also a card that only has one other printing, hence the whopping $1 price tag.
Still not amazing in Jon Irenicus, because the player you "gift" it to can just ignore the cumulative upkeep cost (they can choose not to pay it, which would make you sacrifice it, but it has "can't be sacrificed," so it just stays). Greven is a better use, or any other deck where all you care about is getting it on the battlefield and then sacrificing it immediately.
How does Jon Irenicus work with the cumulative upkeep? They just choose not to pay the upkeep cost, but it can't be sac'ed so it sticks around?
Clearly the blood poet is from Ixalan after the Legion of Dusk heard about this whole “warrior-poet” thing and did it for themselves. You can also tell because the art clearly depicts rare, Ixalan flowers that go invisible in the proximity to exposed blood.
Let's hear it for Graham "Big Fan of Murder" Stark.
Spark seems like a really interesting mechanic that could absolutely exist in the normal magic rules. Neat.
it seems like an interesting designspace mix of both Energy Counters and Planeswalker themeing which actually works reasonably well. My major issue with it as formatted is the potential anti-synergy for having more potential abilities on the field at a given time.
As written, it almost feels like a softer way to disincentivize multiples on the field compared to Legendary, while still technically allowing you to have more creatures in play.
@@pogowitwiz I think the strategy with Spark would probably be to have some creature with a big +3 (or whatever) ability to built up your counters, plenty of proliferate, and then you pop off with some big -12 (or whatever) ability some turns later. Jury's out on whether or not that would actually be good, but it's potentially some Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God nonsense.
@@Gemini476 Now I'm dreading the idea of using a -X ability in combination with the infinite Copy Jaces combo.
One thing you could do is have many creatures with different +/- abilities to give yourself utility. Kind of be a repeatable Cryptic Command. Could be a reactive sort of deck.
Spicy Field of Ruin synergy in EDH: with Ob Nixilis, Unshackled on the battlefield, when you activate Field of Ruin, everyone has to search their library, causing them to sacrifice a creature and lose 10 life.
Just wait until Graham learns about Demolition Field!
They were just the most recent printings because they would have had the most up to date rules text.
Fond memories of asking my friend which ent I'm going to crush.
(I'm going to crush *dis* ent, of course.)
@6:41 Interesting note about Field of Ruin in multiplayer: because of the templating that allowed every player to grab a Basic that Graham noted here, WOTC printed Demolition Field in Brother's War that has "fixed" this to only allow for you and the targeted player to search. If you want to run this sort of effect, use Demolition Field instead of Field of Ruin.
Granted, in EDH, you have much better options than either, like just casting Armageddon like a real power gamer. :)
field of ruin is a fun hug card.
Sliver eldrazi abomination and banding sliver are my two favroite cards in the set
So if I remember correctly the first mystery booster convention edition which was one of the first unknown events then there was mystery booster which didn’t have playtest then there was mystery booster wpn which did have the playtest but they had the planeswalker symbol like all the other reprints in the set
"I'm a big fan of murder" graham stark 2024 murder trial of Benjamin wheeler
Crazy how Karlach and Fire Elemental have the same cmc & P/T
The reason behind Phyrexian Soulgorger is that you're missing its point in card evaluation. It's a solid cheap role player in sacrifice-oriented decks that love having more ways to throw meaningless 0/1 tokens and other shash into the bin for value. It also flings very well, discards from hand for a variety of effects, and reveals / flips out of deck for other things effectively (great low-value Cascade hit, etc)
There's a good reason the queue never fired for Mystery Booster at MagicCon Vegas - there was no on-demand queue like at the other MagicCons.
I knew it had to happen eventually, but I was sad to see it go. Glad that I got to do a bunch of them at other MagicCons.
Youre not really wrong about field of ruin graham. It was still played for a while because plenty of people dont have the money to spend on strip mine or wasteland so field of ruin and tectonic edge were the next best thing. Then demolition field came along in brothers war which is literally field of ruin but fixed for multiplayer; only you and the person whose land you blew up get to grab a basic
Love a good mystyboosty
I had the same Field of Ruin revelation when they printed Demolition Field and I was like "reading the card explains why the card isn't a functional reprint of FoR"
Phyrexian soulgorger is a dollar because it is old. Also, it is playable in exclusively my power matters commander deck
Eh. It's decent filler in any Fling/Haste deck that can use it.
Brother's War introduced a "fixed" Field of Ruin. Nobody in my EDH circles have adopted it. We like the political capital of, "Hey, remember that land I got you?"
You can still play actual Strip Mine in Commander, so yeah, I don't really think Field of Ruin is getting there.
That's me! Hahaa i had a whole box, had I known, ida offered to do one with it lol
Soulgorger has won me many games in my Selvala EDH deck, pretty consistently too. 😁
I use the soulgorger in my Jarad Deck. 3 mana for 8 damage to every opponent is solid.
Don't most of the core sets technically take place on the plane of shandalor?
Some of them, but definitely not the most. For example Fire Elemental comes all the way from Alpha, so it's from Dominaria 😊
@@sallomon2357 That art of fire elemental is on Zendikar. It has quotes from "Jeflin, Vastwood shaman". The original art is almost certainly of a Dominarian elemental though.
@@JuniperHatesTwitterlikeHandles oh, right. Didn't check it beforehand, oops. There is, however, a modern printing of Fire Elemental (with different art) that's set on Dominaria and its in... Dominaria. The same version was reprinted in M20, so that's probably where the confusion on my part came from.
sweet Lili pull
Graham adopt me.
Lilliana has to be boiling alive in that dress
Crack! A! Pack!
Unfortunately land destruction is very frowned upon in multiplayer games. My LGS had one guy play something like this in his deck and they kicked him out.
It’s just silly and it’s just a game, sometimes things die or get sacced, or gets murdered. It’s one of my least favorite parts of commander. People care about you pathing/doom blade/murder/etc one of their degenerate creatures, but don’t care about a one sided board wipe even though the same degeneracy died. It’s just weird mental things.
Everytime I wonder why a card costs so much, I think to myself "commander" and move on with life, usually not checking.
Yup. Graham's 1st pick is correct; nothing exciting here.
and this fire elemental isn't even hot (okay they are but like, you know)
I'll put it this way, the 2020 box I opened, not a double copy of any card. 2 boxes of 2021, and I've had multiple cards with more than 1 copy in the box
