This was great! So interesting. I would love how they got involved with these jobs. I am jealous :D I know it is not easy and not like the movies. I cant imagine it is any easy job. I can't imagine the stresses. I am so thankful for these women ....and men that hide in the background to keep us save in the US.
Don't be envious, go join the ranks. But its a thankless job in a giant bureaucracy filled with men, no glamor involved, a lot of tedious work, moments of great stress working with time pressures in a crisis situation at times, no outward praise, a lot of deception even to family members so they are not vulnerable themselves, etc. There is no movie glamor. Not the most rewarding job for a lot of us. Your personality must be happy with all these constraints.

Became friendly with a CIA worker while I was assigned to Panama. We did not talk about our work. I was an Army officer who spent a lot of time “down country”. Once while wearing my uniform in Venezuela a military group secretary and I were going to a meeting. We came upon a violent demonstration. First thing she does was to have me put on her pink sweater over my Army officers with ribbons uniform shirt. By that, we avoided getting caught-up in that protest.
Where is Panama? That lady was a quick thinker. She must have been used to living in crime-ridden towns where she understood the mindsets of criminals/terrorists who were pelted up with extreme hatred.

Polished, suave, charming, steely, intelligent, articulate, tight-lipped about secrets, patriotic, charming, feminine, tough, are some adjectives that come to mind. For any woman born before 1970, we know how hard it was to succeed in professions dominated by men. Either they were your mentor, or they harassed you, or held you down, or mocked you. To be respected by men enough to be promoted, showed that they were twice as accomplished as their male colleagues, and incredibly tough and had political savvy to rise within the ranks. Not to mention the service they rendered all US citizens with their dedication, creativity, and courage. My mother lived through WWII in Europe. She said to us as children, "The Americans saved us! When the US soldiers rolled through Belgium, the women and girls would fall on their necks, kissing them with joy for liberating them from the Nazis. The soldiers gave them chocolate which they had not seen for 5 yrs during the war. There was so much gratitude. My Belgian grandmother was living with her 3 kids (incl my mom) in a hilltop country house in Liege. My grandfather was jailed by the Germans at the time. The Nazis had taken over the house as it had a good vantage point. One day, the American soldiers rolled in so fast on their Jeeps that the Germans scrambled to get out fast. The Commandant told my grandmother, "We would have shot you all, but unfortunately, we do not have enough time!" and then drove away. Thanks to the US soldiers, my mother lived, and I too, was able to be born. All over Northern France, around the D day beaches, and towns in Belgium, there are plaques and monuments that are posted in town halls and churches and village squares thanking the American and British soldiers for their service to France and Belgium. Their service will never be forgotten. The work of these women in the CIA is invaluable and we are very lucky to have them. Thank you, Ladies for your service!
Holy cow I love this sort of stuff and I only just found a panel of women who carved out pathways in the field. This is gold!!!! And so so so touching. I wonder how much corruption went through their fingers though. Love that the CIA has lifted some of these amazing people to let us hear the stories. We love them, I hope we can gear about some of the cool cases that went on. Or the BEST cases that are infamous within the CIA. I don't even think it's bad to lift retired operatives and let them tell their stories within reason. I actually think it shows growth in the CIA. I just hope it's been drained if all the crooks and pedophiles.
Really enjoyed the discussion about losing agents in Aames' wake, because I read "Red Widow" by Alma Katsu and loved the scene where a female case officer lost an agent for the fist time. Katsu showed that being emotional in front of man at CIA works out just about as well as it does for the rest of us..........................

I don't know if it's a cultural thing or not. How to fix that. I would get special treatment, or I regressed to a childlike state, especially at one point. In addition to being called a whore, I didn't join the army to stay in the army. I did it so that I could go to school. I wasn't planning on having kids. in there, which meant that I didn't want to get married. Plus, I needed counseling on how to have a relationship because I was so degraded growing up in regards to sex and peers. Plus, my family isn't exactly a great model.

I'm sure there are men and women who work shifts in a convenience store who have had the same feeling and get minimum wage. That said, she does tell good stories.
Signs that a society might be f***ed up: convenience store workers having the same experience of danger as somebody who's working for an intelligence agency at a meeting with an internationally wanted terrorist.
A lot of us are trained to want to finish school, have a career, and then the government raises our kids in daycare. My mom actually apologized to me for this. She was like, I made a monster. I'm so happy she did. Currently, in a way to keep women in lower jobs, they use it as a chain to tie them to the system as single parents. Gotta love it. I'm not doing it. Many are waking up and simply not having children. Live at home.

Well, I had a problem with the number of males surrounding me. It was a problem since I was young without experience. Fuck with my head and try to sleep with me constantly. We pretty much have to get married, but they don't say that, and those relationships fail at times, too, when they are split up. The males wouldn't listen to me, and in one job, we all ended up in the office due to treatment. A lot of other females went crazy, too. I met some, don't get me wrong, strong ones who could do it, but there were more who had issues or just got pregnant and left. Babies R US. I think it would be okay if we could get more females in there. Other armies manage to be together with different rules.
Why is it women always talk about men ? I don't understand why men don't need to compare themselves with women but women always compare themselves to men. Just be yourself. God made you and you don't need to measure yourself against men
Women live in a world where men see a housekeeper, sexual object, and nursemaid. When men value women in all their complexities and quit treating them as objects (and abusing, controlling, devaluing them), then women can be themselves in their own right. They can attempt that now, but most men see what they want to see.
Can you imagine being in charge of an event and not telling your tech crew to have lighting on all the speakers? They are sitting in the dark!!! Then have two projection screens to either side, so audience can see the speakers’ faces and see the screens. Also, this moderator is why you book a professional like a local news anchor to serve as a moderator for a major event like this. Never make jokes at your speakers’ expense! Cringe. I think the title suggests that anyone's mother, daughter or sister could be a spy, like these women, and you wouldn't know. Notice they didn't include 'wife' -- I think bc many spouses do know their wife's employer, just not the details of their work. She was thanked for her work on "the Middle East Peace Process", so sorry Ian your request to join the CIA is declined. I worked with many women in this field and their work standards were indistinguishable from men. Both sexes have outstanding, good and mediocre analysts in equal measure, in my view.
The baby might be a good disguise for a woman, but for a man I would have to guess a homeless person. Just sit out on the sidewalk with a cup with some change shaking at people in scrubby/dirty and worn/torn clothes begging for money. You can't become more invisible.
But that's not a useful disguise. A woman carrying a baby can still do pretty much everything without breaking cover. A homeless man can't really leave his place on the sidewalk without instantly looking suspicious. And what espionage work can he do sitting on the sidewalk? Pretty much none, except send and receive short messages, which could more easily and safely be done using a dead drop.
People do really stupid things in the army at times due to stress. It's semi-entertaining. I don't think the punishments should be death. Go ruin our lives with bad chapters, not our minds.
In AIT, I was on the floor with crazies due to that. It's like, they're all batshit crazy. Can we put it into the contract to be prostitutes? At least say it. No offense, guys. How many sexual assault cases can we rack up?
Maybe we need more classes on family values. A lot of us are runaways or joined to escape our lives and had fractured home lives. We've been leadeth by Satan to the sacred, Hell dumpster, so we need a little redemption and education on how to live, not Breaking Benjamin. Not C, but my other roommate had a problem like that, too. She and her partner would talk about how they didn't want kids because of what happened to them. It was an obsession because they obviously wanted to have a family.
