Step by Step Let's Paint: Bookshelf in Loose Watercolors

- Today I’ll be painting a bookshelf as requested by PurpleEmu Studio! This is a bit different to what I usually post so I hope you guys still enjoy it. I haven’t painted in this loose style for so many years and I’ve somewhat forgotten about it, but I’m glad to be acquainted to the style again. Its very simple and loose, without worrying about clean lines, and it’s definitely one of those relaxing doodles to paint and maybe you can even do this using your own personal bookshelf at home as reference :D happy painting!

Holbein, DS (Quin red, Buff Titanium, Graphite Grey), WN Manganese Blue
Brush: Vtec size 2, WN Sceptre Gold II size 0
Paper: Canson Montval
Pen: Next (brown Pen), Snowman Drawing pen 0.05, White Gelly Roll
Pencil: Pentel Sharplet
Eraser: Sakura

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

The lovely thing about this painting is that it is easily changed up for those who want a certain color range or reflection of their own items in their own homes. Thanks for the inspiration. Looks like fun!

i LOVE how you use more affordable paper like canson to create amazing paintings! I was thinking of giving up on watercolour because every youtuber paints on arches or something super expensive. Its so encouraging to see that beautiful art can be created even with 'cheap' material.
Do you know how difficult it is to come up with new lines to describe your beautiful paintings everytime you paint one??

Yea I like to change it up from time to time. Personally I don't think I'd be able to think of these up without people suggesting subjects that I'm not used to painting :D

Thank you for a fun and imminently follow-able tutorial. (I do use the pause function a lot.) I've painted this twice now. Once doing the full bookshelf, and again using half of it, and changing the tea kettle for a tea pot. The smaller version was on a notecard for "thank you" to a teacher whose personal library is astounding, so this was perfect for her, too.
Haha that's what I would recommend though (pause in between). Hope your teacher appreciated your sweet effort ^_^

Your tutorials are fantastic, I loved art at school and college and it was my best subject. I've been watching lots of tutorials and videos on UA-cam, I'm rediscovering my love of creating art. Your tutorials really helping me, I haven't done any painting for a long long time. I think the last time I actually used paint, was back in my college days when I was studying fashion design, pattern cutting and dressmaking/tailoring and that's a good few years ago now! I'm old!!

I love this so much. Listening to you explain each decision as you are going along is so helpful. I realize that I am probably stopping too soon in my drawings/paintings and missing the little details that make the whole thing come alive. I'll have to start working on that. Thank you
No worries! I've seen this go both ways where people finish too early and not build enough layers even though they're off to a good start, for me personally, I tend to always overwork my paintings hahaha xD So glad this helped! All the best for your paintings!
