Solar Eclipse Friction Fire with Yucca Transport (4.08.2024)

- Solar Eclipse is an excellent time to connect with nature during such an amazing natural phenomenon. Today, as the eclipse was maximizing, I produced an ember by friction fire using the hand drill method with a mule fat spindle on parry nolina stalk. A piece of a dry yucca leaf was used to catch the ember. Pounded palm fiber was used as the tinder bundle. After blowing the ember into flames I used the dry piece of a chaparral yucca stalk to light like a torch. The inside of the yucca stalk is soft like punk wood and will smolder for a long time thus allowing one to conveniently transport fire to another location. A row of holes must be made into the stalk so that air flow will keep the material burning inside. To make a new fire the inside of the burning yucca stalk can be scraped to loosen the hot coals and then added to a new tinder bundle and then ignited. Rufo enjoyed being my companion on this little adventure. Always be very careful with fire and only practice these skills in a safe environment.

I had the amazing opportunity to see it in totality on Indigenous land beside an ancient stone wall and a running creek. Seeing it in nature was worth the over full day drive.

I was in Dallas and got to see the complete solar eclipse! It was awesome!
Oh yeah! That must have been exciting. Were there large crowds of people gathered outside? Did the city practically shut down?
We had a partial eclipse. It was neat to see the dimness and the colors diminishing as it happened! Cool video, liked the metaphoric illusion of the yucca transport to the sun!
Yeah, just a partial eclipse here too. The landscape darkened a little and the wind cooled. It was a beautiful experience.
Survival skills like these we will need for times like these days. I love your channel, it inspires others to get outdoors and get with nature and learn useful skills when you dont have much.

@ChadZuberAdventures Is there any way I can get people here at my group home to learn about bushcraft with convincing (New Housing Ohio) NHO to teach others fire starting and using sharp tools? Cause it seems like over here they are finicky about wanting us to use dangerous items
That May be difficult because in todays modern world people rarely use fire and they don’t understand fire so it is a little frightening to them.

Very artistic and spiritual, a beautiful image, offering fire for the sun so that it retains it's vigor to shine again, or taking the essence of the sun before its eclipsed to return it back again so that the sun continues to shine strong. Beautiful ceremony!

Yeah, it was only partial where I was but the landscape got a little darker and the air temperature noticeably dropped too.

How long did it take from first spin to flame? Although I realize the prep probably takes much longer than the actual fire?
Yes, prep takes much longer. Once everything is ready it takes me about two minutes to get an ember.
I thought about using a magnifier, but it was way too cloudy.
That's a fun technique to use too.

Yeah, keep the fuel off of the pottery with protective pottery shards or on a grill above the fuel.

Please tell me you didn’t look at it with naked eyes Chad. Hopefully there were plenty of warnings not to.
Actually I've looked at the sun with naked eyes many times. In this case I was looking at it only through the lens of the camera.
@@ChadZuberAdventures that’s a relief to hear. 🌞 although I think looking at an eclipse through a camera lens is also not advisable. We had an eclipse near where I live in 1974 and we had to observe the moon’s journey across the Sun and the resulting shape changes by making pinholes in cardboard.
@@karamia1392 Yeah, I'm aware of that technique too. I was working during the entire eclipse. Setting up camera shots, etc. Not for a single moment did I just sit and observe. But Rufo did. He was so at peace up there on the boulders. He didn't want to leave.

Unfortunately it was only a partial eclipse here and the sun was very high in the sky. I didn’t have my super wide angle lens. It would have looked normal anyway because it wasn’t even close to full eclipse.
