Thank you, you are sooooooooooooo cool in my book for doing this. I really appreciate it and I'm sure so many other people do too. You just taught a guy who knows nothing about piano how to play a beautiful song (that I've listened too for about 12 years!) Thanks again friend.
Dude, this helps a lot. Most songs' sheet music is behind a pay wall so I have to revert to UA-cam. This is one of the first tutorial videos I've seen that puts the keys on the screen and it helps tremendously.
i got a keyboard yesterday after many years of wanting one , and thanks to you this will be the first decent song i will know how to play! thanks for taking the time to make this
Ah, thank you so much for putting this up here! I've always wanted to learn this, but I could never find the sheet music for it. Thanks for the help! :D
Dude, awesome job. I love this song and I cant read music so this helped me so much. Ive been playing the guitar for 15 years and I picked up the piano quite fast but its only because of tutorials done in this fashion that make it so easy to learn. Again, kudos!
I don't mean to sound big headed, but I've been told that I'm a perfectionist and I've never played my keyboard for anything other than playing silly things that I try figure out, but I was dying to be able to play this song well and you let me achieve that. I knew no chords or note names before these videos, and now I can play my favourite song! thank you
@@Doncarnage001 I remember playing this song in college during a break (studying sound engineering) and a music teacher (who was notoriously portentous) popped his head in the room with a look that said 'damn that's pretty good', looked at me and said "nice!" then left. So yeah it went well! I can still play it today, but don't practice.
Thanks a ton for posting this. I just started learning piano about two weeks ago ad I really love this song. I'm happy to know I can play the song (at least everything explained in the video) and now im gonna go watch the others. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the video :) I've just started playing the piano (learning on my own) and this helped tremendously. Ignore the critics, you're doing a great job!
I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to people who are trying to learn the correct version, with the D# minor. Otherwise, I actually learned something from it. Thankyou for posting.
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is basically just information that is sent to your computer depending on what key you press or various other controllers that are assignable to different objects in a sampler. This information triggers samples, which are recordings of actual instruments. So someone recorded each note on a piano, then in a sampler you can line up the files so that when the right key is pressed on the MIDI controller it triggers the right sample for playback
meurer06 is correct, the second chord is wrong. the notes that should be played are E-flat, G-flat, and B-flat ( also referred to by the video as D#,F#, and A#) he did a great job teaching the video, but for those who read music, the song is in the key of D-flat, which has 5 flats. So, those notes that he calls sharps are actually flats when you refer back to the sheet music and the song's key signature.
Thank you for this tutorial. Very helpful. Though yes, as others have said, the second chord is definitely a D#m. I also checked this in my Melloncollie guitar tab book and it's listed as Em but down half a step (i.e. D#m).
@shortys513 Mmm I would agree with the original poster; it's the difference between a two chord progression and a three chord progression, go for the latter, it provides a more substantial sense of harmonic motion, and is more accurate
@bifflarken Arg, I mean a half step, and that's how it's written in the book. Technically, you have the notes right, but learning to start on D allows for a MUCH easier learning experience.
It's called a MIDI file. I would recommend doing a search for "Annie Dog MIDI file." Since MIDI files are all programmed by actual people, you will rarely find semi-popular songs. With a song like Annie Dog, I think you could look up the guitar tab or something and translate that to piano chords.
I have an M-Audio Axiom 49 MIDI keyboard. Unless you have a computer application that supports MIDI and have some good samples, I would suggest getting a keyboard with built in samples. Something with a sustain pedal. I got my first keyboard at Radio Shack. It made sound and I learned how to make chords.
I not sure I understand the whole MIDI concept, could you briefly explain it, or link me to somewhere I can learn? What about keyboards that have the keys light up, what is your opinion on those? Appreciate your help.
Thank you very much for going through this. ...I have always wanted to learn it... Went ahead recorded a rough take, which can be viewed here. Also gave you credit for your tutorial (see my videos), where credit is due..
i'ts an old video, but i'm about to buy this keyboard and i want to know : does 49 keys are not too limited for playing songs? i want to learn piano and i don't know if it's a good one for a beginning.
oh no i'm lost lol! i found quite a different version of the sheet n the internet you're great though! i'm still learning the whole song hope to play it that good!
wow great job im a self taught guitarist who's messin around with a keyboard at the moment would love to learn this song ill have to dload the tab or move my keyboard closer to the computer lol also ive seen billy play a simple version of this from ages ago so is this billy's or is this from there keybord player they had that died from the heroin overdose in 96 caus like i say billy's version was not as defined as the album version which u r playin
well done. very good. wierd tho..i bought the sheet music and everything is written down a semitone lower. so ive been learning it out of key...still sounds ok tho...
I'm pretty sure you don't have to talk to me in second person. And I think either one works pretty well, I like the F# major myself because it keeps the C# in the equation.
@shortys513 In this case please don't call it "How to play", because it is just your interpretation, not the original. Actually, the second chord sounds rahter joyful than sad (like the original song). And the 2nd and 3rd chord change disappears if you play this way. No offense.
So, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to be cocky, I just want to guage my skill level with piano. I'm a drummer/guitarist trying to learn, and I want to know if I should bother with piano. So this with this 10 minute tutorial, and pausing, I picked up this in about 15-20 minutes flawlessly, and I just want an honest opinion on whether that's good for a beginner or if that's just average because it's an easy song.
Actually, I believe this is in D, but tuned down a whole step. I only say this because I have the tab book for entire album, and that's how I learned it.
Couple things wrong. This tutorial helps though, but the errors are pretty bad. Just learn this while listening to the real song, and you will get it right.
First person: I Second person: You Third person: He So yeah, it was a little bit rude of UA-cam user '31128' to talk about you as if you weren't here, but he was talking in third person. Sorry. It was bugging me.
Hey, the second chord is wrong and even you like it, please don't teach wrong chords to the others. People search for these tutorial videos to learn the original version, and the title of your video is "How to play...".
Hey. Brilliant tutorial. I learned this from you 10 years ago and the video still holds up better tan anything else out there
Thank you, you are sooooooooooooo cool in my book for doing this. I really appreciate it and I'm sure so many other people do too. You just taught a guy who knows nothing about piano how to play a beautiful song (that I've listened too for about 12 years!) Thanks again friend.
i am recently learning piano and this is one of the first songs i want to play, thank you so much for the music

You teach like I learn. Thanks.
And your finger work is smooth, impressed.
dude! thanks a bunch - i've been looking for a "how to" for this song. Glad you put a great tutorial up!
i got a keyboard yesterday after many years of wanting one , and thanks to you this will be the first decent song i will know how to play! thanks for taking the time to make this

thank you soo much. Ive literaly been looking for something like this for 4 years now!!

Gold - have never played the piano before, but i have learnt a fair chunk of the song. Thanks heaps.
I don't mean to sound big headed, but I've been told that I'm a perfectionist and I've never played my keyboard for anything other than playing silly things that I try figure out, but I was dying to be able to play this song well and you let me achieve that. How did it go ?
@@Doncarnage001 I remember playing this song in college during a break (studying sound engineering) and a music teacher (who was notoriously portentous) popped his head in the room with a look that said 'damn that's pretty good', looked at me and said "nice!" then left. Nice video. I'm a piano beginner, and this helped me play. I finished part 1 and now i'm starting part 2. Thanks!
thanks man, i love that song. i have played guitar for almost twebty years and just started to play piano. this really helped.

there is never a "wrong" way to play a song, there is only different ways and that's what makes a song better by playing it in deferent versions
dude thanks you just taught me how to read music
oh my goodness thank you. this song means so much to me! very helpful video😍😍
Perfect. Thanks dude.
thank ya luv. can't boast about nailing it just yet… ugh need more hand time
Awesome video :) Could you tell me what kind of keyboard you have? or what kind of keyboard I should purchase? Especially for a beginner like myself.
I'm pretty sure he didn't get the second chord right... I think its supposed to be a #D minor.
I learned this song from some sheet music I found on the internet back in 1998, but I play it in a different key.
you are the best, thanks a lot.
thank you so much for doing this. It helped a lot.
I appreciate this
hey thanx a lot dude this video helped heaps
Thanx so much, so cool!
@shortys513 Mmm I would agree with the original poster; it's the difference between a two chord progression and a three chord progression, go for the latter, it provides a more substantial sense of harmonic motion, and is more accurate
@shortys513 yeah the second chord is minor.
Quick correction everyone, at 2:20 the notes in the left hand should be D# F# A#. In other words the pinky note should be the next black key up.
@bifflarken Arg, I mean a half step, and that's how it's written in the book. Technically, you have the notes right, but learning to start on D allows for a MUCH easier learning experience.

thanks for returning the favor bro
god i love how to vids cos i cant read sheet music either haha
Thanks man
@31128
yeah, I think the highest note is supposed to be an A, but this one isn't right.
@shortys513 dude, i love your voice. it's kind of amazing.
It looks so easy when you play it man
I not sure I understand the whole MIDI concept, could you briefly explain it, or link me to somewhere I can learn? What about keyboards that have the keys light up, what is your opinion on those?

hope to play it that good!
@Ois616 lots of stuff does midi. you need a midi keyboard though. you could try logic
I dont think so, I think that technically it is in Db not C# but Im a guitar player so I think mostly in sharps.
wow great job im a self taught guitarist who's messin around with a keyboard at the moment would love to learn this song ill have to dload the tab or move my keyboard closer to the computer lol also ive seen billy play a simple version of this from ages ago so is this billy's or is this from there keybord player they had that died from the heroin overdose in 96 caus like i say billy's version was not as defined as the album version which u r playin
im like u m8 and i nt 2 gd with musci but cn play teh piano good on you 4 doiung this and keep playing=) ty 5*
To all the whingers. He is showing you what he copied from a MIDI file, as he said. Great job too.
Bright Eyes?! Is that you?!
where can i get the midi program you mentioned
no, i would like to take requests but i cant play very many songs on piano
So which is it? D# or C#? I think C# sounds good, but I am not sure.
well done. very good. wierd tho..i bought the sheet music and everything is written down a semitone lower. so ive been learning it out of key...still sounds ok tho...
The opening chord is correct (C#), but the second chord is wrong. It should be D# minor.
So it's C#, D#m, F#
I'm pretty sure you don't have to talk to me in second person. And I think either one works pretty well, I like the F# major myself because it keeps the C# in the equation.
Can I have the link for that MIDI file?
@thepickleaffliction ahahaha so true :)
@shortys513 That's called third person.
Haha, Is that Conor Oberst narrating?
Btw, I'm using the video to learn the song, so you rule.
You do sound like Bright Eyes though!
It's "in third person" boy. And definitely the chord is D#m.
@shortys513
In this case please don't call it "How to play", because it is just your interpretation, not the original. Actually, the second chord sounds rahter joyful than sad (like the original song). And the 2nd and 3rd chord change disappears if you play this way. No offense.

Would it not be much easier to play it in the key of C?
Well yeah, but only ever learning to play in C would be like only ever driving in 1st gear.
dude you sound kind of like James Iha lol
Couple things wrong. This tutorial helps though, but the errors are pretty bad. Just learn this while listening to the real song, and you will get it right.
