Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara stopped by the Rolling Stone studio recently to play a few songs from their new concert album Get Along. After the set, the twin rockers chatted with us about how they nearly left their hit "Walking With A Ghost" off their album So Jealous and their blog post from earlier this year which called out Odd Future for their misogynistic and homophobic lyrics.
Absolutely right, Sara. Never even heard of Tyler, but his moronic response to an intelligent and insightful letter sums it up pretty well.
I do agree with them. Tyler's songs would still be great! And he would still have hundreds of fans, if he didn't always mention hurtful topics.
You both have been so important for exactly what you said in this interview. Your not only amazing musicians and people-you have a voice and have been so impactful on my life and so many others especially the LQBTQ community...so a very big thank you from a long time fan. The business for art is the record I’m listening to right now. I love all your records in a very different way! Two of my favorite Canadians!

even tho thier twins, how different thier personalities are really show in this interview i find. tegan and sara are both creative, smart and obviously passionate but in seperate ways.
tegan sounds kinda "hippie-ish" like a bit more care free and dosnt take herself too seriously while sara has a more strong willed, loud kinda way of making her point. love these girls

I admire the clarity, conviction, and frankness Sara speaks with when discussing serious and meaningful issues. She speaks her mind very eloquently, that is always something I strive for. Also, I obviously wish her good health, but I can't help but love the raspy voice going on.

sara raises a good point too, i've never thought about that before. definitely doesn't make sense that you can get fined for saying things if you're an athlete but it's shrugged off if you're a musician.

Sara is awesome for putting her opinion out there. Like Tegan said, "just think about it". They're not exactly screaming for revenge or justice, Sara was just putting her opinion (which on the whole I agree with btw) into the public eye because she felt like it wasn't being represented.
And for the people who say "if you don't like it, don't listen to it", it's getting kinda hard to be involved in music without some artist similar to this blasting into your ears. Just saying.
Really they wrote so many songs they play like...once at a concert and never again because it didn't make the record for whatever reason..and these songs are amazing too. I think we should get everything these talented goddesses do :D

@TheAssassinAce As a quick add on to that, it's like when people thought Phil Collins' song In The Air Tonight was about something completely different than what he said it was about in interviews because people won't actually go to the source for meaning.

How can anyone see anything wrong with what Sara is saying? She expressed her opinion calmly and rationally and never said that Tyler should be censored or that he has no right to say what he does. She explicitly says he is free to say what he wants, but that she thinks her view should also be given attention and consideration. Some people get hysterical over anything...

And Sara enforced pretty well the actual idea and point of that letter. Sara you should never feel bad about posting that letter, even if it got more bad reactions then good, witch i'm pretty sure it didn't :)
And they are both so hot and all that good stuff . Sara is killing me, still; just had to throw that in there.

I think most ppl that get hate of and view them in a negative light are ppl that r too uptight and take them way too seriously. They need to understand that 9/10 times of isnt being serious. they justin joking around and having fun. Ppl shouldnt take most of what they say to heart.

@PiercingKnight im not trying to start anything at all, i didnt put homophobia and racism together intentionally i was just showing different examples of stupid fights people fight about. I totally agree with you that we are free to say what we want and believe whatever we want what im saying is we shouldnt fight about it just be peaceful and happy even though there will never be world peace i know that If thats part of your religion then i respect that but i have the freedom to say what i want
I'm a fan of Tyler the Creator's music, but at the same time, I do 100% agree with what Sara said. I think that Tyler is entirely justified in writing his music. He's just making music that he believes in, but I think that it's important for people to know that, while it's okay for him to make the music, it's not okay for people to take it seriously.
Lol not is it only an actual pic of Tegan, but just because they're not all over everywhere and we like their music doesn't make us hipsters.
So if I were to buy 50000 copies of Superstar a week before a show....

i saw a flyer and tegan and sara is gonna open for the black keys in tempe at the marquee which baffled me! i found that to be completely stupid. it should be the other way around..
i want a girl that looks like them because they are classic beauty.in another life i will try to find them one day.
Funny you say that since most people can't tell them apart seeing as they are identical twins. The lady on the left is Tegan and she did in fact have a labret piercing at one point. Sara's the one on the right.

I agree with Sara 100%. It is disgusting that people make idols of people like tyler the creator and brush aside what they are actually saying. It really is just a bunch of homophobic and sexist comments strung together between a heap of swear words.. They don't get in trouble? And people enjoy listening to it? What a strange world we live in. :/

All im here for is to enjoy Tegan and Sara and their music Im just saying its disrespectful to bash on somebody because of their sexuality, and then nobody can stick up for themselves about it I support gay people all the way. i care about music. If your not here for tegan and saras music then just stop arguing. I respect what you are saying but im here for them and their music only.
Being a feminist doesn't mean you hate men. I'm the prime example of that. It just means you believe in the empowerment and equality of women and all genders.

@TheAssassinAce No, is not like that. Have you not payed attention to the interview at least? The actual point is not even about Odd Future or Tyler, he is just used as a (obvious) example, part cos he is probably the one getting the most media attention . And who said they are homophobic? Sara's post named 'Call for a change' was more like her reaction to the fact that homophobic and sexist slurs and themes in music are seemingly getting more and more accepted and tolerated by the media.
So basically, everyone deserves the right to say whatever they want to say, but just because you can, doesn't mean that you should.
@GabGabGabberz No it didn't seem confrontational at all :) and I totally respect your opinion. I probably just hold such strong opinions against nazi-ism because I have lost countless polish relatives to the massacres; and you are right, jews weren't the only ones targeted by nazi's, but they were the ones killed by the millions. I just feel like it is a bit more of a serious topic because their has never been a movement of this degree against gays or women (not to make light of those matter).
It's not a problem. I just noticed it in the background. To get back on the subject, the lady on the right looks better than the lady on the left. Sorry for not knowing their names, I listen to their music. Current favorite "I bet it stung" and anyway, girl on left looks like one of those skater guys, with their long hair covering one of their eyes and tilted neck to protrude the chin. She's only missing a lip wring.

I respect tegan and saras opinions of OF and with them being active members in the gay community(i think) i dont blame them for their reaction to of and their lyrics bit they and the rest of the ppl that dislike of definitely need to get educated in them cuz theyre not what they think they are

In order to like OF you need to learn not to take every they say too seriously. Theyre young reckless kids that say whats on their minds and dgaf just suck it and take it with a grand of salt. Ok I understand their point of view. But honestly I think it was that OF and Tyler the Creator getting popular that caused her to speak about em, if people did some research sometimes they'd realize that Tyler's antics and lyrics weren't anything new, first off their's whole genres of rap and rock that talk about misogyny and gore and rape (horrorcore, death metal) so if you speak out against you should speak against all not just call out Odd Future cause Tyler won a vma.

I praise tegan for writing such a powerful letter :) although I slightly disagree with her first point about the seriousness of the matter. I feel like anti-semitism is a more serious problem than misogynism or homophobism. Simply because of how horrible the holocaust was and how scary it is that some would still hold nazi beliefs. Don't get me wrong though, homophobics and misogynists are terrible little people.

No one should be fined by any organization for anything. First Amendment rights include the ability to be offensive. If people want to fight ignorant, idiotic hate speech (redundant) then they should just not listen to the speaker. Freedom of expression is not limited to what's inoffensive. The free expression of ideas includes horrible things and people should be free to say them. But the rest of us should be free to not listen or reward that kind of behavior.
If you're offended about something then you're offended. I don't think it matters how many gay fans or friends the person has, it's still offensive. No music is being banned over it, I think Sara is just saying think about what you're saying as it might hurt someone.
If by "a democracy like we do" you mean "a democracy that is flawed in the same way", then yes, you are correct. Canada has a parliamentary democracy, and I hope you don't have any illusions that our American government somehow protects freedom of expression more than theirs does; that part of their constitution is very close to ours. I don't wanna spark a political debate but Americans should be knowledgeable and proud. Not ignorant and proud like the rest of the world perceives us.
