Looks great Trevor. I am looking forward to getting the Star Adventurer Gti and have one on order with Bintel in Sydney where I live.
I have a couple of portable rigs as I am a pilot who travels frequently. The little one is an AZ-Gte in EQ mode with a 50ED refractor / ZWO 485. That works great and set up is five minutes. It is the one I use when moving frequently.
In Perth Australia I have another set up I store in our hangar as we spend a lot of time in Perth. It is the 72ED / ZWO 183 Pro on an Ioptron Smart EQ Pro Plus. I take that one if away for two weeks or more.
Sometime I set it up at the airport and the plane is my astro shack. Lots of snacks readily available.
    Love all your videos.

@Astrobackyard - couple places you didn't mask your GPS co-ords (when showing telescope control screen)
And yeah. Plate solving saves a ton of time. When doing plate solve to get scope position, you want to be doing it closer to the celestial equator than to the pole. My new rig (powered by APT) started complaining to me about that one time!

I started my AstroPhotography journey last fall with a star tracker, digital camera, and telephoto zoom lens. Polar alignment and subsequently finding my targets have certainly proven to be challenging ... BUT ... I like that I'm learning the night sky through the process of star hopping. Even though it's been time-consuming to do it this way, it has given me FAR more satisfaction (as a beginner) than if I had used technology to do everything for me. I definitely plan to "upgrade" down the road to a setup like this one, but not until that "I actually did that!" satisfaction wears off.

This setup is almost $8000 which is out of my budget range for my 1st telescope. Also I cannot find any planetary imaging with this setup. (Edit: after reading some more, this cant take planetary or galaxy photos due to small 61 mm apeture. Its mainly used to take pictures of nebulas)
For my first scope, I want a motorized scope with green laser pointer so I can learn the night sky. I am thinking of purchasing this setup with only the 50mm guide scope, zwo 120mm mini, airplus wifi and green laser attached to the guide scope. No telescope/zwo 2600mm pro/filter. This will reduce overall cost to $2000. In future, I can purchase a telescope when I am ready for astrophotography.
Is there a better way to set up a motorized mount with wifi go-to functions and attach a green laser pointer to it? Can the 50mm guide scope attach directly to mount? Can the Airplus plate solve with only the 50mm guide scope?
Only other good options I see are also expensive (with motorized auto-align, go-to feature, wifi):
    Stelinna 3.1 inch $4000
Nexstar Evolution 8 inch HD with starsense $3000 (use to be $2400)
    Vespera 2 inch $1500
I think Celestron 8 inch w/ starsense is the best option but due to pandemic they are out of stock. Also charging $600 more than when it was released 6 years ago. Maybe I will just wait until they release a new version.

Not for big reflectors or Cassegrains if you want to do Planets,, though... But for your setup with no telescope, it can be used easy! I got the magic cable (RJ something or other) this past November. WOW! It makes life so much better in combination with my ASIair, HEQ5 Pro mount, and iPad. Plate solving for polar alignment not only makes alignment possible when an object is blocking the view of Polaris, but it also eliminates awkwardness of viewing polaris through the polar scope, making mount adjustments, all while trying not to bump the tripod. Now I can set the tripod height based upon obtaining the best stability for the telescope and camera, and not whether I can bend my neck to peep through the polar scope. As you point out, ZWO has done a great job with their software to get the telesope on target. I've gone from typically needing about 30 minutes of set up time to start photographing to 10 minutes.

Looking at this, I love my EQ-G, but it's killing my portability. That Star Adventurer GTi looks so much more appealing for setup and weight. Giving serious thought to downsizing mount and upgrading guidescope as my next step.

Excellent! Welcome to plate-solving! I typically refer to it as, "the Black Magic of computer-driven astronomy." You may want to consider WiFi instead of the USB cable for mount control. WiFi has terrible range, but can manage the foot or two from the computer to the mount. One less cable.

Great video. Thank you for the wrap up. I have been using the ASIair Pro and it’s plate solving capability for almost two years now. My portable set-up is an 102mm/F7 Orion ED refractor with an ASI294MC on an iOptron AZM Pro mount. No guiding for 30s subs. No problem. It worked excellently even in conjunction with SkySafari 6. I was missing the camera framing and rotation.
Now I used the SkyAtlas feature last night for the very first time. Sooooo convenient :-) The Sky Atlas interface and map is something to get used to, though. Not very detailed and not as easy to read as SkySafari and similar planetarium programs. You need to basically know what you are looking for in the ASIair Sky Atlas. But it adds so much more convenience, especially for image framing and camera rotation. Cannot got much easier and portable than that… so true

Hi Trevor, loved the video and your infectious enthusiasm for all things Astro. The ASI Plus is in such short supply in the UK that I decided to take a punt & bought a
s/h ASI Air Pro at a great price from a UK astronomy selling site. This along with a cheap Wi-Fi extender has completely transformed my astrophotography experience at a time when I was becoming frustrated with how long it was taking to get set up & capturing images. I can now set up my HEQ5 pro polar align & be shooting in less than 15 minutes rather than the long winded manual PA & less than accurate multi star alignment routine. More of my time under elusive clear skies is spent obtaining data on targets which I have struggled to acquire in the past. I know detractors gripe about the ASI Air’s lack of support for third party Astro cameras but I’m still using a supported DSLR and having a great experience nonetheless. A cooled camera is still a long way off for me but I’m having so much enjoyment with this set up that It can wait a little longer. Keep up the great work & I can’t wait to see what comes from your new dark sky location😀🌙🔭

I'm choosing between ZWO Seestar S50 and Star Adventurer GTI Go To, and I don't know what to choose anymore. I'm a beginner, I only have a Canon EOS, lenses that are not very suitable for astrophotography and a weak tripod, the problem is that I don't have time to spend the whole night outside fighting with the wind and focusing tests and I don't want cables to connect to setup. So, I'm interested in go to functions and the possibility of shooting via wifi with the possibility of seeing the photo on the tablet or smartphone. star adventurer gti seems like a right choice here, but if you also have to buy an apo refractor, asi and asiair camera I'm going out of budget :( So I'm considering zwo seestar s50 for fast photos, but unfortunately this one only has 10 seconds of shutter speed. There's the possibility of using star adv gti go to with a canon eos and lens without asiair and controlling shots from the tablet or smartphone without this asiair?

You should try the little ZWO 30mm f4 guide scopes for more portability. I easily guide my rig down to sub 0.5” with it.

I never understood your aversion to plate solving. Even when you're switching gear, you can set up profiles in your AP software. How does doing a 3 star alignment not waste more time than loading a profile with your focal length?

Absolutely loving your videos. They are so inspiring. I have a question, I have a Canon RF 600 F4, paired with the R5. Can I use the skywatcher star adventure with that set up?

Always excellent videos, thanks!!! I have one important question about the cable connecting the ASIAIR to the mount. Can I use the "EQ mod mount" setting and use an EQ mod cable (like on the S-W EQ6R Pro) to control the GTI OR do you recommend the "Skywatcher AZ-GTi Synscan WiFi" setting and if so, what kind of cable do you recommend from GTi to ASIAIR Plus?

Interesting mount selection in the ASIAir. Others noted to use the EQMod Mount option, which is what i used with my SA GTI, but my Goto misses...badly, and doesn't want to plate solve. :(😢

Spectacular image Trevor. I am waiting patiently to get my 2600 MC Pro back from the shop so I can throw it on my WO Zenithstar 61 and capture the same image. And yes, ASI Air and it’s plate solving abilities are amazing. Great to use just one piece of software for focusing, polar alignment (even without needing to see Polaris), plate solving and image sequencing. Boy, I got into this hobby at just the right time!! What did you use to mount the Asiair to the tripod legs. I’m looking for the same setup.
Great video but never showed a polar alignment with it. Still trying to learn this new system since I just started astrophotography since I’ve been visual observing for two years.

Can this all be done with a mirrorless camera and a 600mm lens instead of a dedicated astro camera and a telescope?

  • @dmintz88

Awesome video, Trevor! I use the exact same configuration with my setup, only it's using an HEQ5 instead of the GTI. I select "EQMod Mount" and Baud 9600. I have the GTI on pre-order and was expecting I would use the same mount settings since I would be using the same "EQ Mod" cable. Did you try the "EQMod Mount" option and find that "SkyWatcher AZ-GTi/SynScan WiFi" was the only mount selection that worked?

How well did it guide Trevor? A lot of folk use the AZGti in EQ mode but it has its limitations. This looks like an obvious upgrade while staying portable but it needs to be worth the cost. Would be interested to hear your early bird thoughts!

A simple question: What samsung galaxy tablet model are you using? The reason I ask is because some of them have very bright front lights which light up every time you touch the screen - which is VERY BAD for night eye adaptation!! Sincere thanks!

So I have this mount, cable, red cat 71 sitting in the rig and a ASIAIR plus. Do you have to do any sort of alignment or tell the mount or asi what hemisphere you’re in?
Only reason I ask is because for one I’m new to all of this and two when I connected to the wifi and was browsing the settings I saw coordinates already put in there for the Longitude and latitude. When I chose the andromeda Galaxy to target it went the complete opposite way of what my skyview app said where andromeda was. I didn’t have a lot of time to play with the settings and such. Only had about 10 minutes of clear skies before clouds rolled in. Will do some more testing this weekend. Any input about this would be greatly appreciated. Take care everyone!

Love this video and it gives me a good guideline for setting up my own rig which I am about to at the moment. just curious to know: because the asi2400 is too expensive for me i can also do the same with a dslm or astro modified dslr right? and also telescope and guidescope are changeble right? so the key components of this rig is the star adventurer gti and the asiair plus - everything other is more or less free to change especially because of the budget. great video and love your work. cheers from Austria

can't wait for my SA GTI to arrive :) Looking forward to finally having a night and light travel setup!
On the other end, I'm going to upgrade my EQ6-R to a 10u GM1000 HPS so these small and light setups are a great alternative when you just can't be bothered to setup.
btw, how have you connected the ASI Air to the tripod?
