Exactly, this how they made reflection back in time... To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed with the video... but at least it explains how to get to it
Could it be possible that this was made on purpose? The entire game is a simulation and this part or level (called even "ghost of the past") is a backlot we're renas memories of dision were stored? The games brakes the fourth wall in its final ending when nemo is purged and you see the deleted files from its very own game directory. So this could be made on purpose.
That sounds like a really good theory, but in a technical level, like the comments says the inverted canyon it's a reflection, Is the same technique that half life 2 uses in their maps to project large structures, I don't know the specifics but looks similar. however, I think that there's is little bit of mystery around this level, but yeah, it's probably a development mistake or maybe something else 😉
where can we find this game to play nowadays? currently already played Ace Combat Zero, Ace Combat 5, Ace Combat 7. I've played Ace Combat 3 International Version as a kid long ago and just discovered about the Japanese version!
if i had ps1 i will be stucked on this! but...i have ACE7 it´s good i like it but not love AC3 is still in my heart and if i find how to smoothly emulate it i will go back to it. If i can keep only game for the rest of my existence AC3 will win
This i just for reflections. If you go to the southwest of the same map, you will find the terrain that is used when you fail the mission. In the southwest of the Tunnel Vision map, you will find the terrain used for the mission intro (where the X-49 and player enters the tunnel). And in the Geofront missions, you can find the cutscene geometry on the north of the map. You can use a game shark for these.
Ace Combat 3 is my favorite! Good childhood memories with the crappy single cd version. Now i'm playing the Japanese 2 cd version translated to english!
Same here. I'm looking forward to finally putting my SCPH-1110 analog joystick to use experiencing the English translation of all that the Japanese release had to offer (but was kept from the rest of the world 😕😒😑 ) .... as soon as I get the PSIO+its switchboard installed in my NTSC-U/C PS1 and solder in the mod-chip for region-free play. A long time coming. That controller and tactile transducers/bass shakers + subwoofer amp really get the immersion deep while in the ~ 1st -person view, music turned down/off.

probably the same canion, but upwards, for the "ray tracing" reflections effect that this mission had in the water, reflecting not only the canyons, but the airplanes and explosions, genius, RT real time reflections in a PS1 hardware 🥰
I think this is some old game dev trick here cause the game is pretty old it's likely what they used to do the reflection in the water during the mission cause this was long before we had reflection mapping on stuff
programming basics 101: first rule, when you delete some code, you risk to bug out a cascade of other things, so its best to leave it where it is, even if unused. In this case edit the map may be problematic, so they kept the (i assume) early version in it.
i'm playing AC3 again right now after 20 years and found your video, your text alone is filled with expression.. the last minute when we meet familiar face, idk why i feel relieve after being alone in a mysterious weird maze.
This is crazy. I was thinking about this mission lately, I remember being my favorite due to the canyon and how reflective the water was. AC3 is what introduced me to the series and I wish project aces can do a proper remaster with English dubs.
nice out of bounds discovery! Edit: developers leave all kinds of map and stuff behind after the game is finished. Probably this area is a unused version or just used for reflections as DragonsSpikeXIII mentioned
Good find, those are used to poject the canyon level reflection from the water's perspective. The player and NPC planed are reflected dynamically, but the level's must be static. Technically, they could have been directly below, but dying could have allowed the camera to clip and show the fake reflections underneath. By having it drawn off screen and projected from the canyon river. Excellent choice by the developers, they would have rather drawn the canyon reflection without clipping rather than risking ruining immersion. Old skyboxes and facades also used to be drawn like this; having a miniaturised version of the facades in a level and project it to the player with more scale. Check out Source engine games in a hammer editor and you'll see this facade projection trick used often.
Thanks for your video and work. Nice to see a video on AC3. My first AC game and i played a lot on it. It was so impressive for 1999/2000 on ps1. It's also nice to see new thing be discorvered so many years after. But when i see your video, I was almost crying (joke). I'm from europe so that "Rena" it's the first i hear her lol. I'm not even sure if her plane was present in this mission. I don't understand namco for the big cut for american version, and even less the second cut for the european version.
If they ever remaster Electrosphere and make it good, I hope they'll add some features to the ghost plane, so that it looks like it's been lying in water all this time, maybe with some damage to it to hunt you throughout this area.
Someone should recreate AC3 and add some sort of ARG or Creepypasta in there. Just upload it on the internet, hope someone finds this video, tries it out on their fake copy, and get creeped out by a "haunted" arcade plane game.
The other maze you found during the explanation of the "mysterious sea" was probably for testing length, physical limitations while accelerating, etc. Also that is a very spooky maze.
5:07 Lmao i though our friends were immortals, DUMMY RENA F Dude what a discovery ngl, personally after watching it i guess that the 'reverse maze' is actually a mirror for the 'true maze' or smt; i mean PS1 didn't had much hardware back then and to create mirrors it'll be a problem so i guess is somewhat like a 'parallel mirror' yet isn't a true mirror .... dunno mate, AC3 is such a good game full of theories that i get confused everytime XD
By the way tons of bar on title screen indicates number of mission you cleared, right? Nerfed US version has 111 bar total?! 37 bar for each row -top row for easy difficulty -middle row for normal difficulty -bottom row for hard difficulty I thought US version has total 36 mission (including secret one)? Yet there are 37 bar. Original Japanese version has total 52 bar, and it can be "filled" in ANY difficulty, as long as it's not the same mission.
Just a quick clarification of terminology. Easter egg: a secret or reference added by the developers with the explicit purposes of being found Bug/Glitch: when the game behaves in a way not intended by the developers. Error: when the game has trouble running a piece of code, usually resulting in a crash. What's in this video is most likely none of these, as it's probably just some test geometry
Recordar que los ace combat 3 de Europa y EEUU estan sumamente recortados mientras que la version japonesa tiene todos los niveles y la historia completa 😢
The inverted canyon is probably used for the fake reflections for when you look down during the mission. Really cool find!
I never thought about that, it make sense! haha.
Hehe, not 100% sure but it being inverted makes it look that way. BTW I just shared this on my Project NEMO Twitter so more people can see this

AC3 sometimes had that creepy and ghostly aesthetic from the late 90' and early 2000' hope they make a remake of this game soon
Ace combat 7

A few years ago I stumbled upon an Ace Combat 5 creepypasta, something about Chopper becoming a ghost after his death. Didn't fully read it tho
My guess is that is used for the reflection in the water, look at the textures color and compare, it's using a portal method for reflections.
Maybe the upside-down canyon was used by the game for reflections. Also, the PS1 had very very limited graphics memory, hence the absence of land.

I don't think so, when you cross the radar limit, the game gives you a mission fail, so it's hard to tell.
