Crappie are fantastic grilled whole. Lightly rub it with oil, toss on some garlic and or chives. Leave it on the grill until it's ~160-170F internally, maybe 6-7 minutes on each side.
Here in KY we call that a slab crappie. Great to eat. I woukd go back and see if you can find the school and jig for them. 15 to 30 more and you got a good fish fry. Crappie will suspend in deep water when it gets cold, then move in shallower to feed.
Use a green or red flasher with a leader roughly 18 inches long and a small pink hoochie for kokanee. Not sure how it will work down there but works well in bc
Down south of the country, we calling them sac au lait so if you hear someone says it then you know they are from the south. Also, with crappie that big, start calling them slab. If you find one, you find the school. Maybe drop a trailer crappie jig grub on your trolling lure to limit you out at 25. Should try clear lake by them docks for crappie n big ol catfish.
You don't have to bleed crappie, they don't have a blood line. Any Panfish, like yellow perch, lg mouth bass, bluegill etc do not have bloodlines. You will see when you fillet it. Great video!
Dude, this is one of my wife and my favorite eating fish. Minnesota cold water crappie are great. Dredge them in a seasoned corn flour mix and fry in butter. I'm a little concerned that California lake water is a bit warm which might make them not be as wonderful as they could, but I hope that you enjoy them anyway.
I've asked this before, but I'm wondering why you keep pedaling when you're playing a fish. Seems like it's creating more pressure on the fish than necessary. Never fished from a kayak before so is this a kayak-specific technique? Thanks for the daily videos!
My guess is that he’s worried about the other line getting snagged or tangled. There’s gotta be a solution to that. It totally messes with fighting a fish, I agree.
@@marcnomad9736 Thanks! Yeah, I can see that being one way to minimize the chance of tangling. It would really be a challenge to have two fish on at the same time. Not sure if I've seen that happen to him yet. That would be chaos (would make for a great video!).
He does this because he's used to fishing for feeder salmon. With single hook, barbless being in the regs you pedal to keep tension on them so they don't spit the hook.
WELCOME TO THE "CRAPPIE" FAMILY....THOSE ARE "SLABS"!!!!!!!...I KNEW IT WAS A CRAPPIE...A NEW SPECIES FOR YOU!!!..LOL.....I've been targeting them and SKUNKING...lol...I guess I need to go after TROUT & LAND-LOCKED SALMON....LOL....THUMBS-UP!!!!!!!!!!!!
Going after open water kings or trout in December seems like a stretch. This time of year I’d be fishing spawn sacks in the tributaries. Idk maybe it’s different in CA?
It is a little different bro, we have ocean running kings and steelhead but our runs are dismal especially this year due to water allocation and usage. In terms of reservoir tributaries, most are disproportionately small for the size of the lake and very warm, so we don’t have a spawning run. Because of this, most of the trout and salmon in the reservoirs are stocked. In addition, the stocked freshwater salmon are planted directly in the lake, which makes spawning runs not likely. Most of the stocking is done in winter too so open water trout is on right now.
@@Nik-gh6gz I’m on WI side of Lake Michigan, no wild fish here but they plant fish in the tribs and harbors and they return for a spawn run aug/Sept for kings and steelhead oct cohos and giant browns move in. no real successful spawning going on here, but our fish are huge.
In the mid-west, it’s popular to fillet these, cut them into smaller pieces and bread them with a product called Shore Lunch, then deep fry. Usually only do it if there is a fair amount of fish to make it worth it. Those crappie are big.
Yep, I think it twists the line badly when reeling like that. Gotta find the “sweet spot” for the fish on. If you can’t, the drag washers may need to be cleaned/refurb. Nice crappie tho
When you catch one fish that spot with a crappie jig vertical presentation 4 or 6 pound line. If you don’t see them on the sonar move around until you see a school of them.
If you troll that shad rap closer to the bank there you can get some BIG spotted and largemouth bass on it too. If you like the crappie you will like the taste of black bass as well. I know its heresy but I prefer spotted bass over crappie, largemouth aren't as good as spotted but they are still good.
I fish from a canoe, not a kayak. I'm curious why you keep pedaling and fight the fish behind you , rather than stopping, pivoting, and playing the fish in front of you. To continue trolling seems like a good way to lose fish.
I never target crappie before but always accidentally catch dinks. Those are slabs! Great catch. Some swear they are the best freshwater fish to eat. Thanks for the grind and helping us get thru another lockdown.👍
Nice crappies. They will suspend in open water and they are usually in schools, so if you troll back through where you caught one you may pick up another.
Dude that's a slammer crappie.... well, at least by Northeastern standards anyway. Coat it in franks hot sauce, then dredge in your favorite fish fry batter and deep fry, delicious.

Crappie , a lot of good family memories fishing for such
Two nice crappie , they'll give you some nice fillets
Next to Walleye...Crappie taste amazing....shouldve gone over them with the fish finder...probably a huge school of them near a rock pile...

Yum! I would cook that fish whole.
That crappie would be my pb!!!
those crappie school out deep following bait

You very well could pick up a spring on it to probably just a difference in trolling speeds between species
Looks fun man I cant wait till I have my own kayak for fishing!!!
That was a BLACK CRAPPIE.
Oh, and yer gonna like it!

You will LOVE tasting crappie for the first time.
You should try to catch crappie or trout with a Sabiki rig. That would be sick to see.

What a crappy day for those crappies.
That Rapala brokeback shad is my favorite fresh water lure.
Tighten your drag!!
O my slap 👋 !!!big crappy broo
That’s a tank of a crappie especially for your first one!
Nice crappie brotha, a donkey. Black crappie I think. Frying is a favorite for them kind of like catfish.
Good stuff Adam.
I’m in Ohio. Best fish here..Walleye perch gills crappie catfish 👌🏼

Nice crappie tho
Good catch they look big
Lake Berryessa is well-known for Crappie, I guess you proved that on this video. OSH :-)
Lake Berryessa!
When fish gets hooked, why do you keep peddling?? 🤔
keeps tension on the line, makes it harder for the fish to get off. If you give slack it can spit the hook.
Nice slabs 🤙💨💨
Wonderful yummy fish
3:00 its why we fish dude.
crappie > surfperch, all day
When you catch one fish that spot with a crappie jig vertical presentation 4 or 6 pound line. If you don’t see them on the sonar move around until you see a school of them.
I’ve crappie fished for a while and you accidentally caught 2 of the biggest crappies I’ve seen! Nice catches!!
Freshwater surf perch! lol
1:56 was your drag set correctly? it sounded like you were letting out line that entire time.
He definitely was, so I would say no.
Great vid man your channel is getting so good!
That's a nice crappie my dude!
Scale the crappy leave the skin on and pan fry with lemon pepper and butter...the tail and the fins are also delicious cuz they get very crispy
You might want to use the triangle flashers with a small j-plug or Kwik fish on the down rigger. With about a 4-5 foot leader.

Nice sized crappie! Looks tasty!
I saw you on the water, what a slow day
What lake is this at
@@marcoverde9790 lake nanya
Big ass panfish in deep open water seem to really hit the deep dive bomber rattle Rapala's, if you have one try it.
Those are absolute slabs for crappie. I hope you breaded and fried them
Crappie my favorite fish. The flounder is a saltwater fish. How do they get in the lake?
What state?
Very nice 👌 👍
Love the content bro!
huge crappie!!! they live in schools keep troll over the same spot multiple times to catch multiple crappie. great catch
You’re gettin closer to the Koke zone.
Hmmz.. is it that lake I am thinking off. 🤔
But on rapalas? He's definitely not trolling koke speeds.
@@kito1san could be that lake
@@slacktide_angler sounds like he’s movin in range of Koke speed occasionally based on video 10.
Congrats on the crappie fun fish to target on the delta
Those were huge crappie, good job, Adam! Pan fry! You lucky son of a gun!I don't know anybody trolling for Crappie!
You know it’s not a trout because trout don’t bite on camera 😂
Should mark the spot, because they are usually schooled up together.
I don't know why they were down so deep, but crappies can be odd at times. Nice BLACK crappie! 👍
Nice fat slab on the Rapala!
The biggest crappie I’ve heard of was like 4.2 lbs they probably get bigger !! Great job man !!
You will learn that crappie taste better than surf perch! Good job those two were way larger than average 🤙🏼
what setup do you use for your chest mic?
I think your drag is too loose. If your drag peels while you are reeling in, you aren't gaining much line and you're introducing a ton of line twist.
I've caught many crappie trolling for trout. Nice catch!
In those types of boats EVERY day is leg day!
Crappie are one of the best tasting fresh water fish. You will love it.
How does the crappie fight compared to the surf perch? Similar?
My grandpa goes crazy over crappie. His favorite fish
Why do you continue to pedal when you have a hook up?
That is a toad of a crappie!
You should make a follow up video that’s strictly cooking related 🤟🏻🔥

If your goal is salmon I would not be using Rapalas. Hoochie rig with a dodger. Florescent colors (green, orange, pink).
I never target crappie before but always accidentally catch dinks. Those are slabs! Great catch. Some swear they are the best freshwater fish to eat. Thanks for the grind and helping us get thru another lockdown.👍
Troll spotfin shad crank baits for salmon there
Can you tell us what lake you were on? Those are beautiful crappie, better than surf perch in my opinion.
Nice crappies. They will suspend in open water and they are usually in schools, so if you troll back through where you caught one you may pick up another.
Crappie are some of the best eating fresh water fish period...biggest one I've ever seen just over 4 ibs. But anyone over a pound is a nice crappie...
Dude that's a slammer crappie.... well, at least by Northeastern standards anyway. Coat it in franks hot sauce, then dredge in your favorite fish fry batter and deep fry, delicious.
Adam, that was a damn nice Crappie and they're great eaters when the water gets cold and their meat firms up! Fish tacos all day dude!!!
Do a clean n cook.
What lake is this because I’ve had some crappie before but I’ve only caught one
Where are you at that has Salmon & Trout? No trout in the sea....
They're delicious 😋, we feast on them in the east. Enjoy,
Why do you peddle away from your fish with barb hook?
I'll by some of your merch if you tell me what Lake this is....diehardfish.com?
What is the name of the lake? Where are you?
I would guess Lake Berryessa.
That's a slab brah check out Hook City TV he catch em all the time!
I want to know about your life vest
If it's crappie, you should not be trolling it. That will put too much tension on their paper mouths and rip out.
I love your channel but when you fish lakes you need to tighten your drag, way too loose!
lol seriously.
Slab hunter....
