I'm learning this piece at the moment and I was a bit proud of how I played it, I thought it sounded pretty ok. And then I came here and I realised that I actually sound like crap haha. He just has such an incredible quality of sound and he makes it look easy to play violin because there are never really any bits where it sounds scrappy and bad (apart from the audio freaking out but that's not Ray's playing).
If you think you don't measure up to this performance then listen to Maxim Wengerov play it and weep. His performances literally move me to tears. They are sublime.
So moved by this performance - if you close your eyes and just listen you can feel the all the emotions being poured into this piece. Thanks Ray and Julio for reawakening my passion for classical music and making me feel alive!
Just listening a few seconds of your tone production makes me understand how you could snag the 1st prize in the Queen Elisabeth. Very sweet and wonderful sound. You will have a very long and prosperous career.

To be able to sight read(!) and play this piece (which is one of my absolute favourites) is one aim and to crystallize that intention am about to order the sheet music. Working on 2nd finger notes which are a bit of a hit 'n' miss affair and finding I can't focus on sight reading, bowing, fingering and timing all at the same time! Am taking a step back over Christmas just to get my bowing straight and fingering accurate while standing in front of a mirror! Then 3rd/4th finger in the New Year. Hugely challenging but hey...
