  • Just a short video showing how to remedy the annoying belt slipping problem I was having on my Dyson vacuum cleaner.
    Should I start making vacuum cleaner repair videos? I have extensive experience repairing them. Tell me in the comments below.

    I've taken my dc17 completely apart, cleaned the tornado mechanism etc.....what a chore. Jees don't EVER run the vacuum over wet surfaces. The fine dust turns to mud and makes a HORRIBLE mess internally.it takes hours to thoroughly clean.
    I did not clean the spindle on the beater bar. My vacuum makes a horrendous noise when on the carpet. So will take out the brush motor a do as you showed.
    Thank you for the detailed explanation and video.

      I thoroughly cleaned the beater brush and motor spindle, it did not correct the belt slipping. It only does it on carpeting. New belt and beater brush did not correct the issue.
      Still looking for a solution.

    GREAT VIDEO! I love my DC17.
    One little correction: the tool needed is a T15 Torx, not T5.

    Great video. I will add that the root of my belt issue was the belt spring tension roller. It had completely come out of its plastic mount though I did get back together. No telling how long it will last.

    Thanks for the video! I was able to diagnose my noisy vacuum and fix it while my kiddos napped. Didn't expect a 20-minute vacuuming project to turn into an all-afternoon job . . . but at least I saved dough and didn't take it in somewhere.

    Great video. My DC17 had a terrible rattle from the beater brush, and didn’t expect it was curable. Your video did the trick!! Keep up the good work!

    My family once had a DC17 just like yours. We had it from 2004 to 2013. the machine developed that same slipping belt problem, but when my parents tried to fix it, they didn't bother or think of accessing the brush roll motor. We replaced the unit with a DC33, which works great, but I sometimes miss the DC17 my family once had.

    Ah, the DC-17, Dyson's best cleaner. If only they didn't make more of these. I work at a vacuum shop and our preferred cleaners are Sanitaire and Riccar, though we do sell some of Hoover's bagged uprights, too. We see too many Sharks coming in, all with ridiculous issues, bad micro-switches, circuit boards(Electrolux was fine with just a breaker), and many with NO parts availability. The worst thing to work on is a Bissell carpet shampooer, far too complicated for what they do. Most common issue is not spraying.

      I've owned a whole bunch of Dysons over the years, and this is definitely the best cleaning one I've ever had. I had a DC14 before this though, which really worked very well, and I liked the smaller size compared to how much of a behemoth the DC17 is.
      From a servicing standpoint, you really can't beat Sebo. I fell into servicing a small fleet of S12's for a friends cleaning company, and the ease of disassembly is incredible for a vacuum cleaner.
      I've only worked on two Mieles, and I was really annoyed by how convoluted some of the designs were, especially the swivel neck system on the upright I worked on. What a PITA.

    • @richardhz-oi8px
      @richardhz-oi8px 5 років тому

      @@Rustbelt_Research I know Sebo is quite good, we just don't see them. The shop was at one point one of the largest Eureka dealers in the Detroit area, we could assemble 10 of them just from spare parts on hand henceforth a heavy preference for Sanitaire. You should see some of the utterly trashed commercial Sanitaires we get looking and working like new again. They are our hottest seller for rebuilds, we can sell them for $150 easily. Everything gets disassembled and washed, metal parts other than the hood and handle get a wire wheel, worn parts are replaced.
      We have Miele's full line, but only push their canisters, their uprights are heavy on the hand and over complicated. If someone wants a tool on board upright we tend to show them Riccar if it is in their budget.
      More videos like this would be interesting. I collect various cleaners from a 1920s Hoover model 543(we still have many of the parts for) to a Hoover Model 918 HD commercial and a few Kirbys. I also collect tube color televisions, lawn equipment(Wheelhorse RJ-58, Bantam Zero turn, a LawnBoy, and a Toro model 16570), and various household appliances(eg, washers, a dryer, etc.)

    Small footnotes to an excellent presentation:
    1) the screws that fit the motor housing are T-15 not T-5
    2) Be aware the motor rests at an angle. If you try to install with the plane of the motor parallel to the base you will be frustrated.

    I followed your video and it was very helpful. However, I noticed that I have a tension wheel for the belt that I didn't see in your video. I believe it's inside the black motor cover. When I put my vacuum cleaner all back together I couldn't get the belt back on. The tension wheel for the belt appears to have heated up, popped out of the plastic clip, and melted part of the plastic clip. It was wedged in at an angle and was preventing the belt from going back on. it appears that it can't be repaired. Is it necessary to have this tension roller for the belt? Do you have a video on how to replace the tension wheel?

    This help fixed my noise problem. I put it back together and now it isn't sucking up real well. When I put the motor in, it wasn't clear which side went down into the clear casing. I had the side of the motor that had the writing on it down into the clear casing. Can you clear that up for me? Or advice why it is sucking? Thanks

    • @Rustbelt_Research
      @Rustbelt_Research  4 роки тому

      As far as I know. The motor can fit either way. As long as the wiring is all in the right place, I wouldn't worry about it. As for why it's not sucking well. Check the clear hose the baseplate connects to for clogs, and also remove and wash or replace both of the machine's filters. I suggest replacement, as they're really cheap. Does it have good suction at the handle when in upright mode?

    Do you have any idea where to find that little gear on the brush bar motor? Mine is worn down a bit and is causing even new belts to start squealing after just a handful of uses. Thanks for the detailed teardown.

  • @llamacebu216

    This is about 35% complete of fixing your problem. Your problem is you have 2 filters. One filter you can soak in water and the other shoot air through. Then once you start getting into the inside. All the cones at the very top will be clogged. You'll need to unscrew each section and clean each piece

      I am very familiar with breaking down the cyclone pack for cleaning. But this issue has nothing to do with that.

      I owned a Sebo X1 for several years along with this Dyson. Sebos are well designed, well built, durable, easy to service machines. I like them a lot.
      The only issue is that being a bagged cleaner, and my house being one with a dog, the Sebo would always develop a bad dog odor after a couple weeks of use. I tried an activated carbon filter, and different bags. But eventually I gave up and just kept using my Dyson.
