Gotta love those "we were going to toss this, but you can have it" rescues. That's how my dad ended up coming home with a 7.5 yard bolt of royal blue velveteen for me. He was helping someone clear an old storage room and thought it was just some cotton (because of how it was folded and rolled onto the cardboard), so he rescued it for me to have mock-up fabric. When he gave it to me, I unrolled it to measure it and gasped so loud I scared my cat. Still haven't done anything with it, two years later, because it needs to be the elusive Perfect Project!
Winner of a video, I've been looking for "flapper dress 1920s pattern" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Panadarson Flapper Falbala - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my neighbour got amazing results with it.
I've never seen the 20's style on anyone not a size 2 and stick straight. I always avoided it because of that. This video could convince me to try it now! That dress looked incredible on you!!!
I spy a tiny Costuming Drama in the corner! 😎 This is making me want to give another 20's dress a try, so comfortable. I love the story behind the bit of black lace on your undergown!
Morgan - I found your channel through your video on the 1-hour dress! :) I ended up making two - love them both and friends were so impressed. They had no idea how easy it was!
I love this! It was nice to see how the dress looked (btw it looks amazing!!) on someone who isn’t the “ideal 20’s figure!” I’ve only ever seen 20’s wear on very thin, flat chested people and it was nice to see that a 20’s evening gown can look nice on someone who is more me shaped! I’m going to a 20’s themed NYE party and this video has inspired me to try and make one for myself to wear!
We have a New Years party every year and this year we're bringing back the 20's, so I am making a slip and overdress based on the One-Hour Dress. I have a lightweight black satin for the slip and a gorgeous blue burnout lace for the overdress. Here's hoping it comes out nice! Also, I'd be very interested in your research on 20's fashion for "curvy girls". I love the silhouette, and hope to make several more dresses for everyday wear. Loved the singing!
Oh, i didn't know that was a thing, a cocoon coat. Kid has a cardigan draping that way. We call it the cocoon. 🤔 And wow, what a surprise, you singing at the end. Nice!
Marika, what a great video. Thanks always for being so clear in your instructions and filming! 1920s are a decade I just haven't put much thought into because like you said, it's not really flattering to my figure. However, I am intrigued enough to study every day fashion trends of that time. Cocoon coat...I have a picture of my great grandmother wearing one - I wonder what they feel like on? Hmmm.... Blessings to you!
I enjoyed the montage of French seams AND the music choice! :D I also appreciated the reminder that "women in the 1920's came in all shapes and sizes, just as we do today."
1920s isn’t my favorite either, but your dress is SO pretty! Thanks for sharing! Also perfect timing, I’m sewing a dress as well, so I got to watch this as I sewed!
1920s is my favourite era in clothing! I think it's because of all the sequins they used towards the end of the decade!! The dress you made is stunning!! Xx
Your channel came up within the last several days on UA-cam and I saw a dress you've started, the w one with needle lace from the museum. Now I'm addicted to your sews!
Great job on the dress! I wasn't sure how it would look either as I have a similar body type to you and I'm dubious of the 20's silhouette. It was cute though. I saw you in one of Bernadette Banner's Costume College vlogs by the way.
I have to admit that when I watch your videos I find myself looking at your books. I love the Outlander series as well. And I have many of the same books as you do 😀 Thank you for sharing your sewing skills and projects with us🤩
Stunning blue color for that slip and you have a lovely singing voice to boot! All my relatives in pictures from 1920’s were “stout” and their costumes (“outfits”) didn’t have the fringe or excessive ornamentation of the thin flat-silhouette styles. I will join you on the #StashBusting 2020 self-Challenge also. Happy Christmas and congrats on a creative year! (Props to your fellow historian sewing folk for leading me to your channel and talents!! ..Morgan and Bernadette 👍)
I'm genuinely impressed with the chiffon. For me it's pure hell to sew it... That raw edge finishes with zigzag are just beautiful! And it looks so easy when you do it. Maybe in summer I'll get the courage to try again :) And you have a beautiful voice, thank you for sharing!
I love this dress! You did an amazing job! I am of the stout persuasion and square enough to fit into men's clothes without too much difficulty (except that they're always too long :( ) and it's always nice to see someone making larger sizes! It reminds me that anyone can sew and make beautiful things!
Love the 20s. I’m looking for a simple beginner friendly day dress. I’m new to the channel and I love in Scotland. Your sewing is fantastic and that dress is stunning.
Huzzah for the stashbusting gorgeousness! It looks beautiful on you. That blue is a great color for you! Can't wait to hear more about these 20s tips for "stout" ladies. Because I will never look like the ideal 1920s lady with all these curves.
Your back, yippee. I'm also not a fan of the 1920's silhouette but the fabric and beadwork were often amazing. However, saying that I think you looked great in your dress and I just loved your flapper moves. Also great that your doing your intros in front of your library again. Here's to more stash busting.
Just in time! I've been staring at the fabric that is my future NYE dress. I really like how yours turned out. I think I'm going to abandon the robe de style plan for now and just do something more like this. Thank you! You look lovely!
Hello fellow theatre kid! The dress is absolutely lovely, as is your singing voice. I automatically started singing along at the end :-D I'm also not a fan of the shape of 1920s dresses, but I adore the style of them. I'm now considering making a 1920s historybounding dress with a more flattering shape but 1920s decoration aka all the lace and beading one could ever want.
Just received an actual pattern from the time copyrighted 1921 that I happened to find in our size on etsy! Gonna make a summer day dress to wear to Coco this year. So excited!
I am so looking forward to making this. I am attending a themed wedding in October and every dress I have seen is tack-nasty. So I looked at some movies from that depicted 1920’s style, and this is the silhouette I found.
This is such a good stash busting project omg. I love how light and airy the chiffon layer turned out! I think after getting through the whole video, I'm going to need to try french seams at some point. They make everything look so clean!
I am new to costuming, but you and the other costuming vlogers are really getting me going. I found your channel after seeing you at Costume College this year in the other ladies videos and just loved your astrologer dress! Nicolle spoke of you in one of her videos and that's how I found you. Your patterning skills are amazing and I have no idea how you sew on such a little desk with all of that fabric! Thanks for all you share with us. Merry Christmas!!
Those cocoon coats do look cozy. Also, nerd here, I can't help but peruse your shelves while you talk. The frock is beautiful and looks wonderful on you. Great use of that salvaged lace! All that jazz!
How smart to label your patterns with the bust and hip measurement! I'll put the commercial size (if there is one), but actual measurements make so much more sense.
Thank you for doing a 1920's chemise style dress for plus sized figures. It's beautiful. Hopefully you will do a cocoon coat to go with it and you have a marvelous singing voice and Merry Christmas 🎄⛄❄🎅 Peace, Love and Joy 💗
Thanks for all the detailed technical info and well filmed close ups! I know how to french seam now without ever opening a book...:) Your projects always turn out so neatly and beautifully made, something to strive for!
I think 1920's is a great fashion decade. The construction is deceptively simple, but the fine details in finishing and trim are amazing. I don't think the styles are unflattering, it's in the choices in fabric, seaming, ornamentation.
Love the gown ,well done helped me with a lot of technical things. It looked pretty good after all the silhouette is different as you not eveeyone is stick thin, llove the over gowns. Really good.
I’m absolutely planning to make a Poiret reproduction cocoon coat using the Folkwear pattern. Of course I plan to make it of a printed plush fleece from Joann, because it’s fun to make period clothes in ridiculous fabrics. It’ll make a cuddly wrap to wear around the house and out to evening parties.
I really like how that dress ended up turning out! Like you, I'm not entirely sold on the 20s silhouette as someone thats shouted but I think this ended up really flattering in the end
Love this, it actually popped up at the perfect time for me as i actually need to make myself a dress for my 21st party. It was all fun and games planning to have a 1920s murder mystery party but i hadn't thought too much about costumes lol
So lovely, but truly, I agree, this style was made for women who did not have much curves, such as my Grand-mother, but my Great-Grand-mother had the curves, and so do I, thus, this style is hopeless for the likes of me. I love the cocoon coat also, and it perhaps should be on your list for 2020. Great voice by the way!
Thank you for an easy to follow tutorial. Also ,I spotted the Outlander Series on your bookshelf behind you! I recently made a "Claire" shawl and skirt for our annual Ghostwalk production.
Thanks for this post! I'm planning a 1920s outfit and was inspired by your experience. I too am a stout woman, so I am a bit wary, but I will persevere.
I love the dress!! But, Im sorry, I don't sew, but im interested in the process, so I fast-forward thru the sewing to the bits I enjoy. I LOVE the dress! I'd love to see the velvet bits if you complete them. I hope you had/have fun at the party, and I liked the shoes you chose to wear.
I am one of those sneaky new subscribers! found you when searching for a 1920s dress to make for NYE, but then came across you again when clicking on everyone from the costuber secret santa list, as i am sure many others have too :)
I think we have about the same body type and I'm thinking of making a 1920s dress for more of an every day look... your evening gown is beautiful and as alway I'm looking forward to seeing your next video 😁

The 20s silhouette isn't always the greatest, but it sure is comfortable! I made myself a simple 1-hour dress for the Downtown Abbey movie premiere a few months ago - loving seeing more 20s styles coming out for the new year! :D I found your channel through the Secret Santa CosTuber gift exchange, really fun and glad to have found you and the rest of the group! I had only been following a couple of people on the list.
Goodness, if that beautiful fabric wasn’t some of your favorite stash material, I’d enjoy seeing the stuff you are in love with! Where are you going to wear your 1920s dress?
I know you’re not sure about the style of the 1920’s gowns but I must say I think it looks amazing on you! Loved the gown you created. You look beautiful! 🖤
Oh thank goodness. This is such a timely video. I'm designing a 20's gown for a formal banquet this year and I've been so intimidated to work with the chiffon. This helps so much.
Gotta love those "we were going to toss this, but you can have it" rescues. That's how my dad ended up coming home with a 7.5 yard bolt of royal blue velveteen for me. The Closet Historian has also done a 1920s dress and looks stunning.
I spy a tiny Costuming Drama in the corner! 😎
This is making me want to give another 20's dress a try, so comfortable. I love the story behind the bit of black lace on your undergown!
Morgan Donner I saw your comments so had to be on the lookout as well. 🥰
Waste not, want not! 😊 I have a few pieces of trim from that show that are still waiting for their time to shine.
Morgan - I found your channel through your video on the 1-hour dress! :) I ended up making two - love them both and friends were so impressed. They had no idea how easy it was!

did you end up making the dress? 🙂
*BREAKING NEWS* MARIKA CAN S I N G HOLY
☺️☺️☺️
the 1920s are my absolute favourite fashion period I just adore the silhouette
Oooo.... our girl can sing!!!
The dress is beautiful! I also think the underdress would make a really easy, comfortable hot weather dress.
We have a New Years party every year and this year we're bringing back the 20's, so I am making a slip and overdress based on the One-Hour Dress. Loved the singing!
Please do a video on robe de style.
Oh, i didn't know that was a thing, a cocoon coat. Kid has a cardigan draping that way. We call it the cocoon. 🤔
And wow, what a surprise, you singing at the end. Nice!
I have a cardigan shaped like a cocoon coat! Comes to mid calf, and is my favourite light weight cardi!
Yes, you need a cocoon coat I totally agree, and I need one too. lol ... They are so beautiful with the lush roll of the shawl collar.
My goal is to one day be as confident as you at free handing the rotary cutter! Thanks for another fun project 😀
I believe in you! I practiced by drawing straight and wiggly lines on fabric and trying to follow them the best I could!
me: man its 1am I should sleep
enchanted rose costumes: drops this
me: nah i dont need sleep
I'm sorry 😆
This is totally me. Lol
And me
Love it!!
Those delicate french seams 🙌. That's the content I'm here for.
It's fabulous! I do 1920s historybounding so I love seeing other costumers do 20s.
Marika, what a great video. Thanks always for being so clear in your instructions and filming! 1920s are a decade I just haven't put much thought into because like you said, it's not really flattering to my figure. Nice to finally see a 1920s style dress on my own body type!
I love this 20's gown. Holy Easter egg Batman! What a beautiful voice to go with a beautiful lady. ❤
Came here after hearing so much from Bernadette Banner :) Glad the join a fellow theater kid in the costuming community!
I love what the overdress did for the silhouette. I'm pear shaped so I have no idea how to make that silhouette look right on me 😂
1920s is my favourite era in clothing! I think it's because of all the sequins they used towards the end of the decade!!
The dress you made is stunning!! Xx
These videos are so calming. I could watch sewing videos all day.
Love it! I found you watching a Costume College post. Next is your constellation gown!
I fell in love with that gown 😍

I saw you in one of Bernadette Banner's Costume College vlogs by the way.
You make the 1920’s look good! Well done!
I love how the dress came out, and you have a lovely voice! Also I can see you practiced the Charleston, too; a lady of many talents!
Aaah your colour palettes are always sp pretty! That dress is a dream ❤
I have to admit that when I watch your videos I find myself looking at your books. I love the Outlander series as well. And I have many of the same books as you do 😀 Thank you for sharing your sewing skills and projects with us🤩

Paula Davitt you could try a one hour dress! There’s patterns and tutorials on the web
Definitely try the 1 hour dress! Morgan Donner did a video on one last year!
Holy crow lady, you can wail!! Well done. Catherine Zeta look out!
Huzzah for the stashbusting gorgeousness! It looks beautiful on you. That blue is a great color for you! Can't wait to hear more about these 20s tips for "stout" ladies. Because I will never look like the ideal 1920s lady with all these curves.

Lovely project and very lovely voice, Marika! Thanks for showing us!
*squints* Is that Costuming Drama in the back as you cut Chiffon? Because I do the exact same thing.
😁😁😁👍
I liked your video, I have no talent for sewing but I like to watch y'all that do. Singing at the end was perfect!

Beautiful gown and you looked like you were born for this dress. A ton of work.
Lovely. And you sing too! Enjoyed this video very much. You popped up randomly.

I wish I had seen this before I created a 1920’s dress for a production of Singin’ in the Rain! Yours turned out so much cuter than mine.
Your music choice is always so on point!
Edit: your SINGING I’m DEAD the VIBRATO
Thank you 😊😊
Thanks for all the detailed technical info and well filmed close ups! I know how to french seam now without ever opening a book...:) Your projects always turn out so neatly and beautifully made, something to strive for!
Cocoon coats for all! I would love to make one! I am a total noob to making historical clothing!
I think 1920's is a great fashion decade. The construction is deceptively simple, but the fine details in finishing and trim are amazing. I don't think the styles are unflattering, it's in the choices in fabric, seaming, ornamentation.
Your dress is lovely!
Your hand sewing is fantastic!
I think it's very pretty and flows nice. It's pretty on you!!!
Stunning! And that under-dress was gorgeous - and very flattering :-)
Thank You for taking the time to share you beautiful work, the ending was great!
Love the gown ,well done helped me with a lot of technical things. It looked pretty good after all the silhouette is different as you not eveeyone is stick thin, llove the over gowns. Really good.
Dark blue is so stunning on you!!!

Yes!!! Make one please!!! The cocoon coat!!!!!
Hella excited that my school’s spring musical is going to be singin in the rain and I’m going to be Costumes head
Will do- I’m working on the winter musical this month and it’s so much fun; we’re doing She Kills Monsters
You do fabulous work.
That dress was wonderful on you.
This dress is so glam!

What a lovely dress! You looked so cute! And my jaw dropped when I heard you sing - your stunning voice gave me the chills!
Thanks for this post! I'm planning a 1920s outfit and was inspired by your experience. I too am a stout woman, so I am a bit wary, but I will persevere.
That color is beautiful! You did a amazing job!
Stunning! Wow, wow, wow
Hi Marika :) found you via Bernadette's costume college vlog. Your constellation gown was magnificent!
I love this dress.
This is beautiful! What a wonderful job you’ve done
I think we have about the same body type and I'm thinking of making a 1920s dress for more of an every day look... your evening gown is beautiful and as alway I'm looking forward to seeing your next video 😁
Watching ironing being done is like watching the fireplace channel - soothing. Carols Dunn in her Daisy Dalrymple mysteries refers to the woes of the curvier or stouter person (the heroin) dressing fashionably in the 1920s.
Beautiful! You have inspired me to learn how to sew!!!
Love the gown and love it on you! 🖤💙🖤
I can confirm that applying velvet to chiffon is an absolute nightmare.
Beautiful. That's a lot of patience in all those French Seams.
Very cool gown, came out great!!

Oh thank goodness. This is such a timely video. I'm designing a 20's gown for a formal banquet this year and I've been so intimidated to work with the chiffon. This helps so much.
Love the bit at the end when you are dancing! We mostly see still drawings or photos of these fashions, and I love seeing how the style moves.
