It would suck if took away something you wasn't supposed to.

    Once again, the formula:
    - Reveal crappy product
    - It gets fan backlash
    - Insult the fans
    - “Don’t like it don’t buy it”
    - Watch as the product flops
    - Blame fans for game not selling

"Concord was largely considered a flop."
$400 million and 8 years of development for dismal player counts, shut down after 3 weeks, and all purchases refunded.
That's not "largely considered a flop". That's _objectively_ a staggeringly massive flop.

      @@qu1253 Fair point. I misremembered.
And in the further interest of fairness, apparently the $400 million budget claim was from an unnamed alleged Concord developer and its legitimacy has been questioned by some in the industry.
But just as the difference between 2 and 3 weeks is ultimately trivial, so is the actual budget. The fact that they refunded all purchases, and therefore made $0, makes it objectively a flop no matter what the budget was.

I wish these people would keep Hi-Fi Rush out of their mouths, it was doomed from the beginning with XBox having zero faith in its success, the people in the big chairs decided to shutter the studio before the game even released
When it did come out and ended up successful and insanely popular, the higher-ups still didn’t care and decided that because they wouldn’t see a return on investment for a sequel until a couple years later they shut the studio down
The entire thing is corporate bullshit and executives hating money

    • @theblueocean50
      @theblueocean50 2 дні тому +8

Not to mention, the fact that the game was available on game pass day 1, the xbox game pass can offer some great deals for us to play games at minimum cost, but from a corporate perspective it may not bring that much revenue, specially if we take into account the fact that not many people are going to sign a subscription to play one game or maintain that subscription for longer periods of time.
Hi-fi rush is an awesome game, but if they were expecting to get loads of money with a strategy like that one, then they are to blame for having such a high expectation in the first place.
Also, a game does not need to be a gold mine in order to be successful, but this is something that the gaming industry never learns.

That's because they are exactly that more often than not, in practice, and that has been the case since the dawn of video game hobbyism itself. Collusion between critic and industry is as old as the modern press itself.
There are 19th century business ads with bought-out reviews for all manner of things including the origin of the ubiquitous "Snake-Oil salesman"; aka, charlatanry. Charlatans, far more often than not, ran their scam by simply colluding with media-press figures by buying out their opinions and printing fake testimonials.
Of course, once people catch onto the sham, the market self-corrects and anyone pulling that crap sees less and less efficacy...for a time anyway. ("There's a sucker born every minute" is true; nobody is born all-knowing.)

    • @MisterZimbabwe

Problem is if the journos don't stay close to the makers of the products, they get access revoked for review material, while others who do suck the game makers dicks will get access which means they publish first which means the ethical ones who remain neutral or critical get buried.
Nothing short of some sort of legal enforcement keeping journos from getting too close to the source will suffice to solve that conundrum

“People purposely misunderstanding” is rampant in all parts of life atm. In the entertainment, social, and political landscapes, people refuse to be honest because then they’d be faced with the truth that they’re part of the problem and would no longer be able to sit atop their high horse, and they’d actually have to put forth effort to change. Change is hard. Admitting you’re wrong and part of the problem is harder. These types of people take the “path of least resistance” and place the burden of change on everyone else. Placing blame on others takes minimal effort and will even net you a plethora of “allies” that pat you on your head for saying the right things rather than challenging the inconsistencies of ideologies within all spheres of life.

Once people get comfortable with a job, they feel entitled to that job, whether they continue to do it well or not. The same thing goes for people with lots of experience or certifications. This is why savvy businesses these days are hiring for soft skills over experience. You can’t easily or cheaply train someone to have integrity or be organized, but you can easily train someone to input data in a computer.

Same with Concord. People saying "I don't want this" and calling out propagandistic content don't stop the people that would want this from buying it. In fact, the dialogue on it would be free advertisement for the "modern audience".
If, that is, a modern audience existed. It doesn't. I hope the people that pushed this crap feel comforted by the fact that their still employed executives got that ESG grant money while they, themselves head to the unemployment office.

The larger point here is that LegendaryD is dead on that we're going to see more of what happened in 2024 because many of these studios are still not listening to the players, and it won't be our fault when they fail. As someone with a professional design education, I cannot tell you enough how much I see in games in recent years complete and utter failing or ignoring of some of the most fundamental design principles, stuff that the entire field of design in any capacity is based on.
Its like they hire people who have no idea what they are even doing and are in their job by being self-proclaimed instead of professionally tought.
And I am not talking about indie games. AA - AAA games is where I see very questionable UI, UX and lack of QoL features.
Way too many times in recent years I played a game and was completely dumbfounded by major parts of it as they clearly say that the people that worked on and and the people in charge probably don't have a professional comprehension of design.
It got worse and worse over the years, from formatting issues, ignoring informative clarity, basic framing and more. Heck, just talking about it is making me want to play one of those old COD games, but they're all unplayable on PC due to RCE exploits that Activision has never acknowledged and never attempted to fix (this seriously should warrant a lawsuit. They're selling software that could genuinely result in the user's PC getting compromised. But even if they weren't, I'm not paying the exorbitant prices Activision wants for 10+ year old games).

I think the quest you are talking about is "The Sacrifice," and I have to agree that it is one of the best quests ever. Even then, there are many ways that this DEI can be successful, if not extreme. Some of these journalists need to watch Warframe stories to understand how to include diversity well. Just the most recent update quest, "The Hex", had 6 main characters, A speedy nerd in Volt (who I think is Arab or Indian his looks match, but his accent doesn't someone can correct me idk), a medic-loyal girl, in Trinity (who is Latino), a cheery metal bender in Mag (Who is Asian), Quincy is the hitman that reminds me of Deadshot being Cyte-09 (who is black), Author is who everyone listens to because they like him ( He is white), and my favorite being his sister Eleanor (who was based on my main in Warframe), being she can't speak normally but only telepathically communicate and control/read minds (in other words, very cool a word special)

What they didn’t realize is that @the video game world” doesn’t thrive on trendiness. It thrives on development companies creating a game that grasps the interest of the consumer and keeps them engaged and wanting to play the game more and/or again. If a developer is great at RPG’s, that’s what they should stick to! Alternatively, if that studio is great at making open world games….stick to that.

I'd agree with all of this but unfortunately, things aren't as easy as "make the game that the audience wants" and then all will be fine. People are going to buy all kinds of crap for some reason (just look at Call of Duty or the NBA, F1 and whatever series) year after year. The billions these games make don't automatically make them good.
Also, somewhere along the line, both sides of this conflict lost the plot.
Studios, journalists, "anti DEI" content creators, and even those allegedly neutral ones are happy talking about how diversity is important (or not important) or how you should stop worrying about everything else and just make a good game. Both sides are incorrect because diversity won't sell a game, being good won't sell a game. Name recognition, good marketing is going to sell games.
However, the only people in this equation who truly want to sell games are the executives who have no clue HOW TO MAKE a game. They don't write articles, don't make youtube videos and nobody even knows their names. If even the developers say stupid things like "we hate money" then there's really no hope left.

Targeting specifically Indie for our services has had the studio I work for having their best year yet! I can't help but feel for the people laid off, its hard, it sucks and as you said its almost always down to the execs not the artists. Surprisingly a lot of the big studios still seem to be sticking it out and not changing strategies. That was reflected in what people were lining up for. A closed off demo showcase for AC: Shadows you were waiting maybe 15 minutes max. The game "The first Berserker:Khazan" people were waiting for 2+ hours including myself to get hands on with it. A lot of the popular stands and booths were coming from Chinese developers, Gatcha Wifu games. AAA booths still had traffic but the big names just didn't seem to pull the big crowds in anymore. The shift is happening quickly and honestly is a welcome change of direction as both an artist and someone who loves gaming as a whole.

One of the few essays I actually remember writing in school was a second year English course. My professor set the topic as the importance of activism. This was back in 2017, when the woke movement was starting to pick up steam, and I had already seen a few of my favorite IPs get ruined, and was sick of seeing people I knew that had never thought or cared about politics or history were suddenly acting like they’ve always cared about history and politics while ranting about Trump.
It was probably the best essay I’ve ever written, and my thesis was that activism does more harm for movements than good. I pointed out the long history of activism groups turning public opinion against their causes due to the extreme tactics used, their tendency to shut out anyone that doesn’t conform to the groupthink, and that most of the key figures in activist groups tend to use them as a grift for public positions or money.
My ultimate point was that activism, no matter how noble the cause, always ends in one of two ways: 1 - they immediately harm their cause with extreme tactics that push normal people to their opposition. 2 - they get what they want, but the people in charge don’t want to give up the fame and wealth they gained along the way, and you end up with activist groups that constantly need to keep moving the goalposts to justify their existence, which inevitably ends up pushing normal people towards their opposition. I then argued that the best way to achieve progressive ideals, is to do it naturally, and that activism will only work if the activists appear to be nothing more than peaceful folk just trying to live their lives, and dissolve their groups once they’ve achieved their goals.
Less than a decade later, every point I made has been proven dozens of times over.

To a certain extent I agree with you... but listen... I don't care much about whether you have a job or not but I DO care if YOU get fired because YOUR BOSS got told to do so by some influencer or consultant who has no friggin idea what you do on a daily basis or how you're supposed to do it. GFX artists being replaced by generative AI is NOT going to make your games any better for the foreseeable future. VA's being replaced by AI-VA-generators will NOT make your games any better for the foreseeable future. A board of directors who thinks you can do twice as much in half the time for half the money is NOT going to make your jjob any better in the foreseeable future...
      but it's happening

Honestly I see it as a good thing. While painful for some, it follows a good cycle of a reduction in stagnation. Gaming companies goals stopped being to make a good game and instead to make as much money as possible with the least amount of risk. These ideas result in the same game being repurposed with new assets and new story and minimal innovation or even attempts at making anything that was different from the last generation of games. I still can't wrap my head around the whole POE and then people then getting into POE 2. it's just more of the same thing. So many games are just more of the same thing. Lastly I'd like to bring up the point that people rate the success of a game based on how long they play it... I.e. how addictive the game is to their brains and not how fun it actaully is. A good example of a really fun game that was short was Braid. Cool innovative and original mechanics and even a compelling artistic story. The game might've only been about 6 hours. That 6 hours was more memorable and satisfying than 100 hours of gameplay grinding out that next gear set...
I know we do this to ourselves but the industry uses techniques that are known to cause habitual and addictive behavior.

Christ, this article is so frustrating. I think they genuinely touch on some good points in terms of economics & how it's overall effecting the industry in ways which aren't talked about nearly as much as they probably ought to be (at least by mainstream journalism avenues) - though I do think they miss some more overarching connecting points. That said, the second half of this is some of the most heinously disingenuous perpetuation of lies from media corpos in gaming from the past 2 decades. I 1000% echo your sentiments about how ENTIRELY sick I am of gamergate's re-writing is being done by these types of 'writers'. The thing that's most frustrating though is being caught between not wanting to give them any sort of engagement (as there's high likelihood of being engagement bait) & wanting to refute the litany of bold face lies being spread by this degenerative slop.

13:05 New Blood Interactive is an indie publisher. Their games include DUSK, Ultrakill, Faith, and more. The "We love you. We miss you. We hate money." is a play on one of their common marketing phrases, where they put their games at really low prices and say "We love you. We hate money."
Don't lump New Blood in with the corporate pigs at Ubisoft or Sony. The billboard was both an acknowledgement and critique of the industry's financial decisions. They really do hate money.

Befor watching the video, the awnser to that first question seems like a multiple step process rather than one simple one.
Studio's became greedy (most likely publishers) and began extracting as much profit as possible out of every aspect of production/launch and life time of the game. They laid off massive amounts of staff in various areas of creation leading to understaffed, overworked people working tired on a project they no longer care about due to work related stress, alot of people getting laid off were quality control/bug testing, so games released in a poor state and are negatively rated out the door. Other layed off staff were the most experienced and higher paid game designers that actual drove games to become pleasurable/immersive/fascinating products, and those that are left are trying to save their jobs or have some skin in the game so they implement as many ways to squeeze money out of consumers over actual gameplay.

Its very simple if studios make unfinished, poor quality, buggy, use old systems, woke, shallow, repetitive, with little content games along with greed of companies with micro transactions and lootboxes Gamers will NOT buy those games!
Gamers will buy good games like BG3 with high quality, indeepth interesting stories with choises with consequences, a world that is alive and vibrant, and have a superb communication with its player base, full price content for a fair price because common people have worse economy now due to corporate greed.
Thank you Larian Studios and Sven for telling the truth to the GREED corporate companies what truly matters in doing excellent games and show it is possible! ❤❤❤

2024 was kinda a mess for me. Most of the games i was excited for like Helldivers 2 and space marine 2 was done extremely well but Enshrouded, Forever Winter and some Ultra modlist for Skyrim got me enjoying my first year of gaming on my first pc that i built myself but also struggling to cope with my 51yo father passing away in march.
Getting by in life despite the hardship of grief but as long i focus on the things that keeps me happy like my hobbies such as games and model kits or my family who still around but im looking forward to tons of games but im afraid im gonna have a hard time getting to some of em with Monster Hunter Wild is gonna hold me Hostage besides Mecha Break filling my satisfaction for a PvP shooter.
But as someone who hates to see layoffs im not happy with Bungie current management and the way they operate as Destiny is suffering from it but oh well Warframe 1999 has my attention till monster hunter wilds releases but its funny how DEI is becoming a problem but if your looking to use DEI to cut costs what else are you cutting because Quality from AAA games is awful for the past few years
