Proto-ichthyosauromorphs took one collective look at Lystrosaurus, understood that they could not possibly compete with the pinnacle of terrestrial life, and did everything in their power to get as far away from its niche as possible as quickly as possible, rate of evolution be damned.
9:45 Since he died your our fins. You should make a new pin. Not doing so could be considered a sin. (But I would seriously love a design after this guy.)
Ichthyosaurs are my favorite marine reptiles - like pterosaurs they’re just the perfect combination of stunningly beautiful and horribly wretched. In game Ichthyosaurus might be my most used lagoon species, mostly because I’ll just use them to fill out a lagoon. Like one or two “big star” attractions and then just a massive school of Ichthyosaurs.
granted it's a little plain, but I do think Ichthyosaurus deserves some props for being one of the few non-DLC marine beasts to escape being run through the nefarious Crocodylification Machine. also regarding Scott's point about vertical slit pupils, I think I recall seeing a video recently that went in depth on the theory that slit pupils are a response to hunting very close to a horizontal plane, it had something to do with judging distance I believe. it certainly makes sense given many of the animals that have slit pupils; small cats, snakes, crocodiles, skimmer birds, and it would go some way to explaining why other animals that hunt in low light don't have that feature, like owls and big cats. I recall far too few of the details, but my point is the idea *does* seem to have some weight to it.
Ichthyosaurs are quickly becoming my favourite marine reptiles. I think my absolute favourites are the titans like Ichthyotitan, Shonisaurus and Himalayasaurus (the latter two are suspected to be much more macropredatory than originally thought, which is nothing short of metal) and Eurhinosaurus for its swordfish-like face and potential deep-sea adaptations.
I think I agree, there's something so interesting about the mega ichthyosaurs emerging during the Triassic when they would've dwarfed all fauna on land that we know of.
It’s a shame there’s only two Ichthyosaurs in this game, cause there’s so many more I want to see like; Ophthalmosaurus Cymbospondylus Temnodontosaurus Eurhinosaurus
@@SmashBrosAssemblerad but I think C. petrinus would fit in better with the current lack of animals in its side range. It’s also a classic being one of the first known early ichthyosaurs
I can't believe they changed it's social animation, it used to be some spins they did grabbed by their fins to their bellys. Now they just bump each other
That was without a doubt one of the intros of all time 🤣 10:04 bill wurtz is that you? 19:26 Love how nonechalantly James just said that pfff😆 + Algorithm boost 🤜
Ichthyosaurus, Dimorphodon and Plesiosaurus are undoubtedly some of the most paleontologically significant species ever found by Mary Anning and I'm glad that this trio is in the game. The quality of these creatures' in-game reconstructions, however, is probably up for debate...
I kinda get what they were saying about the design just looking like a regular ichthyosaur being a good thing, even though it's not that interesting to look at. I feel it's a decent depiction that doesn't try to oversell what the animal is. I sort of wish more designs did this. Big up the bland and the beige XD
The Wheel has finally chosen another ornithopod! For those keeping track, the last one was discussed back in May. It’s been an ornithopod-less summer, but finally getting back with a good one to discuss. The Wheel is definitely saving the best one for last (imo).
I'm actually shocked by how harsh some of the rankings here. I love the game's Icthyosaurus. It has stellar animations (even with the lack of breaching), the colors are decent and being simple doesn't automatically make it boring.
Very good section on heart anatomy, really learned something! I wanted to add a little comments on the bends: in the study of PardoPerez very little evidence for the bends was found in Holzmaden and MSG ichthyosaurs, especially compared to the signal in mosasaurs this might mean ichthyosaurs were much better adapted physiologically to diving
This adds little of value, but the heart defect mentioned is so similar to what was found on my mother - it might be the same thing, but all the details I got was "congential heart defect, a hole that was letting blood slosh around back and forth" - it might have been exactly what you're describing. They didn't find it until she was in her...40s, I think? She grew up on a farm and was the youngest and always knew she wasn't as robust as her siblings, but she never knew why and had 4 kids without it being detected. I wonder how she'd feel about being more/less susceptible to the bends. Anyway, it's neat.
Ichthyosaurs have an interesting relationship to the franchise because there's been quite a few times where they were considered to be included in the Jurassic Franchise but end up being cut. As a result, the only time we see Icthyosaurs is in early side games, a diagram in the Telltale game, and the mobile games. That is until Evolution 2 which included Ichthyosaurus and later then Shonisaurus. Hopefully we do see more of this very interesting family in the franchise not just the super predators like Shinosaurus but the small little bois to like Mixosaurus
No mention on the Ichthyosaurus remains found in Svalbard dated to the end of the Permian? The fact that it pushes their origin and evolution even earlier than what we thought? Was hoping for a reference and discussion to that :( Edit: 30:00 Man, they even hint at it, now I'm really sad...
I put some in my most recent Sandbox park and they keep starving to death despite having 8 fish feeders. Then again, it's not that big a Lagoon and there's a Meg in there...
I've heard convergent evolution explained a few times, but I gotta say: This was one of the worst. But exactly what I expected from the skeleton crew. I love this channel.
I can't believe you forgot to talk about its history of research and discovery. If this is not amended when we get to _Plesiosaurus,_ then the Ichthyosaurs dieing for our fins might not be enough to prevent Mary Anning's ghost from coming to haunt us.
You may assume that the crew have called Alex their "taxonomy bitch", but given the lack of censorship I think that we can safely assume that they actually called him their "taxonomy fish"

@@ProfessorRugops This is a good point, actually, people always compare Ichthies to dolphins, but behaviour wise they would be more like a cross between croc and shark, which given how big some of them get, would be quite worrying.
14:23 Well... maybe if you consider spiders to be flyers instead of gliders, that wouldn't be true... (this is a joke, ballooning spiders have very limited flight control after lifting off and may be considered planktonic)
I'm always disappointed when the wheel lands on a hadrosaur and 4 of you turn into schleprock. I wish at least a few of you would be excited about the group. Perhaps you could bring on an expert when it lands on parasaurolophus so someone could be enthusiastic.

True to form, they're tunaform.

Not directly. It is hypothesized based on the fact we have fully pelagic ichthyosauriforms just 2,5-3 million years after the P-T boundary.
